Which grain should you run on a stroke sander for metal?
Pad pressure on a stroke sander is lighter than a belt grinder's platen, so grain choice leans toward the grains that cut well under moderate load and stay cool. Pick by the metal.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): the first belt to reach for on stainless sheet, aluminum panels and titanium. It is zirconia with a grinding-aid top coat over the aid in the resin, so it cuts cooler and resists loading, which is exactly what a long pass under a pad needs. Use it for the coarse and medium graining passes on stainless.
- Zirconia: carbon and mild steel plate, cast iron and general fabrication. Self-sharpens under moderate-to-heavy pad pressure; offered 24–120 grit. The belt for flattening steel plate and blending welds on a stroke sander.
- Ceramic: the orange-red belt for stainless plate, hardened and tool steel. It needs firm pressure to keep fracturing, which means a hard pad pressed firmly; run with a soft pad or a light hand it glazes and heats the panel. Best for heavy stock removal on stainless plate where you can bear down.
- Cloth A/O: heat-treated aluminum oxide, forgiving at light pad pressure, right for brass, bronze and soft aluminum and for every 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit belt in this listing. This is the grain that produces the final directional grain on stainless and aluminum.
Zirconia and ceramic above 120 grit give a bright scratch rather than a finish. Do the graining passes on Cloth A/O, then a non-woven belt for a uniform satin.

How to get the most out of it
- Separate the metal dust. Stroke sanders are woodworking machines by origin and usually share a wood-dust collector; steel sparks into that system is a fire risk. Blank off the wood line and use a dedicated metal-rated or wet collector.
- Keep the pad moving. Press the pad down and draw it steadily along the panel; never stop with the pad down or the belt will dig a low spot and blue stainless. Overlap strokes by half the pad width.
- Match pad hardness to the grain. Use a hard pad and firm pressure with zirconia and ceramic so the grain keeps fracturing; a softer pad and lighter pressure with Cloth A/O for the final grain.
- Grain in one direction only. A directional finish on stainless or aluminum shows every cross stroke; run every grit the same way and let the belt speed do the work.
- Lubricate aluminum. Rub a grease stick on the running belt, use the grinding-aid or Cloth A/O belts and light pad pressure, and clean the belt with a crepe belt eraser as soon as it loads.
- Run wet if the machine allows. The poly-cotton backing tolerates coolant; a mist keeps stainless cool through long graining passes. Most stroke sanders run dry.
- Store long belts hanging. A 132" belt that sits folded takes a set and thumps under the pad. Hang spares on a wide peg or roll them loosely, dry and out of sunlight, and warm cold belts before running.
