How to choose a sanding belt
Start with the machine size, then the work material, then the finish you need. Each product page shows its own material, grit and pack options.
1. Match the belt size
The first number is belt width; the second is the full length around the loop. A 3 × 21 belt and a 3 × 18 belt fit different machines. Check your manual or the size printed inside the old belt.

2. Choose the abrasive for the work
Aluminum oxide for wood and general sanding
Start with aluminum oxide when sanding wood. Cloth A/O is also offered for general sanding and finer metal finishing on selected products. Check the product page for the available grits.
Zirconia or ceramic for metal removal
Compare zirconia and ceramic options for steel and metalworking. Grain choice depends on your machine, work material and sanding pressure. These options are not stocked in every size or grit.
Glass or surface finishing
Choose a glass-fabrication silicon carbide belt for the specified application. Non-woven surface-conditioning belts are a separate choice for blending and surface finishing; they do not use the same grit scale as coated belts.

3. Choose a starting grit
A lower grit number leaves a coarser scratch; a higher number refines it. Start only as coarse as the job requires, then work through finer grits. Test on scrap and follow the finish manufacturer’s sanding instructions.
- Coarse: 24–60 grit
- Compare for substantial removal or rough shaping where a coarse scratch is acceptable.
- Medium: 80–120 grit
- Compare for general sanding and refining the scratch left by a coarser belt.
- Fine: 150 grit and higher
- Compare for finer surface preparation. The right stopping grit depends on the work material and the next finish.
Sanding belt questions
How do I find the right sanding belt size?
Match the width and full loop length stated by your machine manufacturer. Use the machine size chart as a starting point, then confirm the size in the manual or on the existing belt.
Which sanding belt should I choose for wood?
Start by comparing aluminum oxide belts in the exact size required by your sander. Choose a grit for the amount of material to remove and the finish that follows. Check the product page because grit availability varies by size and material.
Where can I buy ceramic sanding belts?
Selected Maverick belt sizes offer Ceramic in the material selector. Open your exact size, choose Ceramic, and check the available grits. For an unlisted size or specification, request a custom quote.
What if my sanding belt size is not listed?
Use the custom sanding belt request page with your width, full loop length, work material and preferred grit. Contact Maverick to confirm the specification, quantity and current lead time before ordering.
Can I use any sanding belt wet?
No. Wet use depends on the exact belt specification and the machine. Check both manufacturers’ instructions; do not assume that every cloth-backed belt or electric sander is suitable for wet sanding.
