20-1/2" x 48" Sanding Belt, 4 PACK
20-1/2" x 48" Sanding Belt, 4 PACK
Available in stock (49998)
The 20-1/2 x 48 belt is a machine-specific size: our original page noted it is most commonly bought for the Grizzly W1709 and similar 20-inch class wide belt sanders that sit between a benchtop drum sander and a full industrial machine. These 20-1/2" x 48" belts on X-weight poly-cotton cloth are converted to that exact width, because a 20-inch or 21-inch belt will not track correctly on a drum built for 20-1/2.
Four belts to a pack in one grain and one grit, from 36 through 400, in closed-coat aluminum oxide or zirconia. The heavy anti-static cloth is the same we use on our industrial wide belts, so it stands up to older or lightly built machines. Converted in Anaheim, California.
- Cut to 20-1/2 inches wide: the width the Grizzly W1709 class of sander is built for
- X-weight poly-cotton cloth that tolerates the tracking of smaller and older machines
- Anti-static treatment reduces dust cling and loading with a modest collector
- Closed-coat aluminum oxide, 36–400 grit, for hardwood, plywood, MDF and aluminum
- Zirconia at 36–120 grit for flattening glue-ups and hardwood slabs
- Four belts per pack; converted in Anaheim, California
Aluminum oxide or zirconia for a 20-inch class sander?
Both grains are offered from 36 to 400. Match the grain to the pass, not the machine.
- Cloth Closed Coat A/O: aluminum oxide with the cloth fully covered in grain. It cuts cleanly at the moderate pressure a 20-inch machine's motor delivers and leaves the even scratch that stain and finish need on hardwood, plywood, MDF and veneer. It is also the grain for aluminum, brass and plastics, and the only grain we suggest above 120 grit. Closed coat carries more grain than open coat and lasts longer on hardwood; open coat only earns its place on very soft, pitchy softwood.
- Zirconia: for the heavy first pass at 36, 40, 60 or 80 grit on glued-up panels, end-grain boards and hardwood slabs. The grain fractures under load and keeps a fresh edge, so it holds its cut rate where aluminum oxide slows down. It needs a real depth of cut to self-sharpen; on a light skim it glazes. Use it to flatten, then switch to aluminum oxide to surface and finish.
For metal, closed coat is always the answer: aluminum oxide on aluminum with a grease stick, zirconia on mild steel, and a metal-rated collector either way.
Grit guide for panels, doors and boards
| Grit | Use it for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 36–40 | Flattening rough glue-ups and slabs | Zirconia; 1/64" passes |
| 60 | Levelling joints, removing planer snipe | Zirconia or AO |
| 80–100 | General surfacing after flattening | AO; removes the 60 scratch |
| 120–150 | Pre-finish on hardwood, plywood, MDF | AO; light passes |
| 180–220 | Final pass before stain or clear coat | Stop at 220 for stain |
| 320–400 | Sealer flatting, fine work on aluminum | Skim only |
Step no more than one grade at a time. A four-pack each of 80, 120 and 180 covers most door and panel work; add 60 zirconia for glue-ups.
What machines take a 20-1/2" x 48" belt?
- Grizzly W1709: the machine this size is most commonly ordered for, as noted on our original listing. Confirm against your manual before ordering.
- Other 20-inch class wide belt sanders whose plate reads 20-1/2" x 48".
- Small Timesaver-type finish sanders and other automatic sanders built around this belt size.
Width is the critical number here. We also stock 19", 21" and 25" x 48" belts for other machines, and half an inch of width difference is enough to miss a tracking sensor or overhang a drum edge. Length tolerance is usually about a quarter inch. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting. If your plate reads something else, we convert custom belts to the exact size in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Track empty and re-check warm. A 48-inch loop responds quickly to tracking adjustments; let it centre before feeding stock and look again after a few minutes of running.
- Take light passes. A 20-inch class machine has a modest motor; 1/64" per pass at 36–60 grit and a skim at 120 and finer keeps it from bogging and keeps the belt cool.
- Keep the conveyor moving. Stopping a board under the drum burns maple and cherry immediately.
- Spread the wear. Feed narrow parts down different tracks across the belt so it does not groove in one spot.
- Extract and clean. Run the collector at full airflow and clean aluminum oxide belts with a crepe rubber eraser at light pressure when the surface starts to shine.
- Store belts hanging, dry and out of sunlight, and warm a cold belt to shop temperature before mounting.
If belts are tearing or the joint is letting go, read our guide to why sanding belts break. For ripple and washboard marks, see the woodworking chatter Q&A.
Use it for / don't use it for
Use it for
- Cabinet doors, drawer fronts and small panels on a 20-inch class sander
- Flattening cutting boards and glued-up hardwood
- Plywood, MDF and veneered parts before paint or stain
- Aluminum, brass and plastics with aluminum oxide; mild steel with zirconia
Don't use it for
- Machines plated for 20" or 21" wide belts; half an inch matters
- Zirconia above 120 grit where the finish matters
- Deep passes that stall the motor; take more passes instead
- Wet sanding, or one collector for both wood and steel dust

Frequently asked questions
Does a 20-1/2" x 48" belt fit the Grizzly W1709?
The Grizzly W1709 is the machine this size is most often ordered for, according to our original listing and customer orders. Confirm the belt size in your manual or on the machine plate before ordering, since belt sizes vary between 20-inch class models. If your plate lists a different width or length, we convert custom belts to match.
Can I use a 20" or 21" x 48" belt instead?
Not reliably. On a wide belt sander the belt has to cover the drum and pass the tracking sensors at both edges, and half an inch of width is enough to miss one or overhang the drum. We stock 20-1/2", 21" and other widths in 48-inch length as separate listings; order the width on your machine plate.
Which grit should I start with on a planed cabinet door?
Start at 80 grit closed-coat aluminum oxide if the door is flat and planed, or 60 grit if joints are slightly proud. Follow with 120 and finish at 150 to 180 before stain. Save 36 and 40 grit zirconia for rough glue-ups where you need to remove real thickness.
Is zirconia worth it on a 20-inch class machine?
Yes for flattening, at 36 to 80 grit, provided you set a real depth of cut so the grain fractures and stays sharp. It removes stock faster and lasts longer than aluminum oxide on glued-up hardwood and end grain. For surfacing and finishing at 100 grit and above, closed-coat aluminum oxide cuts cleaner and costs less.
Why does the belt keep tracking off on my machine?
Check the belt first: a cold, folded or stretched belt will hunt. Then check the machine: worn tracking rollers, a dirty or misaligned sensor, and uneven tension are the usual causes on smaller sanders. Our X-weight cloth tolerates some hunting, but no belt will track on a machine with a failed sensor.
How many belts come in a pack and can I mix grits?
Each pack holds four 20-1/2" x 48" belts of one grain and one grit, so order one pack per grit in your progression. Orders over $200 ship free, unused belts in original packaging can be returned within 30 days, and case pricing is available by calling 714-646-3299 or emailing sales@maverickabrasives.com.
