1" x 30" Metalworking Sanding Belts, 12 PACK
1" x 30" Metalworking Sanding Belts, 12 PACK
Available in stock (49998)
The small 1" x 30" bench sander is the most common sharpening and small-parts machine in home shops, and the belt on it decides whether it grinds steel or just heats it. These 1" x 30" metalworking belts are stocked in the three grains that matter on that machine: zirconia for carbon steel, mower blades and general fabrication, ceramic for stainless, hardened and tool steel when you can lean on the platen, and Cloth A/O for the 150–600 grit refining and finishing steps.
They are cut and joined in Anaheim, California on a heavy poly-cotton cloth backing with a bi-directional butt joint, so the belt tracks straight on a light bench sander without the thump of an overlapped joint. Twelve belts of one grit per pack: enough to keep a knife maker, a maintenance shop or a hobbyist in fresh belts for a season.
- Zirconia, ceramic and cloth aluminum oxide grains sized for 1" x 30" bench belt sanders
- Bi-directional butt joint runs smooth in either direction with no joint thump on the edge
- 24 through 600 grit: profile a blade, set a bevel and refine it on one machine
- Heavy poly-cotton cloth backing resists stretching and fraying on the small idler wheels
- 12 belts of one grit per pack; mix grits across packs to build a sharpening progression
- Converted in Anaheim, California; free shipping on orders over $200
Which grain should you run on a 1" x 30" sander?
A 1" x 30" bench sander is a light machine with a small platen, so grain choice matters more here than on a big grinder. This listing offers three grains; there is no grinding-aid zirconia in this size.
- Zirconia: the workhorse belt for a 1" x 30". It cuts carbon steel, mild steel, cast iron, mower blades, axes and garden tools fast and stays sharp as long as you push into the platen. Offered in the coarse and medium grits (24–120); use it for profiling, grinding out chips and setting bevels.
- Ceramic: the orange-red belt for stainless, hardened and tool steel. Ceramic fractures continuously and keeps a near-constant cut rate, but only under firm pressure. On a 1" x 30" it pays off when you grind a lot of hardened steel and are willing to press; used lightly, it glazes and heats the edge. If your work is mostly soft steel or occasional sharpening, zirconia is the better value.
- Cloth A/O: heat-treated aluminum oxide on poly-cotton cloth. Forgiving at light pressure, so it suits aluminum, brass and every finishing grit. All the 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit belts for refining an edge, removing the coarse scratch and prepping for a strop or buff are aluminum oxide.
Zirconia and ceramic are not finishing grains. Above 120 grit they leave a bright, shallow scratch that still looks coarse; move to Cloth A/O or a non-woven belt for anything you want to look finished.
Grit guide for sharpening and deburring on a 1" x 30"
| Grit | Stage | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| 24–36 | Heavy removal | Reprofiling a badly damaged edge, weld cleanup, thick burrs (zirconia or ceramic) |
| 40–60 | Roughing | Rapid stock removal, profiling a blade blank, grinding out chips |
| 80–120 | Refinement | Setting the bevel, removing deep scratches, sharpening mower blades and tools |
| 150–220 | Pre-finish | Refining the bevel, prepping metal for paint, polish or heat treat (Cloth A/O) |
| 320–400 | Finishing | Smooth satin bevel, deburring finished parts (Cloth A/O) |
| 600 | Pre-polish | Final edge refinement before stropping or buffing (Cloth A/O) |
On steel, step 60, 120, 220, 400 and never skip more than one grade. On aluminum start no coarser than 60, rub a grease stick on the running belt so it does not load, and finish at 120–220 before a surface-conditioning belt or buff.
Which 1" x 30" belt sanders does it fit?
A 1" x 30" is a standard bench sander size and these belts are precision-cut to it. Verified fits include:
- WEN 6515 and 6515T belt and disc sanders
- Rikon 50-151 and 50-1305 1" x 30" belt sanders
- Central Machinery / Harbor Freight 1" x 30" belt sanders, the most common machine we ship these belts for
- Bucktool and Grizzly 1" x 30" bench models and other bench sanders that list a 1" x 30" belt
Match both numbers in your manual. A 1" x 42" machine will not tension a 30" belt; we stock that size separately. Mounting: release the tension lever, slip the belt on, tension it, then rotate the belt by hand and adjust tracking so it rides centred on the platen before switching on. The butt joint is bi-directional, so either direction works; check the inside for an arrow anyway and follow it if one is printed. Odd sizes for older or imported machines can be made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Use the platen for bevels and the slack section for curves. Grind a knife bevel against the backed part of the belt for a flat, consistent angle; use the unsupported run between the wheels to follow a curved edge or a gouge.
- Press firmly with zirconia and ceramic, lightly with aluminum oxide. Zirconia and ceramic only stay sharp when they micro-fracture under load. If the belt goes shiny and stops cutting, that is glazing from too little pressure, not wear.
- Keep the edge cool. A thin edge heats in seconds on a fast belt. Take short passes, dip the blade in water between them, use a fresh belt for the final grit and stop the moment you see straw colour. A blued edge has lost its temper.
- Grind edge-trailing on the finishing grits. Spine first, edge pointing away from belt travel, so the belt cannot catch the apex and the burr forms cleanly for stropping.
- Slow down for aluminum and brass. Use a grease stick on the belt, light pressure and the Cloth A/O belts; they load far less than zirconia on soft metal.
- Clean and store. A crepe belt eraser clears loaded aluminum oxide belts. Keep spares hanging or loosely rolled away from humidity, and let a cold belt warm up before running it. Use a metal-rated collector or no collector at all; steel sparks in a wood-dust bag are a fire risk.
Use it for / don't use it for
Use it for
- Sharpening knives, chisels, plane irons, axes, mower blades and garden tools
- Profiling and bevel-setting small knife blanks in carbon and stainless steel
- Deburring small machined, punched and laser-cut steel and aluminum parts
- Cleaning up welds, rust and scale on small brackets and hardware
- Model making, jewelry and small tool work where a 1" belt reaches
Don't use it for
- Heavy hogging of thick plate; a 1" x 30" bench sander does not have the power, and coarse ceramic will glaze on it
- Finishing with zirconia or ceramic above 120 grit; switch to Cloth A/O
- Grinding an edge dry until it changes colour
- Machines that call for a 1" x 42" or other length; measure first

Frequently asked questions
Will these 1" x 30" belts fit the Harbor Freight 1x30 sander?
Yes. They are a standard 1" wide by 30" long and the Central Machinery / Harbor Freight 1" x 30" belt sander is the machine we ship them for most often. The same size fits the WEN 6515 and 6515T, the Rikon 50-151 and 50-1305, and other bench sanders that list a 1" x 30" belt.
What grit sequence should I use to sharpen a knife on a 1" x 30"?
For a dull but undamaged edge, start at 120 zirconia to set the bevel, move to 220 and 400 Cloth A/O, and finish at 600 before stropping. If the edge is chipped or needs reprofiling, start at 60 zirconia. Grind edge-trailing, keep passes short and dip the blade in water so the edge never changes colour.
Is ceramic worth it on a small 1" x 30" bench sander?
It depends on the steel and how hard you press. Ceramic needs firm, steady pressure to keep fracturing and cutting; on a light 1" x 30" it rewards you when grinding stainless, hardened or tool steel with real pressure, and glazes if you are gentle. For mild steel, mower blades and occasional sharpening, zirconia is the better value.
Why do the finer grits only come in Cloth A/O?
Zirconia and ceramic are stock-removal grains; they micro-fracture under pressure and above about 120 grit they stop giving a real advantage and leave a bright, shallow scratch. Heat-treated aluminum oxide cuts cleanly at light pressure, which is what a 150–600 grit finishing or sharpening pass needs, so the fine grits in this size are Cloth A/O.
Are these 1" x 30" belts waterproof?
The belts use a resin-over-resin bond on a poly-cotton cloth backing, so they tolerate humidity and light moisture and will not fall apart if a wet blade touches them. On a 1" x 30" bench sander you will normally run them dry; keep the blade cool by dipping it in water between passes rather than wetting the belt.
Which direction does the belt run and does the joint bump?
The joint is a bi-directional butt joint with tape on the inside, so the belt runs smoothly in either direction without the thump you feel from an overlapped joint. Check the inside of the belt for a printed arrow before mounting and follow it if there is one; otherwise mount it either way and set tracking before you start grinding.
How many belts come in a pack and can I mix grits?
Each pack is 12 belts of one grain and one grit. To build a sharpening progression, order a pack each of the grits you need, for example 60 and 120 zirconia plus 220 and 400 Cloth A/O.
