Moving from a 6" to an 8" flap wheel buys longer flaps, and longer flaps mean more abrasive per wheel, a cooler cut and a more forgiving touch on the part. This 8" x 1" wheel is the step up for shops that run an 8" bench grinder or a polishing lathe all day and are tired of changing 6" wheels, while the 1" face keeps it controllable on hand-held parts.

Which arbor hole and grit should you choose for an 8" machine?
Measure the shaft first. An 8" wheel carries more mass than a 6", so a sloppy fit shows up immediately as vibration.
- 5/8" Arbor Hole: the common shaft on 8" bench grinders. Choose this to replace a stone on a grinder.
- 1" Arbor Hole: polishing lathes and buffing motors with 1" shafts, and the heavier pedestal grinders. This is the hole most polishing shops order.
- 1-3/4" Arbor Hole: flap wheel finishing machines and industrial spindles with 1-3/4" arbors and large flanges.
Grit follows the finish you are chasing, and on an 8" wheel each grit runs a little softer than the same grit on a 6" because the longer flaps flex more:
- 40 and 60 grit: mill scale, rust and casting skin on bar, pipe and plate; first pass on heavy weld toes.
- 80 and 100 grit: deburring and blending machined and cut parts, removing grinder marks before paint or powder coat.
- 120 and 150 grit: brushed finish on mild steel and aluminum, the standard pre-plate surface, and finishing turned wood.
- 320 and 400 grit: fine satin on stainless and brass and the last abrasive step before a buff and compound. There is no 180 or 240 in this size; 150 to 320 is the intended step, taken with light pressure.

What machines does an 8" x 1" unmounted flap wheel fit?
- 8" bench grinders, in place of one stone, usually with the 5/8" hole. Make sure the guard accepts a full 8" wheel and that the grinder's RPM is at or below the rating marked on the wheel.
- Polishing lathes and buffing motors with 1" or 5/8" shafts. An 8" flap wheel next to an 8" buff is a standard two-station setup: satin on one end, colour on the other.
- Flap wheel finishing machines and industrial spindles with 1-3/4" arbors.
- Pedestal grinders with a 5/8" or 1" shaft.
Flange and arbor fit. Clamp the wheel between two equal flanges that bear on the hub; the flanges from an 8" stone are suitable. On a polishing lathe with a tapered spindle, use a straight arbor adapter with a shoulder and nut rather than screwing the wheel onto the taper. Seat the wheel square, tighten firmly, and mount it so the flap tips trail the direction of rotation at the work point.
Speed. A bigger wheel must turn slower. The flap tips on an 8" wheel travel a third farther per revolution than on a 6", so the 8" carries a lower RPM rating. Check the figure printed on the wheel against your machine before mounting; a grinder that is fine with a 6" flap wheel may be too fast for an 8".
How to get the most out of it
- Confirm the RPM match. Read the rating on the wheel and the plate on the machine. If the machine is faster, do not mount the wheel.
- Mount with the flaps trailing. Viewed at the work point, the flap tips must sweep away from the part. Reversed, the tips catch, the wheel hammers and flaps tear.
- Use the extra flap length. Bring the part in until the flaps just bend and let them wipe the surface. The 8" wheel is more forgiving than a 6"; you should feel it cushion.
- Slightly below center on a grinder. Keep the part on the rest, just under the spindle line, so the wheel pushes the work down rather than lifting it.
- Traverse across the 1" face so it wears flat, and run tube and bar lengthwise for a straight scratch.
- Same direction on the final grit. For a satin that reads as one grain, make every 320 or 400 pass in the same direction and do not go back over it at an angle.
- Clear loading with air. Aluminum, brass and painted parts pack the flaps. Blow the wheel out; do not press harder.
- Keep coarse and fine wheels on separate spindles if you can. On a two-end lathe, run 80 on one side and 320 on the other and move parts straight across.

Frequently asked questions
What does an 8" flap wheel do that a 6" does not?
An 8" wheel has longer flaps, so it carries more abrasive, lasts longer between changes, runs cooler and feels softer on the part. It also has a larger contact patch on flat work. The trade-off is a lower RPM rating and a bigger guard requirement, so it belongs on 8" grinders, polishing lathes and finishing machines rather than small 6" grinders.
Will an 8" x 1" flap wheel fit my 8" bench grinder?
If the grinder has a 5/8" shaft, order the 5/8" arbor hole and mount the wheel between the stone's flanges with the flaps trailing. Before you do, compare the grinder's RPM with the rating printed on the wheel; an 8" flap wheel is rated lower than a 6", and not every 8" grinder is slow enough. If the grinder is faster than the wheel rating, do not use it.
Which arbor hole do I need for a polishing lathe?
Most polishing lathes and buffing motors carry a 1" or 5/8" straight shaft, or a tapered spindle that takes an adapter. Order the hole that matches the straight shaft or the adapter arbor, not the taper itself. The 1-3/4" hole is for flap wheel finishing machines and industrial spindles built around that arbor size.
How do I get a uniform satin on stainless before buffing?
Blend any weld or scratch at 80 or 100 grit, refine at 150, then finish at 320 or 400 with light pressure and every pass in the same direction. Keep the part moving and let the long flaps wipe the surface rather than pressing in, which heat-tints stainless. Go straight to the buff and compound from 400 for a bright finish.
Should I choose the 8" x 1" or the 8" x 2"?
Choose the 1" face for hand-held parts, tube, edges and anything you need to steer; it is lighter and easier to control. Choose the 2" face for flat sheet, wide panels and production runs where coverage per pass matters more than agility. Both take the same three arbor holes and the same grit range.
Can I use this wheel on wood or plastic?
Yes. Aluminum oxide is the standard grain for wood, and the long flaps on an 8" wheel are gentle on turned and shaped hardwood parts at 120 or 150 grit. On plastics and composites use light pressure and keep the part moving so the flaps do not melt or burnish the surface, and blow the dust out often.
