A 12" flap wheel has the longest flaps we make, and the 1" face concentrates all of that cloth on a narrow band. The result is a blending wheel that wraps round tube, rail and pipe, follows the contour of a weldment, and keeps cutting for a very long time between changes, on a spindle that turns slowly enough to run it. It is a single-grit tool: 80 grit, the grit fabrication shops use to take weld toes, grinder marks and scale to a clean, paintable surface.

Which arbor hole should you choose, and why only 80 grit?
The 12" x 1" is stocked in one grit because it does one job. 80 grit is the point where a flap wheel removes the toe of a MIG or TIG weld, takes out coarse grinder and flap disc scratches, cleans scale and handling marks, and leaves a surface that primer, powder coat or a finer flap wheel can go straight onto. Coarser than 80 on flaps this long tends to gouge; finer than 80 is a finishing job, and for that we carry 100 through 400 on the 12" x 2" and the 8" wheels.
Arbor hole, measured at the shaft or arbor where the wheel sits:
- 5/8" Arbor Hole: pedestal spindles and slow-speed grinders with a 5/8" shaft, only where the guard and RPM are made for a 12" wheel.
- 1" Arbor Hole: large polishing lathes and buffing motors with 1" shafts; the usual choice for rail and tube shops.
- 1-3/4" Arbor Hole: flap wheel finishing machines and backstand spindles built around a 1-3/4" arbor with wide flanges.
Because a 12" x 1" wheel is tall and narrow, flange support matters more than on any other size. Use flanges of equal diameter that cover the hub fully; small washers let the wheel lean and the flaps run out of square.

What machines does a 12" x 1" unmounted flap wheel fit?
- Large polishing lathes and buffing motors with a 1" or 5/8" shaft that run at or below the RPM marked on the wheel. Rail shops often pair a 12" flap wheel with a 12" buff on the same lathe.
- Backstand and pedestal finishing spindles with a matching arbor and full-size flanges.
- Flap wheel finishing machines with 1-3/4" arbors.
Speed is the first check. Bigger wheels must turn slower: the flap tips on a 12" wheel travel twice as far per revolution as on a 6", so the 12" carries the lowest RPM rating in our range. Standard bench grinders are far too fast and their guards will not take a 12" wheel. Compare the RPM printed on the wheel with the machine plate before mounting, and if the machine is faster, do not use it.
Mounting. Seat the wheel square between the flanges, tighten firmly, and mount it so the flap tips trail the direction of rotation at the point where the work touches. Spin it unloaded before use; a 12" wheel that is not square or not tight shows vibration immediately.
How to get the most out of it
- Match RPM before mounting. Wheel rating versus machine plate, every time. This is the slowest-rated wheel we sell.
- Mount with the flaps trailing between full-size flanges and confirm it runs smooth unloaded.
- Let the long flaps wrap the work. Bring a tube or rail in until the flaps just bend around the curve. Twelve-inch flaps conform to round and formed sections better than any smaller wheel; pressure only folds them.
- Run tube and rail lengthwise. Lay the section along the 1" face and rotate it slowly so the 80 grit scratch runs down the length, then a finer wheel or paint hides it. Crossing the tube leaves witness marks.
- Blend along the weld, not across it. Travel along the bead with the wheel bridging weld and parent metal so the toe feathers out.
- Keep it moving. Dwelling puts heat into thin tube and grooves the wheel face.
- Clear loading with air. Aluminum rail and coated tube pack the flaps quickly; blow the wheel out rather than pressing.
- Store spare wheels on the hub or in the box. Long flaps take a set if a wheel is left standing on its face.

Frequently asked questions
Why is the 12" x 1" flap wheel only available in 80 grit?
Because 80 grit is what this wheel is bought for: blending weld toes and grinder scratch on tube, rail and weldments to a paint-ready surface. The long flaps make 80 gentle enough to leave a clean finish while still removing the weld toe. For finer grits in a 12" wheel, the 12" x 2" is stocked from 40 through 400; for other grits in this width, contact us about a special order.
What machine can actually run a 12" flap wheel?
A large polishing lathe, buffing motor, backstand or flap wheel finishing machine whose speed is at or below the RPM printed on the wheel. A 12" wheel carries the lowest rating in our range because its flap tips travel twice as far per revolution as a 6" wheel's. Bench grinders are too fast and their guards are too small; do not use one.
Which arbor hole should I order for a polishing lathe?
Measure the shaft where the wheel will sit. Large polishing lathes and buffing motors are usually 1", flap wheel and backstand finishing machines are usually 1-3/4", and some pedestal spindles are 5/8". The hole must match exactly, and a tall narrow wheel like the 12" x 1" also needs full-diameter flanges on both sides so it cannot lean.
How do I blend a weld on stainless handrail without heat-tinting it?
Run the rail lengthwise along the 1" face with just enough pressure to make the long flaps wrap the tube, travel along the weld rather than across it, and keep the rail moving so no spot dwells. The 80 grit wheel feathers the weld toe into the parent metal; follow it with a 120 or 180 grit wheel for a brushed architectural finish and the stainless stays bright.
Should I buy the 12" x 1" or the 12" x 2"?
Buy the 12" x 1" for tube, rail, pipe and weld toes, where a narrow face wraps the section and concentrates the cut, and when 80 grit is the only grit you need. Buy the 12" x 2" for sheet, panels, tank shells and wide flat bar, or when you want a full grit progression from 40 to 400 on one machine.
Is a 12" wheel more economical than an 8" for a production rail shop?
Usually yes, if the machine can run it. The 12" wheel carries much more cloth, so it runs cooler, wraps tube better and lasts far longer between changes, which matters more than the price per wheel on a busy line. The 8" wheel is the right choice where the machine is faster than a 12" wheel allows or where a smaller guard is fitted.
