An oscillating edge sander is a fast, flat way to finish the edges of plate, sheet and extrusions, and the belt oscillation spreads heat and wear so metal grains last on it. These 6" x 89" metalworking belts fit the Jet OES-689 and Grizzly G0563 edge sanders in zirconia for steel plate and iron, ceramic for stainless and hardened steel, Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) for stainless, aluminum sign blanks and extrusions that heat and load, and Cloth A/O for the 150–600 grit edge finishing belts.
We convert them in Anaheim, California on a Y-weight poly-cotton backing with heat-treated grain, so a long belt runs true over the drums and takes pressure at the platen without stretching. Sold as a 2-pack so a shop can keep a grit pair on hand; the backing runs wet or dry.

Which grain should you run on an edge sander for metal?
Oscillation lowers the pressure on any one grain, so an edge sander favours the grains that stay sharp under moderate load. Choose by the metal you are edging.
- Zirconia: the default for steel plate, flat bar, cast iron and general fabrication edges. It micro-fractures under moderate-to-heavy pressure and keeps cutting as you feed the part into the platen. Offered 24–120 grit.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): zirconia with a grinding-aid top coat over the aid in the resin. Cooler and loading-resistant, it is the belt for stainless sheet, aluminum sign blanks, aluminum extrusions and titanium, where a plain belt packs and the edge blues or smears.
- Ceramic: the orange-red belt for stainless plate, hardened and tool steel and nickel alloys. It holds a constant cut rate for its life but needs firm, steady feed pressure; on an oscillating machine keep the part pressed hard into the platen or it glazes.
- Cloth A/O: heat-treated aluminum oxide, forgiving at light pressure, right for brass, bronze and soft aluminum, and the grain for every 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit belt in this listing. Use it for the finished edge after the coarse grains.
Above 120 grit, zirconia and ceramic leave a bright scratch, not a finished edge; move to Cloth A/O and then a non-woven belt if a satin edge is required.

Step no more than one grade at a time. Laser-cut steel parts go 80 zirconia then 120; aluminum sign blanks go 80 Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid), then 120 and 220 Cloth A/O with the grease stick applied at each grit.
What machines does a 6" x 89" belt fit?

Edge sander lengths vary by brand, so confirm the belt length in your manual before ordering; 6" x 79", 6" x 80" and 6" x 108" machines are also common and we stock several of those lengths. Mounting: release the tension, slide the belt over both drums with any printed arrow (check the inside) pointing in the direction of rotation, re-tension, then jog the machine while adjusting tracking until the belt rides centred and oscillates evenly across the platen without touching either edge guard. If no arrow is printed the joint runs either way. Lengths we do not list are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Isolate the dust system first. Edge sanders are usually plumbed into a wood-dust collector; steel sparks into that duct is a fire risk. Blank off the wood line and use a dedicated metal-rated or wet collector before grinding steel.
- Feed into the platen, not the drum. The platen section gives a square, flat edge; the drum ends are for inside curves only. Keep the part flat on the table and feed against belt rotation.
- Feed firmly with zirconia and ceramic. Oscillation already reduces pressure per grain, so lean the part in; a shiny, quiet belt on steel is glazed, not worn out.
- Keep the part moving along the belt and let oscillation do the rest. Parking a part in one spot blues stainless and grooves the belt.
- Lubricate aluminum. Rub a grease stick on the running belt, use the grinding-aid or Cloth A/O belts and lighter pressure, and clean the belt with a crepe belt eraser when it starts to load.
- Run wet where the machine allows. The poly-cotton backing tolerates coolant; a mist keeps stainless and titanium edges cool. Most edge sanders run dry, which is fine on steel.
- Store long belts hanging. A 6" x 89" belt left folded takes a set that thumps on the drums. Hang spares on a wide peg or roll them loosely, keep them dry and out of sunlight, and warm cold belts before use.

Most shops keep one coarse and one finishing grit on hand, so we pack these in pairs to keep the price of a grit set down. Which grit should I use to deburr laser-cut steel parts on an edge sander?
80 grit zirconia takes off dross and burrs quickly on mild steel and leaves an edge ready for welding or powder coat; follow with 120 if the edge will show. On stainless laser parts use 80 and 120 Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) to keep the edge from bluing. Feed the part along the belt against rotation and keep it flat on the table.
Can I run these belts wet, and can I return unused belts?
The poly-cotton backing tolerates coolant, so on an edge sander fitted with a mist system you can run them wet; most run dry, which is fine on steel.
