Appliance fronts, elevator panels and architectural cladding are judged on one thing: whether the grain on every panel matches. A 36-inch wide belt machine running one of these 36" x 75" surface conditioning belts produces that match mechanically, feeding each stainless or aluminum panel under a non-woven web that lays a straight, even satin from edge to edge and repeats it on the next panel without operator variation.
The belt is aluminum oxide grain in a nylon web on a reinforced scrim backing built for automated machine tension. Four grades are stocked, Coarse, Medium, Very Fine and Ultra Fine, one belt per order, covering finish stripping and rust removal at one end and a fine pre-buff satin at the other.

Which grade should you run for panel work?
All four grades share the same web and backing. The grain inside the web sets how aggressive the belt is and how fine the finished grain line looks.
- Coarse (40-60 Grit), brown: stripping and cleaning. It takes old paint, powder coat haze, light rust and oxidation off sheet without gouging it the way a coated belt would, and it gives aluminum a bold brushed grain. It removes measurable metal under pressure, so run it at the lightest head setting that does the job.
- Medium (80-120 Grit), maroon: deburring and a medium satin. Behind a 120 grit coated belt it rolls the burr on laser-cut and sheared blanks and leaves an even matte that paint and powder coat adhere to.
- Very Fine (180-240 Grit), blue: the #4-style panel finish. Behind a 180–220 grit coated belt on stainless sheet it produces the long, uniform directional grain that appliance and architectural panels are specified to match.
- Ultra Fine (320-400 Grit), grey: fine satin and pre-buff. Run after Very Fine on aluminum trim, appliance fronts and parts headed for buffing or anodizing. Ultra Fine refines an existing finish and will not remove scratches by itself.
Panel shops normally keep Very Fine on the machine and a Medium on the rack; Coarse and Ultra Fine cover specific jobs.

A non-woven belt refines the scratch from the coated belt ahead of it by about one step. Finish the coated head at 120 grit before Medium and at 180 or 220 grit before Very Fine or Ultra Fine; a coarser coated scratch will remain visible under the satin.
Which machines take a 36" x 75" surface conditioning belt?
- 36-inch wide belt sanders, graining machines and deburring machines specified for a 36" x 75" belt, including the Timesaver-type automated sanders the original listing for this belt described.
- 37-inch-class machines (Grizzly 37", SuperMax 37x2, Timesaver 37 style) only if the manual specifies a 36-inch belt width; most of these call for 37 inches, which we stock as a 37" x 75" version. A belt narrower than the drum leaves a strip of full-width sheet unfinished.
If your machine takes a 60-inch belt, use the 36" x 60" version. Length tolerance is about a quarter inch on most machines. The belt has no direction arrow; mount it either way, tension to the maker's setting, jog the machine and confirm the oscillation is centred. Set the non-woven head lighter than a coated belt of the same size; the web makes full contact at low pressure and tears if overloaded. Metal swarf goes to a metal-rated or wet collector, never a wood-dust system.
How to get the most out of it
- Set the scratch first. Take the panel to 120 grit for Medium or 180–220 grit for Very Fine and Ultra Fine with a coated belt. Our 36" x 75" aluminum oxide and zirconia belts and 36" x 75" metalworking belts are the same-size coated companions.
- Run light. Lower the head until the satin is continuous across the width and stop. Extra pressure tears web fibres, shortens belt life and can heat and oil-can a thin panel.
- Slow the feed, not the head, to deepen the grain. A slower conveyor gives the web more dwell without the damage that pressure causes.
- Feed every panel the same way. Long axis parallel to belt travel, show face up on the final pass, never rotated between passes.
- Protect the finished face. Apply protective film as panels come off the machine and stack them film to film; a finished panel dragged across a table picks up cross-scratches that cannot be blended out.
- Lubricate aluminum lightly. A mist or grease stick swipe stops aluminum smearing into the web. Stainless and steel run dry.
- No belt eraser, and hang it to store. Crepe rubber pulls web fibres. Hang the belt on a wide dowel out of sunlight; a folded belt creases and prints a line on the next panel.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a 36" x 75" and a 37" x 75" belt, and which do I need?
One inch of width. A 36" x 75" belt fits machines specified for a 36-inch belt; most 37-inch-class single-head sanders are specified for 37 inches. Check the manual rather than the nameplate. Running a belt narrower than the drum leaves an unfinished strip on full-width sheet, and a wider one can foul the guarding or tracking sensor.
Can a surface conditioning belt strip old paint or powder coat from sheet?
The Coarse (40-60 Grit) belt strips paint, powder coat haze and oxidation from flat sheet without gouging the metal the way a coated belt does, because the web conforms and removes very little base material. Fully cured, thick powder coat is slow; a coated belt first, then Coarse or Medium to blend, is faster.
Which coated grit should come before Very Fine on aluminum?
Finish the coated belt at 180 or 220 grit, then run the Very Fine (180-240 Grit) belt with a light lubricant. Aluminum shows coated scratches more readily than stainless, so do not skip from 120 straight to the non-woven belt if the panel is a show face. For Ultra Fine, run Very Fine first.
How do I know when the belt is worn out?
The grain line gets faint at the same feed and pressure, the web feels thin and the scrim backing starts to show through in patches. Replace the belt at that point rather than adding head pressure; a worn 36" x 75" belt run hard tears and heats the panel instead of finishing it.
Why do I get cross-scratches on panels that looked perfect off the machine?
Handling. A finished satin panel slid across an outfeed table, stacked face to face without film, or wiped with a gritty rag picks up random scratches that read as defects against the straight grain. Film panels as they leave the machine, stack film to film, and handle them by the edges.
