A consistent number 4 style brushed finish on a full stainless sheet is not a hand-tool job; it comes off a 37-inch class Timesaver-type wide belt sander running the right sequence of belts at a steady feed. These 36" x 75" Timesaver sanding belts for metal cover that sequence end to end: ceramic and grinding-aid zirconia for scale, weld and deburr passes at 24–120 grit, then cloth aluminum oxide from 150 through 600 for the grain lines and pre-polish.
All three grains are on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth that runs wet or dry, so they work on coolant-fed graining heads as well as dry deburring machines with a metal-rated collector. We convert them in Anaheim, California and ship two belts to a pack.

Which grain should you run for each stage of a stainless or steel finish?
On a graining line the grain type changes with the stage. Removal belts need a grain that fractures under load; finish belts need a grain that leaves a uniform, closed scratch.
- Ceramic (orange-red belt): the removal grain for 304 and 316 stainless, hardened and tool steel. It renews its cutting points continuously and holds a near-constant rate with less heat than zirconia, provided the machine keeps it under pressure. Run light, it glazes and puts tint into the sheet. Stocked 24, 36, 40, 60, 80 and 120 grit.
- Zirconia (green or blue belt): the removal grain for mild steel plate, tube and A36 fabrications, and the cooler option on stainless when the machine cannot load ceramic. Ours carries a grinding aid in the resin bond and a second one coated on top, which lubricates the cut and keeps aluminum and stainless from loading. Stocked 24, 36, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 and 120 grit.
- Cloth A/O (brown belt): heat-treated aluminum oxide on the same poly-cotton cloth. It is the finishing grain on every metal and the only grain in this listing at 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600; it is also the right choice for aluminum sheet, brass and copper at any grit.
A typical brushed stainless sequence is 80 or 120 ceramic or zirconia to remove scale and blend, then 150 and 220 cloth AO for the grain, then a surface conditioning belt to soften it. For a finer satin, continue to 320 or 400 before the non-woven pass.

Do not skip more than one grade between belts. A 220 belt will not remove an 80 scratch; the line stays under the grain and shows after polishing. On aluminum start at 60–80, keep speed down and finish at 120–220 before the non-woven belt.
What machines take a 36" x 75" Timesaver belt?

Timesaver is a brand and also the name most shops use for any wide belt sander, so go by the belt dimensions on your machine plate. Width must be exact; length on most machines tolerates about plus or minus a quarter inch, and the tracking oscillation centres the belt in that window. We have not verified specific model numbers for this size. If your machine calls for a different length, we make 36-inch wide belts to order in about three days. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed.
How to get the most out of them
- Isolate metal dust. Steel sparks or aluminum fines in a collector that holds wood dust are a fire risk. Use a dedicated metal-rated collector with a spark arrestor, or wet collection.
- Load the removal grains. Ceramic and zirconia self-sharpen only under pressure. If the belt goes shiny and the sheet warms, increase depth of cut or fit a fresh belt; do not slow the feed.
- Grain on the platen at a constant feed. Use the contact drum for 24–120 removal and platen pressure for 150 and finer. Any change in feed speed during the graining pass shows as a band in the finish.
- Never stop under the head. Dwell blues stainless and leaves a dark bar across the grain that will not come out without regrinding.
- Run wet when the machine allows. The poly-cotton backing tolerates coolant, and a wet graining head gives a cleaner line with less tint.
- Aluminum runs slower. Lower belt speed, cloth AO or grinding-aid zirconia, and a grease stick on the running belt when it loads. Clean with a crepe eraser.
- Hang spares on a wide peg away from humidity and sunlight, and let cold belts warm before running.

What belt sequence gives a number 4 brushed finish on stainless with 36" x 75" belts?

Why do I get dark bands across the grain on stainless?
Bands are heat marks from a change in feed or a stop under the head, or from a glazed belt that is rubbing instead of cutting. Keep the conveyor speed constant through the whole sheet, never pause under the platen, run coolant if the machine has it, and replace a belt as soon as its cut rate drops.
Is a Timesaver belt the same as a wide belt sander belt?
Yes. Timesaver is a brand of wide belt sander and the generic name most shops use for the machine type. A 36" x 75" Timesaver belt is a 36-inch wide, 75-inch long wide belt and fits any machine built for that size, whatever the brand on the door.
Which grain for weld removal on mild steel plate before graining?
Zirconia. Start at 36 or 40 grit on the contact drum to take the weld flush, step to 60 and then 80–120 to blend, then move to cloth aluminum oxide at 150 and finer for the grain. On stainless plate use ceramic for the coarse passes to keep the heat down.
Can I run these 36" x 75" belts on aluminum sheet?
Yes. Use cloth aluminum oxide at a reduced belt speed, starting at 60 or 80 grit and finishing at 120–220 before a surface conditioning belt or anodizing. Rub a grease stick on the running belt if it starts to load, and clean with a crepe eraser rather than pressing harder.
Do these belts run wet?
Yes. Ceramic, zirconia and cloth aluminum oxide are all on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth built to run wet or dry, so they suit coolant-fed graining machines and wet deburring heads. Wet running lowers part temperature and reduces heat tint on stainless.
How many belts per pack and can you supply a full grit set?
