Weld cleanup, edge chamfering and deburring on a small belt grinder is what the 3" x 30" size is bought for, so we stock it in the grains that survive steel: Zirconia, Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) and Ceramic, plus Cloth A/O for aluminum, brass and the fine finishing grits. Every option is on a Y-weight polyester or poly-cotton cloth backing that can be run wet or dry.
We convert these in Anaheim, California, and pack them twelve to a box in 24 through 600 grit. Buy zirconia or ceramic for the coarse grits that do the removal, grinding-aid zirconia for stainless that heat-tints, and aluminum oxide for everything from 150 up.

Which 3" x 30" belt should you choose?
Start with the metal you grind most, then check that your machine can supply the pressure the grain needs.
- Zirconia: the workhorse for mild and carbon steel, weld beads and heavy aluminum removal. It fractures under load to expose new edges, so it cuts fast and runs cooler than aluminum oxide as long as you lean on it. We stock it 24 through 120 on a Y-weight polyester-cotton backing, wet or dry.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): zirconia with a second grinding aid applied topically over the one in the resin bond. Use it on stainless, steel and any ferrous part where heat build-up shows as a blue tint, and on aluminum that packs a plain belt. Y-weight polyester, wet or dry.
- Ceramic (Shredder): the orange-red belt for stainless steel, hardened and tool steel and high-alloy material. Its grain structure continuously renews the cutting edge, so it removes stock faster and cooler than zirconia and keeps doing it for most of its life. It wants a rigid platen and firm pressure.
- Cloth A/O: the lowest-cost belt, on poly-cotton cloth, for aluminum, brass, copper and light steel work, and the only grain we carry above 120 grit. The 150 through 600 finishing belts are all aluminum oxide because it leaves the most even scratch on metal.
Grit availability differs by grain; the variant selector shows what is stocked. A typical 3" x 30" order for a steel shop is zirconia 36 and 80 plus aluminum oxide 180 and 320.

What machines take a 3" x 30" belt?
We have not verified specific models against the 3" x 30" size. Confirm the belt size in your manual or on the machine label; most machines tolerate only a small variation in length.
- Bench belt grinders and belt/disc combination sanders specified for a 3" x 30" belt, used for deburring and edge work in fabrication and machine shops.
- Small vertical belt grinders with a platen and contact wheel built around a 3" belt.
- Shop-built grinders whose wheel spacing gives a 30" loop.
Fitting: release tension, slide the belt on grain side out, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way, re-tension, then rotate by hand and adjust tracking until the belt rides centered on the platen. If your machine wants a different 3" length, we make it to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Let the coarse belt work under pressure. Zirconia and ceramic dull if you baby them. Press firmly, keep the part moving and let the grain fracture.
- Grind welds in stages. Knock the bead down at 24 or 36, blend at 60 to 80, then finish at 120 and above. Trying to do it all at 36 leaves gouges that take longer to remove than the bead did.
- Control heat on stainless. Choose Zirconia+ or ceramic, take steady passes, and quench in water when the part gets too hot to hold. A blued surface means you dwelled or the belt was dull.
- Lubricate aluminum. Run the belt wet where the machine allows it or rub a grease stick on the running belt; a loaded belt smears and heats rather than cutting.
- Use the full 3" width. Grooving at one line shortens belt life and puts a step in your parts.
- Keep metal dust out of the wood collector. Sparks and fine wood dust together are a fire risk; use a metal-rated collector or wet collection.
- Store belts hanging or loosely coiled, away from humidity, and let a cold belt come to room temperature before use.

Frequently asked questions
What grit should I use to remove a weld with a 3" x 30" belt?
Start at 24 or 36 grit in zirconia or ceramic to take the bead down to the parent metal, blend the area at 60 or 80, then move to 120 to remove the coarse scratch. Finish at 180 to 320 in aluminum oxide if the part will be painted or grained. Do not skip more than one grit.
Zirconia or ceramic: which 3" x 30" belt is the better value on steel?
Zirconia costs less per belt and is the right choice for mild and carbon steel on a bench machine. Ceramic costs more but cuts faster and cooler on stainless and hardened steel and holds its rate longer, so on hard material it usually works out cheaper per part. On a light-duty sander that cannot load it, ceramic is wasted.
When should I pick Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) over plain zirconia?
Pick Zirconia+ whenever heat is the problem. The topical grinding aid lubricates the cut, so stainless and steel stay below the temperature where they discolor and aluminum stops packing the belt. It costs a little more than plain zirconia and is the belt we recommend for stainless in the coarse grits.
Why does my belt load up when sanding aluminum?
Aluminum is soft and smears into the spaces between grains, especially on a dry, coarse belt under heavy pressure. Run the 3" x 30" belt wet if your machine allows it, rub a grease stick on the running belt, use Zirconia+ in the coarse grits, and ease the pressure. A crepe belt eraser clears light loading.
Can I use these 3" x 30" belts on wood as well?
The Cloth A/O belts work well on wood and plastics at any grit. Zirconia is too aggressive for most woodwork and can tear or burn the surface. Whatever you choose, keep separate belts for wood and steel, because steel swarf embedded in a belt leaves black marks on the next piece of wood.
How do I tell which way to mount the belt?
Look at the inside of the belt before mounting. If there is a printed arrow, run the belt so it travels in that direction; running it backwards can lift the joint. If there is no arrow the joint is bi-directional and either way works. Track the belt centered by hand before switching on.
