These 6" x 132" metalworking belts are cut for long-bed oscillating edge sanders and wide-platen stroke sanders built around this length, in zirconia for steel plate and iron, ceramic for stainless and hardened plate, Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) for stainless and aluminum that heats and loads, and Cloth A/O for the 150–600 grit finishing belts.
We convert them in Anaheim, California on a Y-weight poly-cotton backing with heat-treated grain, so a 132" loop tracks straight across a 6" drum and takes pressure at the platen without stretching. Which grain should you choose for plate and panel work on a 6" x 132"?
Long edge sanders and stroke sanders apply moderate, steady pressure over a large area, so the grain choice is about the metal and how hard you can feed it into the platen.
- Zirconia: the workhorse for steel plate, flat bar, cast iron and general fabrication edges. Self-sharpens under moderate-to-heavy feed pressure; offered 24–120 grit. Squaring plasma-cut plate and flattening weld seams is zirconia work.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): zirconia with a grinding-aid top coat over the aid in the resin. Cooler and loading-resistant, it is the belt for stainless plate and sheet, aluminum plate, extrusions and titanium, and for any long pass where the edge starts to blue or the belt packs.
- Ceramic: the orange-red belt for stainless plate, hardened and tool steel and nickel alloys. It holds a constant cut rate for its life but only under firm pressure; feed thick plate hard into the platen and it repays you, feed it lightly and it glazes and heats the edge.
- Cloth A/O: heat-treated aluminum oxide, forgiving at light pressure, right for brass, bronze and soft aluminum and for every 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit belt in this listing. This is the grain for the finished edge or the final directional grain on a panel.
Above 120 grit, zirconia and ceramic leave a bright scratch rather than a finish; move to Cloth A/O and then a non-woven belt if a satin finish is required.

Step no more than one grade at a time. Thick mild steel plate goes 36 zirconia, 60, then 120 if the edge shows; a stainless panel goes 80 Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid), 120, then 180 and 220 Cloth A/O in one direction. Aluminum plate goes 80, 120, 220 Cloth A/O with the grease stick on the belt.

Long-machine belt lengths vary widely, so measure an old belt or check the manual; we also stock 6" x 89" and other long lengths. Mounting: release tension, thread the belt over both drums with any printed arrow (check the inside) pointing in the direction of rotation, re-tension and jog the machine while adjusting tracking until the belt runs centred on both drums, then let it oscillate through a full cycle before feeding metal. If no arrow is printed the joint runs either way. Lengths we do not list are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Separate the dust system. Long edge and stroke sanders are almost always ducted to a wood-dust collector; steel sparks into that duct is a fire risk. Blank off the wood line and use a dedicated metal-rated or wet collector before grinding steel.
- Use the full 6" face. Keep thick plate flat on the table and against the whole platen width; tipping the plate onto a corner of the belt grooves it and rounds the edge.
- Feed firmly with zirconia and ceramic. Both grains stay sharp only while they micro-fracture under load; a shiny, quiet belt on plate is glazed. Ease off for Cloth A/O and let the belt cut.
- Keep the part moving along the belt so the long loop carries heat away and no single spot blues. On a stroke sander, keep the pad moving and grain in one direction only.
- Lubricate aluminum. Rub a grease stick on the running belt, use the grinding-aid or Cloth A/O belts and lighter pressure, and clean the belt with a crepe belt eraser as soon as it loads.
- Run wet where the machine allows. The poly-cotton backing tolerates coolant; a mist keeps stainless and titanium edges cool. Most long-bed machines run dry.
- Track and store long belts carefully. A 132" belt drifts more than a short one, so re-check tracking after the first minute of running. Store spares hanging on a wide peg or loosely rolled, dry and out of sunlight, and warm cold belts before running.

Does ceramic make sense on a long edge sander?
For stainless plate, hardened steel and nickel alloys fed firmly into the platen, yes; ceramic holds a steady cut rate for its whole life on hard metals. For mild steel plate and general deburring, zirconia does the job for less. Whichever you choose, feed hard enough that the grain keeps fracturing; a light touch glazes ceramic and heats the edge.
Why does a long belt like this drift, and how do I stop it?
A 132" loop has more length to stretch and settle than a short belt, so it can wander during the first minute of running.
