A short, 19-inch-wide belt has to survive a lot of joint passes per minute, which is why we build this size on anti-static X-weight poly-cotton cloth that holds up on older, finicky wide belt machines as well as new ones. It is offered in closed-coat aluminum oxide for wood and MDF and in zirconia for hardwood calibrating and steel, in grits from 36 through 400.
Shops buy 19" x 48" for compact wide belt sanders that handle cabinet doors, drawer fronts, cutting boards and small panels. Three belts of one grit come in each pack, so you can stock the grit you change most and add a coarse and a finishing grit alongside it. We convert these in Anaheim, California.

Aluminum oxide or zirconia: which 19" x 48" belt should you buy?
Choose by the material and the pressure your machine can put on the belt, not by price alone.
- Cloth Closed Coat A/O (aluminum oxide): the default for solid wood, plywood, MDF and veneer, and for anything finer than 120 grit. Aluminum oxide cuts cleanly at the light-to-moderate pressure a 19-inch machine applies and leaves a scratch that stains evenly. It is also the right choice for aluminum, brass and composites.
- Zirconia: a self-sharpening grain that fractures under load to expose fresh edges. Buy it for calibrating hardwood at 36 to 60 grit all day, for glue-line removal on dense species, and for mild steel plate or weld knockdown at 36 to 120 grit. Run it with real pressure; used lightly, it dulls like an expensive aluminum oxide. Above 120 grit choose aluminum oxide even where a finer zirconia is listed.
Grit by job, either grain: 36 and 40 for calibrating rough or glued-up stock; 60 for dimensioning; 80 and 100 for surfacing planed stock; 120 and 150 for pre-finish and paint-grade MDF; 180 and 220 for the last pass before stain or clear; 320 and 400 for a skim pass on veneer, oiled and clear-coated work, or a fine finish on aluminum.

What machines take a 19" x 48" belt?
- Compact 19-inch wide belt sanders used in small cabinet shops, school shops and furniture studios. The old page called these "timesaver machines"; the trade uses that name for wide belt sanders in general.
- Older 19-inch machines with worn tracking or tension systems. The X-weight cloth is stiff enough to run flat and track on machines that shred lighter belts.
- 19-inch machines that specify a 60-inch belt take our 19" x 60" belts instead. Length tolerance is about plus or minus 1/4 inch; match your manual.
Mounting: slide the belt on with the grain out, tension it, and set tracking with the oscillation running so the belt swings evenly either side of centre. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed. For any other width or length, we convert custom sizes in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Give zirconia pressure and aluminum oxide restraint. Zirconia needs a real depth of cut to keep fracturing and stay sharp; aluminum oxide cuts best with light passes and a steady feed.
- Keep passes shallow on a short belt. 1/64 to 1/32 inch per pass at 36 to 60 grit on hardwood, less as the grit gets finer. A 48-inch belt returns to the same spot quickly and has little time to cool.
- Keep the feed up. Slow feed is what burns cherry and maple. Speed up before you lower the table.
- Step grits without skipping more than one. 36, 60, 80, 120, 180, 220. Skipping leaves coarse scratches under a surface that looks finished until stain hits it.
- Use dust extraction and the anti-static backing together. The backing keeps dust from clinging to the belt; the collector has to carry it away. Loading is the top cause of short belt life.
- Clean on the machine. A crepe-rubber belt eraser pressed lightly against the running belt pulls resin and dust out of the grain.
- Move work across the belt width so it wears evenly instead of in a track the width of your panels.
- Store spares hanging, off the floor and away from humidity, and let a cold belt warm up before running.

Frequently asked questions
Should I buy aluminum oxide or zirconia for a 19" x 48" belt on wood?
Aluminum oxide for almost all wood. It cuts cleanly at the pressure a 19-inch machine applies and gives an even scratch under stain. Buy zirconia only for the calibrating belt at 36 to 60 grit on dense hardwood, where its self-sharpening grain keeps cutting through glue lines and end grain long after aluminum oxide has rounded over.
Is zirconia worth it above 120 grit?
No. Zirconia self-sharpens only when it is pressed hard enough to fracture, and at 150 grit and finer the pressure is too light for that to happen. Above 120 grit aluminum oxide cuts cleaner, lasts as long and costs less. Use zirconia for 36 to 120 and switch to aluminum oxide for the finishing grits.
What does anti-static backing actually do?
Sanding dust picks up a static charge and clings to the belt and the panel, which is where loading starts. An anti-static backing bleeds that charge off so dust releases to the extractor instead of packing between the grains. It works with a dust collector, not instead of one.
Will a 19" x 48" belt fit a machine that lists 19" x 60"?
No. A 12-inch difference is far outside the quarter inch or so of length that a wide belt sander's tension roller can take up. We stock 19" x 60" belts as a separate listing, and any other length can be converted to order in about 3 days.
Why does my belt glaze and stop cutting?
On aluminum oxide, glazing usually means the belt is loaded with dust; clean it with a crepe eraser and check the extractor. On zirconia, glazing means too little pressure; the grain is not fracturing to expose new edges. Increase depth of cut slightly or switch that grit to aluminum oxide if the job is light.
Which three grits should a small shop keep for this machine?
For cabinet work, 80, 120 and 180 aluminum oxide cover surfacing planed stock through the last pass before stain. Add a 36 or 60 zirconia if you calibrate rough glue-ups, and a 320 aluminum oxide if you finish veneer or clear-coated work. Each pack contains three belts of one grain and grit.
