Thirty feet of belt is the longest 6" stroke sander size we stock, made for the big-table machines that sand countertops, conference tables, tall doors and full sheets of metal or plastic without repositioning the work. Like our other stroke sanding belts it is a cloth belt for wood, metal or plastic, offered in Aluminum Oxide for solid wood and veneer, Zirconia for steel, stainless and aluminum, and Silicon Carbide for laminates, solid surface, plastics and non-ferrous metal.
All three are on poly-cotton cloth that can be run wet or dry. We convert them in Anaheim, California, two to a pack, 36 through 400 grit, with zirconia held in the coarse grits and the fine grits in aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.

Which 6" x 360" belt should you choose?
A thirty-foot belt is a serious piece of cloth. Choose the grain for the material you run most, and keep the belt clean so it lasts.
- Aluminum Oxide: solid wood, veneer, plywood and MDF. It cuts cleanly at the light pad pressure a stroke sander uses, gives the most even scratch before stain or lacquer and lasts longest on wood, which is why we recommend it to woodworkers almost every time. It also handles aluminum, steel and composites when cost matters more than speed. Poly-cotton cloth, wet or dry, in every grit from 36 to 400.
- Zirconia: heavy stock removal and long life on steel, stainless and aluminum sheet and plate. It self-sharpens under moderate-to-heavy pressure; at that pressure it tears and burns wood, so keep it for metal. Held in the coarse grits, 36 through 120; other coarse zirconia grits can be converted to order.
- Silicon Carbide: the sharpest grain, for laminates, solid surface, acrylic, fiberglass, stone and non-ferrous metals, and for sanding between coats of finish where you want the cleanest scratch. It wears fast on steel.
A countertop shop working solid surface keeps silicon carbide 120, 220 and 320. A furniture shop keeps aluminum oxide 80, 120 and 180. A metal shop keeps zirconia 60 and 120 with aluminum oxide 220.

What machines take a 6" x 360" belt?
We have not verified individual models against the 6" x 360" size. Stroke sander belt length is set by drum spacing and varies by maker and table length, so confirm the length in your manual or measure the old belt before ordering.
- Extended-table horizontal stroke sanders with a 6" belt, used for countertops, conference tables, tall doors and large panels.
- Metal stroke sanders and long finishing machines that specify a 6" x 360" belt for sheet and plate.
- Long edge sanders built around a 6" x 360" loop.
Mounting: back off the tension, carry the belt to the machine coiled, slide it over both drums grain side out, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way, re-tension, then turn the belt by hand and set tracking centered. A thirty-foot belt takes a moment to settle; re-check tracking after the first minute under load. Other 6" lengths are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the pad flat and moving in long overlapping strokes. On a top this size it is tempting to work one area; that is how dishes and lines end up under the finish.
- Plan the sequence for the finish. For stain: 80, 120, then 150 or 180 and stop. For clear coat: add 220. For solid surface matte: 120, 220, 320 in silicon carbide.
- Use light pressure on wood and veneer. A belt this long cools between passes; let the grain cut. Start veneer at 120.
- Lean on zirconia on metal so the grain fractures, and keep the pad moving so stainless does not blue.
- Run silicon carbide wet where the machine allows on solid surface, plastics and aluminum; the cloth backing tolerates it. Woodworking stroke sanders are dry machines.
- Protect the investment. Keep dust extraction strong and clean a loading belt with a crepe rubber belt eraser at low pressure before it glazes.
- Separate wood and metal dust if the machine sees both; sparks in a wood dust collector are a fire risk.
- Store belts hanging in their coil, never folded, away from humidity, and let a cold belt warm to room temperature before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
Why do stroke sanders take so many different 6" belt lengths?
Belt length is set by the distance between the two drums, which follows the table length the maker chose, so a 6" x 360" belt fits only machines built for it. We stock 6" stroke sander belts in many lengths and make any other 6" length to order in about 3 days, so measure the old belt or check the manual and order that.
Which 6" x 360" belt is right for solid surface countertops?
Silicon carbide. It is the sharpest of the three grains, cuts solid surface and laminates cleanly without loading as fast as aluminum oxide, and leaves the even scratch a matte or semi-gloss finish needs. Run 120 to level seams, 220 to refine, and 320 or 400 for the final matte, with a light pad and overlapping strokes.
What grit sequence should I use on a conference table before stain?
With aluminum oxide, flatten at 80, remove that scratch at 120, then finish at 150 or 180 and stop. Going finer than 220 on a stroke sander burnishes the wood and makes stain blotchy. Work with the grain in long overlapping strokes and keep the pad moving across the whole top.
Can I use one belt for wood and metal?
Not the same belt. Zirconia is the right grain for steel and aluminum but tears and burns wood; aluminum oxide is right for wood and only adequate on metal. Steel swarf embedded in a belt also marks the next wooden panel, so keep separate belts and, if the machine sees both materials, separate dust collection.
Is silicon carbide any good on steel?
No. Silicon carbide is very sharp but friable, and on ferrous metal it wears out quickly. Use zirconia in the coarse grits for steel and stainless and aluminum oxide from 150 up for graining. Save the silicon carbide 6" x 360" belt for solid surface, laminates, plastics, aluminum and brass.
How should a thirty-foot belt be handled and stored?
Carry it coiled, never dragged or folded, and hang it or store it loosely coiled in its box away from humidity and sunlight. A crease in the cloth becomes a bump that will not track. Let a belt that has been in a cold shop warm to room temperature before you mount it.
What are the terms on a 6" x 360" pack?
