A 9-inch by 48-inch belt is the crossover size: woodworkers run it on small wide belt and edge sanders, and fabricators run the same size on 9-inch belt grinders for edge sanding, bevel grinding and surface grinding steel. That is why we stock it in two grains, aluminum oxide for wood, aluminum and general work and zirconia for steel, stainless and heavy stock removal, both on poly-cotton cloth.
Grits run from 36 through 400, four belts of one grain and grit per pack. Our rule for choosing is simple: if the belt will spend its life on wood, buy aluminum oxide about 95 percent of the time; if it will spend its life on steel, buy zirconia in the coarse grits and aluminum oxide for finishing. Aluminum oxide or zirconia: which 9" x 48" belt is right for you?
- Aluminum Oxide: choose it for wood, plywood, MDF, plastics, aluminum, brass and composites, and for every grit finer than 120 on any material. It cuts cleanly at the light pressure of an edge sander or small wide belt machine, and its scratch takes stain evenly. On wood, zirconia is often too aggressive; it can tear fibres and leave burn marks where aluminum oxide would not. Aluminum oxide is also the budget choice for a metalworker who wants the least expensive belt and does not mind changing it more often.
- Zirconia: choose it for mild steel, stainless steel, weld knockdown, bevel grinding and heavy stock removal at 36 through 120 grit. The grain fractures under pressure to expose fresh edges, so it keeps cutting long after aluminum oxide has rounded over on steel. It works on aluminum too, but aluminum loads any belt quickly; rub a grease stick on the running belt to keep it cutting. Zirconia needs real pressure; on a light-duty machine or above 120 grit, aluminum oxide is the better buy.
An older version of this page also described silicon carbide belts in this size. Silicon carbide is not stocked in 9" x 48"; if you want its finer scratch pattern for a 220 or 320 finishing pass, ask about a custom run.

What machines take a 9" x 48" belt?
- Small 9-inch wide belt sanders and panel sanders for boards and panels up to 9 inches wide.
- Oscillating edge sanders built for a 9-inch-wide, 48-inch belt.
- 9-inch belt grinders used in fabrication shops for edge, bevel and surface grinding of plate and bar.
- Other 9-inch machines that take a 60-inch belt use our 9" x 60" belts; long edge sanders in the Grizzly G9985 class use our 9" x 138-3/4" belts. Length tolerance is about plus or minus 1/4 inch, so match the manual.
Mounting: slide the belt on with the grain out, tension it, and set tracking with the machine running so the belt rides centred. Check inside the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed. For a size not shown on the site, we convert custom belts in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Match pressure to grain. Aluminum oxide wants light, steady contact and a moving workpiece. Zirconia wants enough pressure to fracture; run it light on steel and it glazes and blues the part.
- On wood, keep the work moving and passes shallow. 1/64 inch per pass at 36 to 60 grit on a small wide belt machine; on an edge sander never park the part on the platen.
- On steel, keep the belt cool. Do not dwell in one spot, let the part cool between passes, and change the belt when it stops cutting rather than pressing harder.
- On aluminum, use a grease stick. A wax lubricant bar rubbed on the running belt stops aluminum from packing into the grain; reapply when the belt starts to squeal or load.
- Step grits without skipping more than one. 36, 60, 80, 120, 180, 220. Coarse scratches hide under finer ones until the stain or polish reveals them.
- Clean loaded belts. A crepe-rubber belt eraser held lightly against the running belt pulls out wood dust and resin. Aluminum oxide belts that look worn are usually loaded.
- Run dust extraction on wood and keep sparks away from the collector on metal; do not grind steel and sand wood on the same machine without clearing the dust first.
- Store spares hanging, off the floor and out of the sun, and let a cold belt warm up before running.

Frequently asked questions
I sand wood. Should I ever buy the zirconia 9" x 48"?
Rarely. Aluminum oxide is the right choice for wood about 95 percent of the time on this size, because the light pressure of an edge sander or small wide belt machine does not let zirconia self-sharpen; it tears fibres and burns instead. The exception is a calibrating belt at 36 or 40 grit for flattening dense hardwood glue-ups.
I grind steel. Which grits should be zirconia and which aluminum oxide?
Zirconia at 36, 40, 60, 80, 100 and 120 for weld knockdown, bevels and stock removal, where its fracturing grain stays sharp under pressure. Aluminum oxide at 150 and finer for blending and finishing, where pressure is too light for zirconia to work. Aluminum oxide in the coarse grits is a cheaper option if you accept changing belts more often.
Do you still sell silicon carbide in 9" x 48"?
Not as a stocked item; this listing is aluminum oxide and zirconia. Silicon carbide gives a narrower scratch and a finer-looking finish at 220 or 320 but wears faster. Can I use these belts on aluminum without loading?
Yes, if you lubricate. Aluminum smears into any dry belt. Rub a grease stick on the running belt before you start and again when the belt begins to squeal or the cut slows. Aluminum oxide at 80 to 220 is the usual choice; zirconia works for heavy removal on thick aluminum with the same lubrication.
What is the 400 grit belt for?
A fine finishing pass. On wood it is a skim over veneer or pieces that will be oiled or clear-coated, never under stain. On steel and stainless it is the last belt before buffing or a satin finish. On aluminum and brass it leaves a near-polished surface. Use it with light pressure and no dwell; it is not a stock-removal belt.
How many belts are in the pack and can I mix grains?
Each pack holds four 9" x 48" belts of one grain and one grit. Buy one pack per grit and grain you need; a mixed shop typically keeps 60 zirconia for steel and 80, 120 and 180 aluminum oxide for wood. Orders over $200 ship free, and unused belts in original packaging can be returned within 30 days.
