Long-bed edge sanders and stroke sanders that run a 3" belt need eleven feet of abrasive per loop, and that length is the point: the belt spends most of each revolution cooling, so a 3" x 132" belt runs cooler and lasts longer than a short belt doing the same work. We convert these in Anaheim, California, for both the woodshops that use them on panel edges and the metal shops that run them on plate, tube and blade stock.
Choose Aluminum Oxide X-weight for flat, aggressive work against a platen, Aluminum Oxide J-weight for contours and fine finishing, Zirconia for steel and heavy hardwood removal, and Ceramic for stainless, hardened steel and high-alloy material. Four belts per pack, 40 through 600 grit.

Which 3" x 132" belt should you choose?
Two questions decide it: does the belt need to stay flat or follow a shape, and is the work wood or steel.
- Aluminum Oxide X-weight: heavy, stiff cloth with a strong bond. This is the belt for aggressive stock removal against a platen on hardwoods, MDF, plastics and non-ferrous metals, and for general-purpose edge sanding where the edge must finish square. It is also the sensible aluminum oxide choice on steel when budget matters more than speed.
- Aluminum Oxide J-weight: a lighter, flexible cloth that conforms to curves, radiused edges and moulded profiles on a slack section or soft contact wheel. It is the belt for fine finishing passes and for any job that needs the abrasive to follow the part instead of flattening it.
- Zirconia: a self-sharpening grain for grinding steel, stainless and alloys with a cooler cut and longer life under heavy pressure, and for coarse levelling of dense hardwood. Keep the pressure up; zirconia dulls quickly if it is only allowed to skim. Use aluminum oxide above 120 grit.
- Ceramic: the grain for the hardest work: stainless, tool steel, hardened blade stock and high-alloy plate on a rigid, powered machine. It cuts cool and at a steady rate through its life, but it must be worked hard; at light pressure it glazes and heats the part. Not for wood.
Not every grain is stocked in every grit. The variant selector shows current combinations, and anything not listed can be quoted as a custom belt.

Do not skip more than one grit. A long belt makes belt changes slower, which tempts operators to jump grades; the scratch you leave behind is slower still to remove.
What machines take a 3" x 132" belt?
- Long-bed oscillating edge sanders built for a 3" wide, 132" long belt, used on cabinet doors, panels, drawer fronts and stair parts.

Confirm the length in your manual before ordering; long-belt machines tolerate small variances but not a different nominal length, and we can convert any 3" wide length to order. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting. To fit a 132" belt, uncoil it and let it relax flat, hang it over both drums with any arrow pointing in the direction of travel, tension it, then rotate by hand and adjust tracking before switching on.
How to get the most out of it
- Let a new belt run for a minute and watch the tracking settle before the first part touches it. A long belt that hunts side to side needs the tension or the drum crown checked.
- Use the platen for anything that must be flat and square, with X-weight, and move the work along the belt so wear is spread over the full loop.
- Use the slack section or contact wheel for shapes, with J-weight, keeping the part moving so the profile does not dish.
- Stroke sanding wood: 80 to 150 grit aluminum oxide, pad moving with the grain, light pressure. Dwelling burns the panel.
- Steel and stainless: zirconia or ceramic with firm pressure so the grain fractures and stays sharp. Move the part constantly; dwelling blues stainless. Use a metal-rated collector and never mix steel sparks with wood dust.
- Blade work: set bevels with zirconia or ceramic at 40 to 80 grit, refine with 120 to 220, then aluminum oxide 320 to 600. Dip the blade often and stop if the edge colour changes.
- Clean loaded belts with a crepe rubber belt eraser held against the running belt at low pressure, and keep extraction on.
- Store belts hanging over a large peg or loosely coiled in their box, away from humidity. Never fold a long belt.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy Aluminum Oxide X-weight or J-weight for a 3" x 132" belt?
Buy X-weight for flat edge sanding on the platen, aggressive stock removal and anything that must finish square; it is stiff and tear-resistant. Buy J-weight for curved edges, mouldings and fine finishing on the slack section or a contact wheel, where the belt has to flex around the part. Many shops keep both.
Can I use these 3" x 132" belts for metal as well as wood?
Yes. Aluminum oxide handles aluminum, brass and light steel work. For steel, stainless and alloys use Zirconia in the coarse and medium grits with firm pressure, and Ceramic for hardened, high-alloy and stainless material. Keep metal sparks away from wood dust and use a collector rated for metal grinding.
Which grits do knife makers use on a 3" x 132" belt?
Set bevels with zirconia or ceramic at 40 to 80 grit, refine at 120 to 220, then move to aluminum oxide at 320, 400 and 600 to prepare the blade for hand finishing or polishing. Dip the blade in water constantly and never let the edge change colour; a long belt runs cooler but heat still builds at a thin edge.
What is the difference between a 3" x 132" and a 2" x 132" belt?
Only the width. Both run on long-bed edge sanders and stroke sanders; a 3" belt covers more edge per pass and wears more slowly, while a 2" belt reaches into narrower rebates and tighter profiles. Match the width to what your machine's drums and platen are built for; the two are not interchangeable.
Why do the belts come four to a pack?
A 132" belt is a lot of abrasive, and most shops keep one or two grits on the machine at a time, so four belts of one grit covers a normal production cycle without tying up money in inventory. How do I stop a long belt from tracking off the drum?
Let the belt relax flat before mounting, seat it centred on both drums with any direction arrow pointing the way the belt travels, tension it to the machine specification and turn it by hand while adjusting tracking. Once running, small drift usually means uneven tension or a belt that was stored folded or damp; never run a creased belt.
