Grinding a primary bevel or cleaning up a weld on a 2 x 82 belt grinder asks two different things of a belt: a joint that will not bump through a delicate pass, and grain that keeps cutting under the high speed and tension those grinders run. We convert 2" x 82" belts in Anaheim, California, with reinforced poly-cotton backings, resin-over-resin bonding and precision butt joints that run in either direction, for the bladesmiths, fabricators and woodworkers who own this less common grinder size.

Which 2" x 82" belt should you choose?
Three options, each with a job. Grit availability differs by material; select the material first and the dropdown shows the grits we stock in it.
- Premium Ceramic: the belt for heavy stock removal on stainless steel and steel. Microcrystalline grain fractures as it works, constantly exposing fresh, sharp edges, which is the self-sharpening behaviour knife makers and metalworkers buy ceramic for. It withstands heat and pressure and it likes speed. Made on a Y-weight poly-cotton backing, wet or dry. Stocked in the coarse-to-medium band (36, 40, 60, 80 and 120, with 24 where offered) for profiling blades, grinding bevels and removing scale.
- Aluminum Oxide (X-weight): poly-cotton backing, wet or dry, good on both metal and wood, with the widest grit range on the listing, 36 all the way to 800. It is the belt for wood, general fabrication, and every fine grit from 150 up on steel. It is not the best choice for stock removal on stainless or steel in the coarse grits; that is what ceramic is for.
- AO J-flex: aluminum oxide on an extra-flexible, thin J-weight cloth for slack-belt sanding and curved work: handle scales, finger grooves, spines, rounded spars and any shape a platen cannot follow. Not for grinding against a platen, where the thin backing cannot take the load. Offered in select grits.
A typical knife-shop kit for a 2 x 82 grinder is ceramic 36 or 40 for profiling, ceramic 60 and 80 for bevels, ceramic 120 to refine, then aluminum oxide 220 through 400 before hand sanding, with a J-flex belt or two for handles. A woodshop or general fab shop can run aluminum oxide across the board.

What machines take a 2" x 82" belt?
- 2 x 82 belt grinders used in custom knife shops and small fabrication shops. The 82" length is less common than 2 x 72, so if your grinder takes it, it is this belt and nothing else on the shelf.
- Variable-speed grinders get the most from ceramic, which wants speed and pressure, and from J-flex, which wants a slower slack-belt pass.
- Industrial 2" belt grinders and backstand machines specified for an 82" belt path.
The butt joint is bi-directional, so the belt can be mounted either way. Tension it, jog the grinder and centre the tracking on the platen and wheels before the work touches the belt. Confirm the length in your manual; 2 x 72 belts will not tension on a 2 x 82 grinder. If you run a length or width we do not list, we make custom belts to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Give ceramic pressure and speed. The grain only fractures and renews under load. Run it light and it glazes, stops cutting and puts heat into the blade. Lean in, keep the pass moving, and let the resin-over-resin bond do its job of carrying heat away.
- Protect the temper. Dip the blade in water between passes, slow the grinder for thin edges and tips, and stop the moment the steel shows any colour.
- Platen for flat, slack belt for curves. Bevels, flats and tangs go against the platen with ceramic or X-weight aluminum oxide. Handles, finger grooves and rounded spines go on the slack run with J-flex.
- Step grits in order. 36 or 40 to 60 to 80 to 120, then 220, 320, 400. A skipped grit leaves a coarse scratch that shows under the satin and doubles the hand-sanding time.
- Switch to aluminum oxide above 120. Ceramic is a removal grain; the fine-grit finish work belongs to the X-weight aluminum oxide, which is why it runs to 800.
- Run wet where you can. Every backing here is wet-or-dry. Coolant on stainless keeps the surface bright and extends belt life.
- Keep metal dust out of the wood collector. Grinding sparks and wood dust in one collector are a fire risk; use a dedicated metal-rated collector or a bucket of water under the grinder.
- Store belts hanging and let a cold belt warm to room temperature before running it at grinder speed.

Frequently asked questions
Which 2" x 82" belt is best for grinding knife bevels?
Premium ceramic in 36 through 80 grit. The microcrystalline grain fractures as it cuts and keeps exposing sharp edges, so it removes stock fast on stainless, carbon and tool steel while running cooler than aluminum oxide. Refine with ceramic 120, then move to aluminum oxide 220 through 400 for the pre-finish before hand sanding.
Can I use these belts for wet grinding?
Yes. The ceramic belts are on a Y-weight poly-cotton backing and the aluminum oxide belts on X-weight poly-cotton, and both are made to run wet or dry. Wet grinding on stainless keeps the surface bright, controls dust and extends belt life; most knife makers run dry and dip the blade in water between passes.
What is an AO J-flex belt and when do I use it?
AO J-flex is aluminum oxide on an extra-flexible, thin J-weight cloth. It is made for slack-belt sanding, where the belt runs unsupported between wheels and wraps around handle scales, finger grooves, spines and other curves. It is not for grinding against a platen; the backing is too light for that load. It is offered in select grits.
Why does aluminum oxide go to 800 grit but ceramic stops at 120?
Ceramic is a stock-removal grain that needs pressure to keep fracturing, and that stops working at fine grit sizes, so we stock it from 24 or 36 to 120 for profiling and bevels. Aluminum oxide finishes cleanly at light pressure, so it carries the range from 150 through 800 for pre-finish, satin and pre-polish work on a 2" x 82" grinder.
Do you offer zirconia in 2" x 82"?
Not as a stocked option on this listing; the live materials are premium ceramic, aluminum oxide and AO J-flex. For stainless and heavy removal the ceramic belt is the stronger choice anyway. Will a 2" x 82" belt fit a 2 x 72 grinder?
No. A 2" x 82" belt is ten inches longer than a 2 x 72 and will not tension on a 2 x 72 grinder, and a 2 x 72 belt will not reach on a 2 x 82 machine. Match the length in your grinder's manual. We stock both sizes, and we make other 2" lengths to order in about 3 days.
