Small fabrication shops, knife makers and prototype departments do not need a 37-inch machine to put a proper satin finish on parts; they need the right belt on the compact machine they already have. These 9" x 48" surface conditioning belts bring the same non-woven finishing web used on industrial graining lines down to 9-inch wide belt sanders and 9-inch edge sanders, for deburring, cleaning and brushed finishes on stainless, aluminum, steel and titanium parts that fit across a 9-inch belt.
The web is aluminum oxide grain in a nylon fibre matrix on a reinforced scrim backing. Four grades are stocked, Coarse, Medium, Very Fine and Ultra Fine, each sold as a single belt; note that the grit equivalents for this size run finer than our wider belts, and the grade guide below is specific to it.

Which grade should you choose for small-part finishing?
The four grades share the same web and backing; the grain size changes. On this size the Medium and Very Fine grades sit finer than on our wider belts, which suits the fine, close-up work small parts usually get.
- Coarse (60-80 Grit), brown: cleaning and deburring. It removes light rust, oxidation, heat tint and mill haze, rolls the burr on laser-cut and sheared blanks and lays an open brushed grain on aluminum. It removes measurable material if you lean on it, so keep pressure light.
- Medium (150-180 Grit), maroon: the general satin grade for this size. Behind a 120–150 grit coated belt it blends the scratch and leaves a clean directional satin on stainless brackets, knife bolsters, aluminum housings and small panels.
- Very Fine (220-280 Grit), blue: the fine brushed finish. Behind a 180–220 grit coated belt it gives stainless and aluminum parts a #4-style grain with low contrast, the finish most small stainless fabrications and knife fittings are shipped with.
- Ultra Fine (320-400 Grit), grey: pre-buff and fine satin. Run after Very Fine on parts headed for buffing or anodizing, or where a near-smooth matte is specified. It refines an existing finish; it does not remove scratches.
A small shop that finishes mixed stainless and aluminum parts is well served by a Medium and a Very Fine belt, with Coarse for cleanup and Ultra Fine for pre-polish.

Keep the coated grit within one step of the non-woven grade. A part that comes off a 60 grit coated belt needs 120 and 180 or 220 coated passes before the Very Fine belt will give a clean finish.
Which machines take a 9" x 48" surface conditioning belt?
- Compact 9-inch wide belt sanders and small drum-and-platen finishing machines specified for a 9" x 48" belt, the smallest of the automated graining machines this belt family is built for.
- 9-inch edge sanders and small stroke-style sanders that run a 48-inch belt, used hand-fed for deburring and satin finishing of small parts.
Match width and length to your manual; length tolerance on most machines is about a quarter inch. The belt has no direction arrow and mounts either way. Tension to the maker's setting, centre the tracking with the machine jogged, and set platen or drum pressure lighter than for a coated belt of the same size. On a hand-fed edge sander, let the part float against the platen rather than forcing it. Metal swarf goes to a metal-rated or wet collector, never a wood-dust system. How to get the most out of it
- Set the scratch with a coated belt first. 120–150 grit before Medium, 180–220 grit before Very Fine and Ultra Fine. Non-woven web refines the previous scratch; it does not erase a coarse one.
- Light pressure. The web does the work. On a hand-fed machine that means resting the part against the belt, not pushing; on an automated head it means the lightest setting that gives a continuous grain line.
- Keep the part moving in one direction. Feed or stroke parallel to belt travel, always the same way, so the grain reads straight. Never rotate a part between passes on a directional finish.
- Work the whole belt width. Small parts wear a groove in the centre of a 9-inch belt if they always run in the same place. Move across the width so the web wears evenly.
- Use a light lubricant on aluminum. A mist or a grease stick swipe stops aluminum smearing into the web. Stainless and steel run dry; dip small stainless parts in water between passes if they get warm.
- No belt eraser. Crepe rubber pulls web fibres. The belt sheds swarf on its own with good extraction.
- Hang it to store. A folded non-woven belt creases and prints a line on the next part.

What grit does each grade equal on this belt?
On the 9" x 48" belt, Coarse is roughly a 60–80 grit finish, Medium 150–180, Very Fine 220–280 and Ultra Fine 320–400. These are finish equivalents rather than grit sizes; a non-woven belt removes far less material than a coated belt of the same number, so choose by the finish you want rather than by the grit you are used to.
Can I use this belt hand-fed on an edge sander?
Yes. Rest the part against the platen with light pressure, keep it moving parallel to the belt and work across the full width so the web wears evenly. Non-woven web conforms slightly, which makes it forgiving on small parts, but pushing hard tears fibres out and heats the part. Dip stainless parts in water if they warm up.
Which grade gives a brushed finish on small stainless parts?
Very Fine (220-280 Grit) after a 180 or 220 grit coated belt gives the fine #4-style brush most small stainless fabrications and knife fittings are finished to. Medium (150-180 Grit) gives a slightly bolder satin and is the better choice behind a 120 or 150 grit coated belt.
Do you sell the same size in a coated belt?
Yes. Our 9" x 48" sanding belts in aluminum oxide and zirconia are sold as a 4 pack and are the belts to set the scratch before the non-woven pass. Take parts to 120–150 grit for Medium and 180–220 grit for Very Fine or Ultra Fine, then switch to the surface conditioning belt.
