Fourteen feet of 4" belt fits the longer stroke sanders and production edge sanders that finish full-length panels, counters, extrusions and plate in one setup. Because every belt in this size is a large piece of cloth, choosing the right grain matters more than it does on a bench belt, so we stock the 4" x 168" in Ceramic, Zirconia, Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) and Cloth A/O and let you match the belt to the metal or wood you actually run.
All four are on Y-weight polyester or poly-cotton cloth that can be run wet or dry. We convert them in Anaheim, California, three to a pack, in 24 through 600 grit, with the coarse grits in zirconia and ceramic and the fine grits in aluminum oxide.

Which 4" x 168" belt should you choose?
Pick the grain for the material that spends the most hours under the pad, and keep a second grain on the rack for the exceptions.
- Ceramic (Shredder): stainless steel, hardened steel, tool steel and high-alloy plate. The orange-red grain continuously renews its cutting edges, so it removes stock faster and cooler than zirconia and keeps doing it for most of the belt's life. It needs firm, steady pad pressure to fracture; on a long belt that means a deliberate lean, not a light touch.
- Zirconia: mild and carbon steel, weld seams, mill scale and heavy flattening. Self-sharpening under moderate-to-heavy pressure, stocked 24 through 120 on a Y-weight polyester-cotton backing, wet or dry.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): zirconia with a topical grinding aid applied over the one already in the resin bond. The added lubricant keeps stainless below heat-tint temperature and stops aluminum packing the belt, which on a fourteen-foot belt protects a significant investment. Y-weight polyester, wet or dry.
- Cloth A/O: wood, veneer, MDF, plastics, aluminum, brass and copper, and every grit above 120. Aluminum oxide cuts cleanly at light pad pressure, leaves the most even scratch pattern and is the lowest-cost option; the 150 through 600 belts are all aluminum oxide. Poly-cotton cloth, wet or dry.
Grit availability differs by grain and the selector shows current stock. A metal shop typically keeps zirconia 60, Zirconia+ 120 and aluminum oxide 220 on hand; a woodshop keeps aluminum oxide 80, 120 and 150.

What machines take a 4" x 168" belt?
We have not verified individual models against the 4" x 168" size. Belt length on these machines is set by drum spacing and the tension travel, so confirm the length in your manual; a 148" or a 186" belt will not fit a machine built for 168". This length belongs to:
- Long horizontal stroke sanders with a 4" belt over an extended table, used for tabletops, doors and full-length panels.
- Production oscillating edge sanders with a long platen for door edges, counters and extrusions.
- Long belt grinders and deburring machines in metal shops that specify a 4" x 168" belt.
Mounting: back off the tension, carry the belt coiled, slide it over both drums grain side out, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way, re-tension, then turn the belt by hand and set tracking centered. Long belts take a minute to settle; re-check tracking under load before you start production. Other 4" lengths are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the pad or the part moving. The belt runs continuously; wherever the pad stops, the belt digs. Long overlapping strokes give an even surface and an even scratch.
- Match pressure to grain. Ceramic and zirconia need a firm lean to fracture and stay sharp; aluminum oxide on wood wants a light touch or it burns maple and cherry first.
- Protect thin aluminum sheet from heat. Use the Zirconia+ belt or aluminum oxide with a grease stick, take fast light passes, and let the sheet cool between them. A loaded belt smears aluminum instead of cutting it.
- Step grits without skipping more than one grade. 60 to 120 to 220 is fine; 36 straight to 220 leaves scratches that show under paint or finish.
- Keep extraction strong and belts clean. Loading is the main reason a long belt seems to die early. Clean aluminum oxide belts with a crepe rubber belt eraser at low pressure.
- Separate wood and metal dust. Sparks in a wood dust collector are a fire risk; use a metal-rated collector or wet collection for steel.
- Store belts hanging in their coil, away from humidity and sunlight, and let a cold belt warm to room temperature before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use a 4" x 168" belt on a machine that calls for a 148" or 186" belt?
No. Stroke and edge sanders have a fixed drum spacing and only a small range of tension travel, so the belt length has to match the manual. We stock 4" belts in several lengths and make any other 4" length to order in about 3 days, so order the length your machine specifies rather than forcing a different one.
Is ceramic worth it on a stroke sander?
On stainless, hardened steel and high-alloy plate, yes, because ceramic removes stock faster and cooler and holds its cut rate for most of its life, which matters when each belt is fourteen feet long. It only pays off if you apply firm, steady pad pressure; at a light touch it glazes, and Zirconia+ is the better choice.
How do I stop thin aluminum sheet from heating and warping under the belt?
Use Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) or Cloth A/O with a grease stick on the running belt, take quick light passes with the pad, and let the sheet cool between passes. Never dwell. Start no coarser than 60 grit and finish at 180 to 320 in aluminum oxide for an even grain that will anodize or paint well.
Do the fine grits come in every grain?
No. Zirconia is stocked from 24 through 120 because above that it stops self-sharpening and offers no advantage. The 150 through 600 grits in this 4" x 168" size are Cloth A/O, which leaves the most even scratch on both wood and metal. The variant selector shows which grits are held in each grain.
Can I run these belts on a woodworking stroke sander?
Yes, with Cloth A/O. Aluminum oxide is the grain we recommend for wood almost every time; zirconia and ceramic are too aggressive at pad pressure and tear or burn the surface. Keep 80 for flattening, 120 for general work and 150 or 180 for the last pass, and stop there before stain.
Which way does the belt run, and does it matter?
Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting. If there is one, mount the belt so it travels in that direction; running it backwards can lift the joint. If there is no arrow the joint is bi-directional. Either way, track the belt centered by hand before starting the motor.
What are the shipping and return terms on a 4" x 168" pack?
