Four-and-a-half feet of 4" wide belt is a bench-machine size: belt-disc combination sanders, stand-mounted belt sanders and short-bed edge sanders built around a 4" x 54" loop, the machines a small woodshop, a school shop or a maintenance department uses for squaring stock, shaping parts, chamfering and general deburring. We convert 4" x 54" belts in Anaheim, California with heat-treated aluminum oxide on closed-coat poly-cotton cloth, the grain that gives the cleanest cut and longest life on wood and handles light metal and plastic work without complaint.
Six belts per pack in 40 through 320 grit, so one order covers a shaping grit, a general grit and a finishing grit with spares. The belts can be run wet or dry.

Which 4" x 54" belt grit should you choose?
This size is stocked in one grain, aluminum oxide, which is the right call for the machines that take it: bench sanders do not have the horsepower or rigidity to make zirconia or ceramic fracture and self-sharpen, and aluminum oxide cuts steadily at the light pressure they allow. Choose by grit.
- 40 grit: rough shaping, taking a blank down to a line, removing saw marks on thick stock, knocking off heavy burrs on steel and aluminum.
- 60 grit: squaring ends and edges, chamfering, removing the 40 scratch.
- 80 and 100 grit: the general-purpose belts. First pass on most wood parts, fitting joints, general deburring on metal.
- 120 grit: removing the coarse scratch, final on paint-grade parts, last belt before hand sanding on many projects.
- 150 and 180 grit: pre-finish on hardwood, satin finish on aluminum.
- 220 grit: final pass before stain or clear on wood; smooth deburr on metal.
- 320 grit: fine finishing, tool and chisel touch-up, pre-polish on aluminum, brass and plastics.

Never skip more than one grit. Belt changes on a bench machine take a minute, and the time saved by jumping from 60 to 220 is lost when the coarse scratch shows through the finish.
What machines take a 4" x 54" belt?
- Belt-disc combination sanders that pair a 4" x 54" belt with a disc. Sand long edges and curves on the belt and end grain on the disc.
- Bench and stand-mounted belt sanders with a 4" wide platen, tilting between vertical and horizontal.
- Short-bed edge sanders built around a 54" loop for small cabinet and furniture parts.
Confirm the size on the machine's plate or manual, or measure the circumference of a belt that fits; 4" x 54" is not interchangeable with the other 4" bench sizes. We also stock 4" x 36" and 4" x 60", and any other size can be converted to order.
Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow and mount it so it runs that way. Release the tension lever, slide the belt over both drums, re-tension, spin by hand and adjust tracking so the belt rides centred on the platen, then power up and fine-tune.
How to get the most out of it
- Platen for flat and square, drum for curves. Hold edges against the platen with the fence or mitre gauge to keep them square; use the exposed drum or slack section for inside curves and rounding.
- Move the work across the belt. A 4" belt wears a track fast if every part rides the same line. Shift the part across the width so the grain wears evenly and the belt lasts.
- Light pressure, steady feed. Aluminum oxide cuts with the weight of the part. Leaning in heats the grain, glazes it and burns maple and cherry first.
- Keep metal cool. Small steel parts heat in seconds. Dip in water between passes and never let an edge change colour.
- Grease the belt for aluminum. A belt grease stick touched to the running belt stops aluminum and brass packing between the grains.
- Clean before you change. Wood resin and dust load an aluminum oxide belt long before it wears. A crepe-rubber belt eraser pressed lightly on the running belt restores the cut.
- Separate wood and metal belts. A belt that has done aluminum or steel leaves grey marks on stain-grade wood. Mark the spares.
- Store belts hanging over a peg, out of sun and humidity, and let cold belts warm to shop temperature before mounting.

Which grits should I buy for general woodworking?
Keep 80 grit on the machine for shaping and the first pass, 120 to remove that scratch and for paint-grade parts, and 220 for the final pass before stain or clear. Add 40 if you shape rough blanks often and 320 for tool touch-up. The six-pack lets you stock one grit deep or split it across a set.
Can a 4" x 54" aluminum oxide belt sand metal?
Yes, for deburring, rounding corners and light shaping on aluminum, brass and mild steel. Use a belt grease stick on aluminum to stop loading, dip steel parts in water so they never change colour, and keep a separate belt for metal so grey marks do not end up on stain-grade wood. Heavy steel removal needs zirconia on a stronger machine.
Can these belts be run wet?
The poly-cotton cloth backing tolerates water, so the belt can be run wet on a machine built for it. Most bench belt sanders have open motors and switches and must be run dry; cool small metal parts by dipping them between passes instead of wetting the belt.
How do I stop the belt from wearing a groove down the middle?
Move the work across the full width of the belt instead of always sanding on the same track, and use the platen for flat work and the drum for curves so wear is spread. Clean the belt with a crepe-rubber belt eraser when it loads. A belt worn in one band will also track poorly, so change it once a groove is visible.
