An inch of belt width matters more on a wide belt machine than anywhere else in the shop: a belt that is narrower than the drum leaves a strip of every full-width sheet unfinished. These 44" x 75" surface conditioning belts are made for the industrial 43-inch-class machines whose manuals specify a 44-inch belt, giving full coverage on wide stainless, aluminum and steel sheet while the non-woven web blends the coated scratch, deburrs cut edges and lays a straight, even satin grain.
The web is aluminum oxide grain in a nylon fibre matrix on a reinforced scrim backing for industrial tension and oscillation. Four grades are stocked, Coarse, Medium, Very Fine and Ultra Fine, each sold as a single belt.

Which grade should you run on heavy plate versus thin sheet?
The grades share one web and backing. Choose by the material thickness and the finish it leaves with, and remember that thick plate tolerates a little more head pressure than thin sheet, which heats and distorts quickly.
- Coarse (40-60 Grit), brown: heavy deburring and cleaning. On plate it knocks down dross from laser and plasma cutting, strips mill haze and light rust and takes heavy heat tint off stainless. On thin sheet it lays a bold brushed grain on aluminum. It removes measurable material at pressure, so use the lightest head setting that does the job.
- Medium (80-120 Grit), maroon: production deburring and pre-coat satin. Behind a 120 grit coated belt it rolls the burr on stainless, mild steel and aluminum blanks and leaves an even matte for paint, powder coat or galvanizing prep.
- Very Fine (180-240 Grit), blue: the #4-style graining grade for stainless sheet. Behind a 180–220 grit coated belt it produces the long, uniform directional finish specified for food-service equipment, architectural panels and appliance work.
- Ultra Fine (320-400 Grit), grey: fine satin and pre-buff. Run after Very Fine on aluminum trim, appliance fronts and parts going to buffing or anodizing. It refines; it does not remove scratches.
For heavy plate work keep Coarse and Medium on hand; for sheet cosmetic work keep Very Fine, with Ultra Fine for the finest specifications.

The non-woven head refines one step of scratch. On plate that came off a 60 grit coated belt, run 120 coated before Medium; on sheet destined for a #4-style finish, run 180 or 220 coated before Very Fine.
Which machines take a 44" x 75" surface conditioning belt?
- Industrial 43-inch-class wide belt deburring and finishing machines (Timesaver 43 class and similar) whose manual specifies a 44" x 75" belt. The original listing for this belt described it as suited to Timesaver and other automated sanders.

Machines in this class are specified for either a 43-inch or a 44-inch belt; we stock a 43" x 75" version as well. Order the width in the manual: a belt wider than specified can foul the guarding or the tracking sensor, and one narrower leaves an unfinished strip. Length tolerance is about a quarter inch. The belt has no direction arrow; mount it either way, tension to the maker's figure, jog through an oscillation cycle to confirm tracking, and set the non-woven head lighter than the coated head. Swarf goes to a metal-rated or wet collector, never a wood-dust system.
How to get the most out of it
- Match the coated belt to the job. Our 44" x 75" aluminum oxide and zirconia belts handle aluminum and general steel; our 44" x 75" metalworking belts in zirconia, ceramic and grinding-aid grains handle stainless and heavy plate. Finish at 120 grit before Medium, 180–220 before Very Fine and Ultra Fine.
- Set head pressure by thickness. Plate can take a slightly firmer setting; thin sheet cannot. In both cases stop lowering the head as soon as the grain is continuous across the width.
- Deburr the dross side first. Run plate and blanks underside up to take the heavy burr, then show face up for the cosmetic pass.
- Keep the feed steady and in one direction. Slow the conveyor rather than adding pressure if the grain is faint, and never let a part stop under the head.
- Lubricate aluminum lightly. A mist or grease stick swipe stops aluminum smearing into the web. Stainless and steel run dry.
- Keep a stainless-only belt set. Carbon steel particles in the web transfer to stainless and later rust. Swap belts when the job changes metals.
- No belt eraser, and hang it to store. Crepe rubber pulls web fibres. A folded belt creases and prints a line on the next sheet.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 44-inch belt run on a machine specified for 43 inches?
We do not recommend it. A 44" x 75" belt on a 43-inch machine overhangs the drum and can rub the guarding, confuse the tracking sensor and fray at the edge. Order the width the manual specifies; we stock both 43" x 75" and 44" x 75" surface conditioning belts in the same four grades.
Can this belt deburr thick plasma-cut plate?
Yes, once a coated belt has taken the dross down. Run a 120 grit coated belt first, then the Coarse or Medium 44" x 75" non-woven belt with the dross side up to roll the burr, then flip the plate for the face pass. The non-woven belt rounds the edge and evens the surface; it is not intended to remove dross on its own.
Which grade removes heat tint from stainless after welding?
Coarse (40-60 Grit) removes heavy tint and Medium (80-120 Grit) removes light straw-colored tint on flat sheet run through the machine. Welded assemblies that will not lie flat need a surface conditioning disc or flap disc on a grinder instead; a wide belt finishes flat stock only.
What coated grit should precede Very Fine for a #4 finish?
Finish the coated head at 180 or 220 grit, then run the Very Fine (180-240 Grit) belt at light pressure with every sheet fed the same direction. The result is the long, uniform grain that food-service and architectural stainless is specified to, across the full 44-inch width in one pass.
How should I set head pressure for thin sheet compared with plate?
Lighter. Thin stainless and aluminum sheet heats quickly under a non-woven head and can oil-can or tint, so lower the head only until the grain line is continuous. Plate tolerates a slightly firmer setting, but even there extra pressure tears web fibres and shortens the life of a 44" x 75" belt without improving the finish.
