Furniture, door and architectural panel shops run the longer stroke sanders that take a 6" x 335" belt, because a longer table means a full-size door or conference top gets sanded in one pass without repositioning. This is a stroke sanding cloth belt for wood, metal or plastic, and we stock it in Aluminum Oxide for solid wood and veneer, Zirconia for steel and aluminum, and Silicon Carbide for plastics, laminates, solid surface and non-ferrous metal.
All three are poly-cotton cloth belts that can be run wet or dry. Converted in Anaheim, California, two to a pack, 36 through 400 grit. Zirconia is held in the coarse grits; the fine grits are aluminum oxide and silicon carbide.

Which 6" x 335" belt should you choose?
Match the grain to the material under the pad. On a machine this long a wrong choice wastes a lot of cloth.
- Aluminum Oxide: the belt for solid wood, veneer, plywood and MDF, and the one we recommend to woodworkers almost every time. It cuts cleanly at pad pressure, leaves the most uniform scratch before stain or lacquer and lasts longest on wood. It also works on aluminum, steel and composites when budget matters more than speed. Poly-cotton cloth, wet or dry, in every grit from 36 to 400.
- Zirconia: heavy stock removal and long life on steel, stainless and aluminum. It self-sharpens under moderate-to-heavy pressure, which is more than wood wants, so on wood it tears the grain and burns. Held in the coarse grits, 36 through 120; other coarse zirconia grits can be converted to order.
- Silicon Carbide: the sharpest grain, for plastics, acrylic, laminates, solid surface, fiberglass, stone and non-ferrous metals, and for fine sanding between coats of lacquer or paint where you want the cleanest scratch. It wears fast on steel.
A door shop typically keeps aluminum oxide 100, 150 and 180 on the machine; a metal shop keeps zirconia 60 and 120 with aluminum oxide 220 for graining.

What machines take a 6" x 335" belt?
We have not verified individual models against the 6" x 335" size. Stroke sander belt length is fixed by drum spacing, so confirm the length in your manual or measure the old belt before ordering.
- Long-table horizontal stroke sanders with a 6" belt, used for doors, conference tops, architectural panels and casework.
- Metal stroke sanders and long-bed finishing machines that specify a 6" x 335" belt.

Mounting: back off the tension, carry the belt coiled, slide it over both drums grain side out, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way, re-tension, then turn the belt by hand and set tracking centered. Re-check tracking after the first minute under load. Other 6" lengths are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the pad flat and moving. The belt cuts only where the pad presses; a tilted or parked pad digs a line or a dish that shows up under finish.
- Respect veneer. Face veneer is thin. Start at 120, use the lightest pad pressure that still cuts, and watch the color change that tells you the glue line is near.
- Sand with the grain in long overlapping strokes along the door or panel, then finish with a pass along the rails and stiles separately so cross-grain scratches do not show.
- Step grits without skipping. 80, 120, 150 or 180 for stain; add 220 only for clear coat.
- Let zirconia work. On steel, lean on the pad so the grain fractures and keep the part moving so it does not blue.
- Use silicon carbide for between-coat sanding at 320 or 400 with a very light pad; it leaves the cleanest scratch under the next coat.
- Keep extraction strong and clean the belt with a crepe rubber belt eraser when finish or resin loads it.
- Store belts hanging in their coil away from humidity, and let a cold belt warm to room temperature before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
What grit should I use on veneered doors with a 6" x 335" belt?
Start at 120 with aluminum oxide and never coarser; face veneer is thin and a coarse belt reaches the glue line in a pass or two. Finish at 150 or 180 before stain, using the lightest pad pressure that still cuts, and keep the pad moving with the grain in long overlapping strokes.
Why is aluminum oxide the right grain for a woodworking stroke sander?
Because a stroke sander applies light pressure through a hand pad, and aluminum oxide cuts cleanly at that pressure while leaving the most even scratch before stain or lacquer. Zirconia needs heavy pressure to self-sharpen and at that pressure tears wood grain and burns, which is why we recommend aluminum oxide for wood almost every time.
Can I sand between coats of lacquer with these belts?
Yes. Use the silicon carbide belt at 320 or 400 with a very light pad and keep it moving; silicon carbide leaves the cleanest scratch for the next coat to bond to and resists loading better than aluminum oxide on finish. Clean the belt with a crepe belt eraser as soon as it starts to load.
Which 6" x 335" belt should a metal shop buy?
Zirconia in the coarse grits for steel, stainless and aluminum plate; it removes stock quickly and lasts under heavy pad pressure. Follow with aluminum oxide at 180 to 220 for a directional grain. Silicon carbide suits aluminum and brass finishing but wears quickly on steel.
The joint on my last belt lifted. What went wrong?
Usually the belt was run against its direction arrow, was stored folded, or was mounted cold. Check the inside of the belt for an arrow before mounting and run it that way, keep belts hanging in their coil, and let a belt from a cold shop warm to room temperature. If there is no arrow, the joint is bi-directional.
How exact does the 335" length need to be?
