The first time a maker runs a non-woven belt on a 2 x 72 grinder is usually the moment hand-sanding stops being the only way to get a clean satin on a blade. This kit puts all four grades on the bench at once: one 2" x 72" Coarse, one Medium, one Very Fine and one Ultra Fine (Ultrafine) surface conditioning belt, so you can find the grade your work needs without buying four separate listings.
Each belt is aluminum oxide grain locked in a nylon web, cool-running and low-loading, that blends grind lines, deburrs, cleans scale and heat tint and leaves a directional satin on steel, stainless, aluminum, titanium and handle hardware. They fit any grinder that tracks a standard 2" x 72" belt.

What is in the kit?
The kit contains exactly four belts, one of each grade, all 2" wide by 72" long:
- One (1) 2" x 72" Coarse surface conditioning belt, brown
- One (1) 2" x 72" Medium surface conditioning belt, maroon
- One (1) 2" x 72" Very Fine surface conditioning belt, blue
- One (1) 2" x 72" Ultra Fine (Ultrafine) surface conditioning belt, grey
Nothing else is included. Individual belts of each grade are sold separately on our 2" x 72" surface conditioning belt listing once you know which grade you use most.
Which belt in the kit should you reach for?
Non-woven belts are graded by the scratch they leave rather than by a grit number on the belt. Working from coarse to fine:
- Coarse, brown (roughly a 40–60 grit scratch): blending heavy grind lines after a 60 grit ceramic belt, knocking scale and rust off bar stock, cleaning forge scale from a blade before grinding. It removes more than the other three, so keep a light hand near a thin edge.
- Medium, maroon (roughly 80–120): the everyday belt. It evens out the flats after a 120 grit ceramic or zirconia belt, deburrs tangs and guards and leaves a uniform matte that hides minor grind marks on a working knife.
- Very Fine, blue (roughly 180–240): the satin belt. After a 220 grit aluminum oxide belt it gives a straight, #4-style brushed finish on stainless blades, bolsters and sheet, and it is the usual final pass on a working knife.
- Ultra Fine, grey (roughly 320–400): a fine satin and the last step before cork or buffing on a show blade, guard or handle hardware. It refines the Very Fine finish rather than removing scratches on its own.
Most makers who buy the kit end up reordering Medium and Very Fine and keeping Coarse and Ultra Fine for occasional jobs.

The sequence for a satin-finished blade is a ceramic or zirconia belt to set the bevels, an aluminum oxide belt at 220 to refine, then Very Fine or Ultra Fine from this kit. Skipping the 220 step leaves coated scratches showing through the satin.

The belts have no direction arrow and run either way. The web is thicker than a cloth belt, so if your tensioner is set for a thin coated belt back the tension off slightly until the belt tracks flat; the scrim backing does not stretch once set. Run them on the flat platen for flats and bevels, on the slack belt for handle curves and guards, and on a small wheel for finger grooves. On a variable-speed grinder slow the belt down; on a single-speed machine use lighter pressure and shorter passes.
How to get the most out of them
- Finish the coated sequence first. Take bevels to 120 with ceramic or zirconia and refine to 220 with aluminum oxide before the non-woven belt. Our 2" x 72" coated belts cover that sequence.
- Light pressure, slow belt. The web does the work. Heavy pressure tears fibres out, shortens belt life and heats a thin edge; slow the grinder and let the belt run cool.
- Stroke in one direction. Pull the blade across the belt in a single consistent direction, spine to edge or along the length, so the satin grain reads straight. Never let a thin edge lead into the belt.
- Dip often. A non-woven belt runs cooler than a coated belt, but a thin tip still heats. Dip in water between passes and never let the edge change colour.
- Use the slack belt for curves. Guards, bolsters and rounded spines finish better on the slack section, where the web conforms, than on the platen.
- Move across the belt width. A blade always run in the centre wears a groove in a 2-inch belt. Shift across the width so the web wears evenly.
- No belt eraser, and hang them to store. Crepe rubber pulls web fibres. Hang the four belts on a rack rather than folding them; a crease prints a line on the next blade.

Which belt in the kit gives a satin finish on a stainless blade?
Very Fine (blue) after a 220 grit aluminum oxide belt gives the straight, #4-style satin most makers want on a stainless blade. Follow it with Ultra Fine (grey) for a finer, lower-contrast satin or as the last step before cork or buffing. Medium (maroon) gives a bolder matte for working knives.
How much steel does a non-woven belt take off a bevel?
Very little at the light pressure these belts are meant to run at. They refine the surface and soften edges rather than cutting, so bevel geometry and edge thickness set on the coated belts stay where you put them. The Coarse belt is the exception under heavy pressure, which is why we recommend a light hand on thin blades.
What speed should I run surface conditioning belts on a 2 x 72?
Slower than a coated belt. On a variable-speed grinder turn the speed down and use light pressure; the web cuts cooler and lasts longer at reduced speed. On a single-speed grinder, compensate with lighter pressure and shorter passes, and dip the blade often. We do not quote a fixed speed because grinders and motors vary.
Can I return the kit if I do not use it?
