Laser-cut and sheared blanks leave a shop with two problems: a burr on every edge and a scratch pattern that does not match the rest of the job. A 36-inch wide belt machine fitted with one of these 36" x 60" surface conditioning belts fixes both in a single pass, softening the edge without changing the part dimension and laying a uniform linear grain across the whole face of stainless, aluminum or steel sheet.
The belt is a nylon web loaded with aluminum oxide grain on a reinforced scrim backing, which is what lets it track and hold tension on an automated wide belt head. We stock it in Coarse, Medium, Very Fine and Ultra Fine, sold one belt at a time, and it is designed to follow a 120–220 grit coated belt rather than replace it.

Which grade should you run for deburring and graining?
The four grades share the same web and backing; the grain size in the web sets how much it cuts and how fine the grain line is. Pick by the job that the belt will spend most of its life doing.
- Coarse (40-60 Grit), brown: heavy deburring of thick plasma- and laser-cut plate, removing mill haze and light rust, and a bold brushed grain on aluminum. It removes more material than the other grades, so use the lightest head setting that still cleans the edge.
- Medium (80-120 Grit), maroon: the production deburring grade for sheet-metal shops. It rolls the burr off laser-cut stainless and mild steel, blends the scratch from a 120 grit coated belt and leaves a medium satin that paint and powder coat key to well.
- Very Fine (180-240 Grit), blue: the #4-style finishing grade for stainless sheet and architectural panels. Run after a 180–220 grit coated belt it gives the long, even grain that customers compare against mill-finish #4 sheet.
- Ultra Fine (320-400 Grit), grey: a fine, low-contrast satin for appliance panels, aluminum trim and anything that goes to buffing afterwards. Ultra Fine will not remove a coarse scratch on its own; it refines what a 220 grit coated belt and a Very Fine pass have already produced.
A common two-head setup is a 120 or 180 grit coated belt on the first head and a Medium or Very Fine non-woven belt on the second.

Skipping the coated step is the most common mistake on a wide belt deburring line. A non-woven belt will round a burr and refine a 120–220 scratch, but it will not remove a 60 grit scratch or a weld; those need a coated zirconia or ceramic belt first.
Which machines take a 36" x 60" belt?
- 36-inch wide belt sanders and deburring machines specified for a 36" x 60" belt. Machines in the 37-inch single-head class (Grizzly 37", SuperMax 37x2, Timesaver 37 style) are usually specified for a 37-inch belt; check the manual and order the width it calls for, because a belt one inch under the drum width leaves an unfinished strip on one edge of full-width sheet.

Length matters as much as width. Most machines tolerate about a quarter inch of length variation; if your manual calls for 75 inches, use our 36" x 75" version instead. The belt has no direction arrow and mounts either way round. Tension to the maker's specification, jog the machine to confirm the oscillation is centred, and reduce head pressure below what you would use for a coated belt of the same size. Metal swarf must go to a metal-rated or wet collector; never share a collector with wood dust.
How to get the most out of it
- Run the coated belt first. Take parts to 120 grit for a Medium finish or 180–220 for Very Fine and Ultra Fine. Our 36" x 60" coated wide belts for wood and general work and 36" x 60" metalworking belts in zirconia and ceramic are the same-size companions.
- Light pressure, steady feed. Set the non-woven head so it just contacts the part and the grain line is continuous across the width. If the finish is faint, slow the conveyor before you add pressure; extra pressure tears the web and heats thin sheet.
- One feed direction, every part. Load every blank the same way with its long axis parallel to belt travel. A part fed sideways or flipped between passes shows a crossed grain that cannot be fixed without going back to the coated belt.
- Deburr both faces. Laser cutting leaves the heavier burr on the underside. Run the part face down first, then face up for the cosmetic pass.
- Lubricate aluminum lightly. A mist or a swipe of grease stick stops soft aluminum smearing into the web. Stainless and mild steel run dry.
- Keep extraction strong and skip the belt eraser. The web sheds swarf on its own; a crepe belt eraser pulls fibres out of a non-woven belt and should stay on the coated-belt rack.
- Hang the belt when it comes off. Store on a wide dowel out of sunlight and humidity. A fold in a non-woven belt prints through as a line in the finish.

Frequently asked questions
My machine is listed as a 37-inch sander. Should I order a 36 or 37 inch belt?
Order the width your manual specifies. A 36" x 60" belt fits machines built for a 36-inch belt; most 37-inch-class single-head sanders are specified for a 37-inch belt and we stock that width separately. Running a belt narrower than the drum leaves a strip of full-width sheet unfinished on one side.
Can a surface conditioning belt deburr laser-cut stainless without a coated belt first?
For a light burr on thin sheet, yes; a Medium 36" x 60" belt will roll the edge over on its own. For a heavy dross line on thicker plate, run a 120 grit coated belt first. The non-woven belt refines the surface and softens edges, but it is not designed to remove dross or deep cut marks.
Which grade should I use before powder coating?
Medium (80-120 Grit) is the usual choice. It leaves a uniform satin with enough tooth for powder or paint to bond, removes light oxidation and mill haze, and takes the burr off cut edges so the coating does not thin out over a sharp corner. Coarse is only needed for heavy scale or rust.
Why does the finish fade or streak partway through a run?
Three causes account for most of it: head pressure set too high, which tears fibres out of the web and thins it unevenly; a coated-belt scratch underneath that varies from part to part; or aluminum smearing into the web. Reduce pressure, check the coated head, and add a light lubricant on aluminum.
How long does a 36" x 60" non-woven belt last compared with a coated belt?
Run at light pressure, a non-woven belt outlasts a coated belt of the same size in a finishing role because it does not load or glaze the way coated grain does; the web keeps presenting fresh grain as it wears. Heavy pressure reverses that quickly. Life depends on material, pressure and feed, so we do not quote a figure.
