The smallest wheel in our mounted line is for the places nothing else reaches: keyways, small bores, threads you need to chase clean, the root of a fillet weld on a bracket, and the inside of tubing around 1" ID. Aluminum oxide cloth flaps on a 1/4" steel shank give a die grinder or rotary tool a conforming abrasive face only 1/2" wide, so you can deburr and blend a narrow feature without touching the surfaces beside it.
We sell them as a pack of 10 in 40 through 320 grit, with a choice of plain 1/4" shank for collets and chucks or 1/4-20 threaded shank for threaded mandrels. Toolmakers, mold polishers, gunsmiths and fabricators doing tight-clearance deburring are the people who reorder this size.

Plain shank or 1/4-20 threaded shank: which should you order?
Both mount the same 1" x 1/2" aluminum oxide wheel; the difference is how it attaches to the tool.
- Plain Shank: a straight 1/4" steel shank. Choose it for a die grinder with a 1/4" collet, a rotary tool with a 1/4" collet, a drill chuck or a flex shaft handpiece. This is the right answer for most buyers.
- 1/4-20 Thread Shank: a 1/4-20 threaded stud instead of a straight shank. Choose it if your tool, extension arbor or mandrel has a matching 1/4-20 threaded hole; wheels can then be swapped without loosening a collet. Do not chuck a threaded stud in a collet as a substitute for a plain shank.
Grit choice on a wheel this small is about the burr, not the material. Every grit from 40 to 320 is offered in both shank styles, so buy a coarse and a fine pair for each job rather than trying to make one grit do everything.

Step no more than one band at a time. A 60 grit burr removal followed straight by 320 leaves 60 grit scratches under a satin sheen.
What tools does a 1" x 1/2" mounted flap wheel fit?
- Pneumatic and electric die grinders with a 1/4" collet, straight or right-angle. This is where a 1" wheel is happiest because the tool is light and easy to steer inside a part.
- Rotary tools fitted with a 1/4" collet. Standard 1/8" collets will not hold this shank.
- Flex shaft handpieces with a 1/4" collet or chuck, common on polishing and mold benches.
- Electric and cordless drills. Workable, but a drill runs slower than a die grinder, so a 1" wheel cuts gently; step down a grit if you need more bite.
- Threaded mandrels and extension arbors with a 1/4-20 hole, using the threaded shank version.
Seat the shank fully in the collet with only enough overhang to reach the work; a long stick-out on a small wheel invites chatter. Run within the RPM marked on the wheel or your tool's rating, whichever is lower.
How to get the most out of it
- Let the flaps flex. A flap wheel cuts with the tips of flexing cloth flaps. Press hard and the flaps stand up, stop cutting and tear. Light contact, steady movement.
- Keep the flaps trailing. Present the wheel so the edge of the flaps drags across the work rather than digging in. If the wheel grabs or chatters, flip your approach angle.
- Use the face, not the corner. Inside a bore, keep the 1/2" face flat to the wall and move the tool in and out. Riding on the corner of the wheel wears one edge and cuts a groove.
- Mind the speed. A small wheel tolerates higher RPM than a large one, but stay within the marked rating of the wheel and the tool. Excess speed shreds flaps and glazes aluminum oxide.
- Run dry. These are dry-use cloth wheels. Blow chips out of the flaps with air rather than dunking the wheel.
- Finish in sequence. Coarse to break the burr, medium to blend, fine for the final scratch. Change wheels; do not try to press harder with a worn one.

Frequently asked questions
Will a 1" x 1/2" flap wheel fit a standard rotary tool?
Only if the rotary tool has a 1/4" collet or chuck. The 1" x 1/2" wheel is mounted on a 1/4" steel shank, which is the die grinder standard; the 1/8" collet supplied with many hobby rotary tools will not hold it. Most rotary tool makers sell a 1/4" collet or keyless chuck as an accessory.
What is the 1/4-20 thread shank for?
The 1/4-20 thread shank version has a threaded stud in place of the straight shank. It screws into a mandrel, extension arbor or tool spindle with a 1/4-20 tapped hole, which lets you change wheels without opening a collet. If your tool uses a collet or a drill chuck, order the plain shank instead.
Which grit should I start with for deburring a drilled hole in steel?
Start at 80 grit for a typical drilled or machined burr in steel or stainless. Use 40 or 60 only for heavy burrs or casting flash, then move to 120 or 180 to blend the edge. If the part will be plated or must look finished, end at 240 or 320 for a uniform satin edge.
How much pressure should I use with a 1" flap wheel?
Very little. The 1" x 1/2" wheel cuts with the tips of flexing aluminum oxide flaps, and pressing hard stands the flaps up so they rub instead of cut, then tears them off. Keep the wheel moving with light contact and let speed and grit do the work. If it will not cut, step down a grit rather than pushing.
Can I use it inside tubing?
Yes, that is one of its main jobs. A 1" diameter wheel with a 1/2" face will work inside fittings and tubing around 1" inside diameter and slightly larger, cleaning weld color, scale or burrs. Keep the face flat to the wall and stroke in and out so you do not cut a ring in one spot.
How fast should I run it?
Run within the RPM marked on the wheel or your tool's rated speed, whichever is lower. Smaller wheels tolerate higher speed than larger ones, but a die grinder run flat out on a worn wheel throws flaps. On a drill the speed is lower and the cut gentler, which suits fine grits and satin finishing.
