Sanding Belt Size Chart by Machine & Model

Updated

Choose a sanding belt by your machine’s specified width × full loop length. Match the exact model and configuration, then confirm the required size in the machine manual or manufacturer specification. Do not round an unfamiliar size to the nearest belt in the catalog.

References checked October 23, 2026. Each row links to a manufacturer specification or manufacturer-authored manual; archived copies are labelled. Match the exact model, market version and installed attachment. The TW90 size remains unconfirmed, and the Astro 3035 has conflicting published dimensions, as marked below. Keep metric dimensions as specified rather than assuming a similar inch size is interchangeable.

Three checks before ordering a replacement belt

  1. Find the exact model. Use the machine’s identification plate and manual, including any model suffix or configuration.
  2. Check the old belt. Look for printed dimensions on a correctly fitting belt. If the markings are missing, use our sanding-belt measurement guide and video to check its width and complete loop length.
  3. Confirm the application. After the size is established, select the abrasive and grit for your material and follow the machine and belt instructions.

Wide belt sanders

Confirm both belt width and full loop length from the exact machine specification. A width such as 37 inches does not identify the required length. Keep fractional dimensions and metric units as specified by the manufacturer.

Shop wide sanding belts

How to check a belt you already have

Remove the belt only as directed by the machine manual, with the machine switched off and disconnected from power. Measure its width straight across, edge to edge.

For an intact belt, gently lay the loop flat, measure from one end to the other and double the result. Treat that as an approximate check, and avoid making a sharp crease. A retired belt that will not be used again can instead be cut across its width and measured as one full strip; do not double the strip measurement.

Watch Maverick’s demonstration and see six worked size examples in How Do You Measure a Sanding Belt? If the measurement and printed size disagree, confirm the specification before ordering.

What if there is no old belt?

Find the manual using the exact model number, or ask the machine manufacturer for its belt specification. Roller spacing alone does not give the full belt length. Do not use tensioner travel as permission to substitute a different size.

When the required size is hard to find

Send Maverick the confirmed width × full loop length, units, machine make and model, work material, quantity and desired grit or finish. If the size is still uncertain, say so before requesting a custom order. Confirm available construction, minimum quantity and current lead time with the quote.

Request a custom sanding belt quote.

Belt direction and joint arrows

Follow the direction markings and installation instructions for the specific belt and machine. Norton’s coated abrasive belt guidance directs users to align an overlap-joint belt’s arrow with the running direction. Do not assume a butt-spliced belt can be reversed from its appearance alone; confirm the supplier’s instructions.

If a belt is damaged, will not track correctly or makes an unusual bumping noise, stop and check the belt and machine as directed by their manufacturers. Do not reverse a belt as a general remedy for loading or glazing.

Choose the abrasive after confirming the size

Browse Maverick sanding belts by size and application. Check the material-and-grit selector on the exact product page for available combinations. Dimensions alone do not establish that a belt is suitable for every work material or machine setup.

After confirming the size, choose a starting grit and plan the finishing steps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what size sanding belt my sander takes?

Start with the exact model’s manual or manufacturer specification. Compare it with the printed dimensions on a correctly fitting belt, then use a measurement as a check if needed.

Can I use a 3 × 21 belt on a 3 × 18 sander?

Use the size the machine manufacturer specifies. The two belts have the same width but different loop lengths; matching the width does not make them interchangeable.

Why does my measurement differ from the printed size?

First check whether you measured the full loop or only its flattened length, and confirm the units. Repeat the measurement using the step-by-step sizing guide. If it still differs, verify the required size before ordering.

Does sanding belt direction matter?

Yes. Follow the arrow and the instructions for the specific belt and machine. If direction is unclear, ask the belt supplier before installation.

What belt does a 2 × 72 knife grinder take?

A machine specified for that size uses a belt 2 inches wide and 72 inches around the complete loop. Check its exact manual and configuration before selecting the belt construction and abrasive.

My machine’s belt size is hard to find. What should I send Maverick?

Send the exact dimensions and units, model number, any belt markings, work material, quantity and finish goal. Confirm an uncertain measurement before placing a custom order.

What grit should I start with?

The starting grit depends on the work material, its current condition, the amount of material to remove and the required finish. Establish the belt size first, then check the product’s available abrasive and grit options for your application.

Can a file sander use every width in its published range?

Only with the appropriate contact arm. For example, Dynabrade supplies the 40320 with a ¾ × 18-inch arm and the 40352 with a ½ × 18-inch arm. The wider range in a specification does not mean every belt fits the arm already on your tool. Use the linked manufacturer reference for the exact setup.

Are metric and inch belt sizes always interchangeable?

No. Preserve the manufacturer’s stated dimensions. For example, Bosch specifies 75 × 533 mm for the GBS 75 AE and PBS 75 A, while an exact 3-inch width is 76.2 mm. A nominal product name or rounded conversion is not confirmation that a particular replacement belt fits.
