Weld knockdown and plate levelling are the jobs that separate a wide belt sander from a wide belt sander that is actually set up for steel: the machine needs horsepower, a metal-rated collector, and a belt that fractures under load instead of glazing. These 36" x 60" metalworking belts are that belt, in zirconia with a grinding aid for mild steel plate and fabrications, ceramic for stainless, hardened and tool steel, and cloth aluminum oxide for aluminum and for every finishing grit from 150 to 600.
They run on 37-inch class single-head wide belt sanders that use a 60-inch belt path, on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth that takes drum pressure without stretching and runs wet or dry. We convert them in Anaheim, California and pack them in twos.

Which grain should you choose for weld removal, steel plate or stainless?
A 37-inch class machine has the power to load a metal grain properly, so the choice here is mostly about the metal and how much heat the part can take.
- Zirconia (green or blue belt): the workhorse for mild steel, A36 and hot-rolled plate, tube frames and weld beads. It micro-fractures under drum pressure and keeps a fresh edge through the whole coarse range. Ours carries a grinding aid in the resin bond and a second one coated on the grain, which cools the part and reduces loading, so it is also the cooler choice on stainless. Stocked 24, 36, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 and 120 grit.
- Ceramic (orange-red belt): for 304 and 316 stainless, hardened steel, tool steel and heavy plate where heat tint or warping is the enemy. Ceramic renews its cutting points continuously and removes stock cooler and faster than zirconia as long as the machine keeps it under load. Stocked 24, 36, 40, 60, 80 and 120 grit.
- Cloth A/O (brown belt): heat-treated aluminum oxide on the same poly-cotton cloth. It is the grain for aluminum plate, brass and copper at any grit, and the only grain offered at 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600, so every graining and pre-polish pass after the metal grains is an AO belt.
Above 120 grit, move to cloth AO whatever the metal. Zirconia and ceramic stop fracturing usefully at fine grits and leave a bright, uneven scratch instead of a finish.

On aluminum plate, start at 60, keep belt speed down and finish at 120–220 before a surface conditioning belt. Whatever the metal, never skip more than one grade between belts; the fine belt polishes the bottom of a coarse scratch rather than removing it.
What machines take a 36" x 60" belt?
- 37-inch class single-head wide belt sanders with a 60-inch belt path, when set up for metal with a metal-rated dust system or wet collection.
- Deburring and finishing machines for laser, plasma and waterjet parts and plate up to 36 inches wide.
- Converted woodworking wide belt sanders of the Grizzly 37-inch and SuperMax-class type, provided the dust system has been changed over for steel.
Width must match your machine exactly. Length on most wide belt machines tolerates about plus or minus a quarter inch, and the tracking oscillation centres the belt within that window. We have not verified specific model numbers for this size, so check the belt dimensions on your machine plate or in the manual. If your machine calls for a length other than 60 inches, we make 36-inch wide belts to order in about three days. Look inside the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed.
How to get the most out of them
- Separate the dust before you start. Steel sparks in a collector that holds wood dust is a fire waiting to happen. Run a dedicated metal-rated collector with a spark arrestor, or wet collection, on any machine that runs these belts.
- Take the weld down in passes. Set the drum for a real cut and make two or three passes at 24–40 rather than one heavy pass that heats the plate and warps it.
- Keep the grain loaded. Ceramic and zirconia self-sharpen only under pressure. A shiny belt and a warm part mean the cut is too light or the belt is spent; increase depth of cut or change the belt, do not slow the conveyor.
- No dwell. Stopping the feed with stainless under the drum blues it in seconds and leaves a low spot on any metal.
- Drum for removal, platen for finish. Use the contact drum at 24–120 and the platen at 150 and finer for a flat, even scratch.
- Slow down for aluminum. Lower belt speed, cloth AO or grinding-aid zirconia, and a grease stick on the running belt when it starts to load. Clean with a crepe belt eraser.
- Run wet where the machine allows and store spare belts hanging on a wide peg away from humidity and sunlight; let cold belts warm before running.

Frequently asked questions
Which 36" x 60" belt is best for grinding welds flush on steel plate?
Start with 24 or 36 grit zirconia on the contact drum for mild steel, or 24–36 grit ceramic for stainless or heavy plate where heat matters. Take the crown down in two or three passes, then step through 60 and 80–120 to blend. Finish with cloth aluminum oxide if the plate will be grained.
Can a woodworking 37-inch wide belt sander run these metalworking belts?
Mechanically yes, but only after the dust system is changed over. Steel sparks and fine metal dust must go to a dedicated metal-rated collector with a spark arrestor, or wet collection; they must never enter a collector that has wood dust in it. Fit the metal belt only once that is done.
Zirconia or ceramic for stainless steel plate?
Ceramic on a machine with the power to load it; it holds a constant cut and runs cooler, which keeps 304 and 316 from tinting or warping. Our grinding-aid zirconia is the fallback on a lighter machine, because the lubricating coat controls heat at moderate pressure. Both stop at 120 grit.
What grits are stocked in each grain on this size?
Zirconia is stocked 24, 36, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 and 120. Ceramic is stocked 24, 36, 40, 60, 80 and 120. Cloth aluminum oxide runs from 24 up through 600, and it is the only grain at 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit. The selector shows live availability.
Can these 36" x 60" belts be run wet?
Yes. All three grains are on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth built to run wet or dry, so they suit coolant-fed deburring and graining machines as well as dry machines with a metal-rated collector. Wet running lowers part temperature and keeps the belt from loading.
Why does my steel plate warp after wide belt sanding?
Heat. One deep pass with a dull or glazed belt puts heat into one face of the plate and it bows. Use a sharp coarse belt, take the stock off in two or three lighter passes, keep the feed constant, use coolant if the machine has it, and flip thin plate between passes when the job allows.
