A 2" wide belt eleven feet long is a stroke sander and edge sander belt: the long loop lets the abrasive cool between passes, and the narrow width lets the operator reach into rebates, curved edges and profiles that a 6" belt cannot follow. We convert 2" x 132" belts in Anaheim, California, with a choice of three aluminum oxide backings because on a long narrow belt the backing decides how the belt behaves as much as the grain does.
Pick AL/OX X-weight for flat edge sanding and platen work, AL/OX J-weight for contours, and Al/OX J-flex when the belt has to wrap tight profiles on a slack section. Zirconia and Ceramic are stocked for shops running the same machines on steel. Six belts per pack, 24 through 400 grit.

Which 2" x 132" belt should you choose?
Match the backing to the shape of the work first, then the grain to the material.
- AL/OX X-weight: heavy, stiff poly-cotton cloth with heat-treated aluminum oxide. This is the belt for flat edge sanding against a platen, for squaring panel edges, and for any job where the belt must not conform to the work. Use it on solid wood, plywood, MDF and plastics.
- AL/OX J-weight: a lighter, more flexible cloth. It follows gentle curves and moulded edges on a slack section or a soft contact wheel without cracking at the grain line, and it gives a slightly softer scratch pattern at the same grit. The choice for chair parts, curved rails and radiused edges.
- Al/OX J-flex: the most flexible backing we offer in this size, pre-flexed so it wraps tight profiles and small-radius contact wheels without stiffness. Use it for shaped mouldings, handrail profiles, turned and carved parts and hand-guided contour sanding on a stroke sander. Do not use it on a platen where you want a dead-flat result.
- Zirconia: for steel fabrication on an edge or stroke sander: weld knockdown, mill scale, deburring plate edges and heavy stock removal on dense hardwood. Zirconia needs moderate-to-heavy pressure to self-sharpen. Stocked in the coarse and medium grits; above 120 use aluminum oxide.
- Ceramic: for stainless, hardened and alloy steel on rigid, powered machines that can supply real pressure. It holds a steady cut rate through its life but glazes and heats the part if run lightly. Not a woodworking belt.
The previous version of this page mentioned silicon carbide; it is not stocked in 2" x 132" but can be quoted as a custom belt. Not every grain is stocked in every grit, so check the variant selector.

Step one grit at a time. On a long belt the temptation is to jump grits because belt changes take longer; the scratch left behind takes longer still to remove.
What machines take a 2" x 132" belt?
- Stroke sanders set up with a 2" belt for profile and edge work, where the operator presses a pad or the slack belt onto the part as the belt runs.
- Long-bed edge sanders and contour sanders whose manual specifies a 2" x 132" belt, including machines with an oscillating platen and a slack section or small-radius contact wheel for shaped parts.
- Metal edge sanders and stroke sanders in fabrication shops running zirconia or ceramic on plate and tube.
Confirm the length in your manual; long-belt machines usually tolerate a small variance but not a different nominal length, and we can make any 2" wide length to order. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting. Fitting a 132" belt: uncoil it fully and let it relax flat before mounting, hang it over both drums with the arrow pointing the way the belt travels, tension it, and track it slowly by hand before switching on.
How to get the most out of it
- Track it centred and let it run a minute before it touches wood. A long narrow belt needs a moment to settle; watch that it neither creeps toward the drum flange nor hunts back and forth.
- On the platen, keep the work moving along the belt so one zone does not carry all the wear. Use X-weight for anything that must finish flat and square.
- On the slack section or contact wheel, use J-weight or J-flex and let the belt wrap the profile. Light pressure and a moving part; a stationary part dishes the profile.
- Stroke sanding technique: keep the pad moving with the grain, use light pressure, and stay in the 80 to 150 grit range on wood. Pressing hard heats the belt and burns the panel.
- Zirconia and ceramic need pressure. Lean into steel work so the grain fractures and stays sharp; a glazed belt is a belt that was run too lightly.
- Keep dust extraction on and clean loaded belts with a crepe rubber belt eraser held against the running belt at low pressure.
- Store long belts hanging over a large-diameter peg or loosely coiled in their box, never folded. A 132" belt with a crease will thump on every revolution.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between AL/OX X-weight, J-weight and J-flex?
All three carry the same heat-treated aluminum oxide grain; the cloth underneath differs. X-weight is heavy and stiff for flat platen work. J-weight is lighter and bends around gentle curves. Al/OX J-flex is pre-flexed to wrap tight profiles and small contact wheels. Choose by the shape of the part, not the material.
What machine uses a 2" x 132" sanding belt?
Stroke sanders and long-bed edge and contour sanders built for a 2" wide, 132" long belt. The narrow width is used for profiles, rebates and curved edges, and the long loop keeps the abrasive cool. Check the belt size in your manual; if your machine calls for a slightly different 2" length, we make it to order.
Which grit should I use for stroke sanding a panel?
Stay in the 80 to 150 grit range with aluminum oxide. Start at 80 to remove machining marks, move to 120 to clear the 80 scratch, and finish at 150 before hand or orbital sanding. Keep the pad moving with the grain and use light pressure; a stroke sander burns wood when the pad dwells.
Can I run zirconia or ceramic on a wood edge sander?
Zirconia works for heavy stock removal on dense hardwood at 36 to 60 grit if the machine lets you press firmly. Ceramic is best left to steel; on wood at light pressure it glazes and burns. For all finishing grits on wood, and for anything above 120 grit, use one of the aluminum oxide belts.
How should I store 132" belts so they track properly?
Hang them over a large-diameter peg or leave them loosely coiled in the box, away from humidity and sunlight. Never fold a long belt or stand it on edge on concrete; a crease or a damp edge becomes a bump or a stretched side that will not track. Let a cold belt warm to room temperature before running it.
Why does zirconia stop at 120 grit?
Zirconia grain sharpens itself by fracturing under load, and fine particles are too small for that to work. Above 120 grit aluminum oxide produces the same finish for less money, which is why the fine grits in this size are aluminum oxide. If you need a specific grain and grit that is not listed, we can quote a custom belt.

Each pack holds six 2" x 132" belts of one material and grit. We convert any 2" wide length to order in about 3 days in the same grains.
