End-grain cutting boards, glued-up drawer fronts and small tabletop sections are what a 19-inch wide belt sander spends most of its life flattening, and a 60-inch belt gives that machine noticeably more cooling time per revolution than the shorter 48-inch loop. We convert this size on anti-static X-weight poly-cotton cloth in closed-coat aluminum oxide for wood and MDF and in zirconia for hardwood calibrating and steel.
Grits run from 36 through 400 and each pack holds three belts of one grain and grit. The X-weight cloth was chosen because it stays flat and tracks on older, temperamental machines that chew up lighter backings. We convert every belt in Anaheim, California and cut other lengths to order.

Which 19" x 60" belt should you buy: aluminum oxide or zirconia?
Buy by what the belt is asked to remove and how hard the machine can press it.
- Cloth Closed Coat A/O: aluminum oxide on X-weight cloth. This is the belt for solid wood, plywood, MDF, veneer and anything finer than 120 grit, and for aluminum, brass and composites. It cuts cleanly at the moderate pressure a 19-inch machine delivers and gives an even scratch that takes stain uniformly. Closed coat means the cloth is fully covered in grain, so it outlasts open coat on hardwood and MDF.
- Zirconia: a grain that fractures under load to expose fresh cutting edges. Buy it for flattening end-grain cutting boards and glued-up hardwood at 36 to 60 grit, where the belt is working through glue lines and end grain that dull aluminum oxide quickly, and for mild steel plate or weld knockdown at 36 to 120 grit. It needs pressure; run it light and it just dulls. Above 120 grit pick aluminum oxide.
Grit by job, either grain: 36 and 40 for flattening rough or uneven glue-ups; 60 for dimensioning and glue-line removal; 80 and 100 for surfacing planed stock; 120 and 150 for pre-finish and paint-grade MDF; 180 and 220 for the last pass before stain or clear; 320 and 400 for a skim pass on oiled cutting boards, veneer and clear-coated work.

What machines take a 19" x 60" belt?
- Compact 19-inch wide belt sanders whose manual specifies a 60-inch belt, the class of machine used in small cabinet shops, cutting-board makers and school shops. The old page called these "timesaver machines"; the trade uses that name for wide belt sanders generally.
- Older 19-inch machines with tired tension or tracking systems. The X-weight cloth is stiff enough to stay flat and track where lighter belts wander and fray.
- 19-inch machines that specify a 48-inch belt take our 19" x 48" belts instead. Length tolerance is about plus or minus 1/4 inch, so a 60-inch belt will not go on a 48-inch machine.
To measure an unmarked belt, lay it flat, mark one point on the outside, and roll it once along a tape; the distance is the belt length. Mount with the grain out, tension, and set tracking with the oscillation running so the belt swings evenly either side of centre. Check inside the belt for a direction arrow and run it that way if there is one. For any other size, we convert custom belts in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Flatten end grain at 36 to 60 with light passes. End-grain boards resist the belt more than face grain; 1/64 inch per pass keeps the motor out of overload and the belt out of the burn zone. Zirconia holds up best here.
- Feed at an angle when you can. Running a board slightly skewed to the belt spreads wear across the width and reduces tear-out on figured stock.
- Keep feed speed up. Slow feed is what burns maple, cherry and walnut. Speed the feed up before you drop the table.
- Never skip more than one grit. 36, 60, 80, 120, 180, 220. Coarse scratches hide under a finer scratch until the oil or stain goes on.
- Let the anti-static backing and the dust collector work together. The backing keeps dust from clinging; the collector has to remove it. Loading is the number one killer of wide belts.
- Clean loaded belts on the machine. Press a crepe-rubber belt eraser lightly against the running belt to lift resin and packed dust out of the grain, especially after oily species.
- Give zirconia pressure and aluminum oxide a light touch. Zirconia stays sharp only when it is pressed hard enough to fracture; aluminum oxide cuts cleanest with shallow passes.
- Store spares hanging, off the floor and out of sunlight, and let a cold belt warm to shop temperature before running it.

Frequently asked questions
Which grit and grain should I use to flatten an end-grain cutting board?
Start with 36 or 40 grit zirconia if the board is more than about 1/16 inch out of flat or has heavy glue squeeze-out, or 60 grit if it is close. Take passes of 1/64 inch or less; end grain loads the motor quickly. Then step to 80, 120 and 180 aluminum oxide, and finish with 220 or a skim at 320 before oiling.
Does the 60-inch length matter compared with a 48-inch belt?
It does. A 19" x 60" belt has 25 percent more abrasive than a 19" x 48" and each point on it passes the drum less often, so it runs cooler and lasts longer on the same work. The length is set by your machine, though; a 60-inch belt cannot be run on a machine built for 48 inches.
Should I choose open coat or closed coat for wood?
Closed coat, which is what these belts are, unless you sand almost nothing but soft resinous pine. Closed coat carries more grain per square inch, so it cuts faster and lasts longer on hardwood, MDF and plywood, and it is the right choice for all metal work. Loading on closed coat is controlled with dust extraction and a belt eraser.
Why does zirconia burn my wood when aluminum oxide does not?
Zirconia needs enough pressure to fracture its grain and expose fresh edges. On a light pass, or on softwood that does not push back, the grain never fractures; it rounds over, glazes and rubs heat into the surface. Use zirconia only for the heavy calibrating pass on hardwood and switch to aluminum oxide for everything finer.
How do I measure my old belt to be sure 19" x 60" is right?
Measure the width across the belt with a tape. For the length, lay the belt flat, mark one spot on the outside, and roll it one full turn along a tape; the distance travelled is the belt length. Most machines accept about a quarter inch either way. If your measurement is not 60 inches, tell us and we will cut the correct length.
What is in the pack, and can you supply case quantities?
