A 325" belt is a little over 27 feet of abrasive, which puts it on the big horizontal stroke sanders used to flatten and finish conference tables, solid-wood tops, wide glued-up panels and full-size doors. The belt runs continuously between two drums and the operator brings a felt or graphite pad down onto the back of it, so the belt has to be flat, evenly jointed and stiff enough not to flutter over a long span. We convert these 6" x 325" stroke sander belts in Anaheim, California on poly-cotton cloth that meets that requirement and can be run wet or dry.
Choose Aluminum Oxide for nearly all woodworking, Silicon Carbide for plastics, solid surface, composites and the cleanest finishing scratch, and Zirconia for heavy stock removal on hardwood or for metal. Sold two belts to a pack in 36 through 400 grit.

Which 6" x 325" belt material should you choose?
Most stroke sander work is wood, and most of that should be done with aluminum oxide. The other two grains earn a place for specific jobs.
- Aluminum Oxide: heat-treated grain on poly-cotton cloth. The right choice for solid wood, veneered panels, MDF and plywood roughly 95 percent of the time. It cuts steadily under light pad pressure, does not tear out grain, and gives the longest life on wood. It also handles light work on aluminum and steel if you want one belt for a mixed shop.
- Silicon Carbide: harder and sharper than aluminum oxide and leaves the finest, most uniform scratch. Use it on solid surface (acrylic and polyester sheet), plastics, fiberglass, composites, stone and non-ferrous metal, and for finishing passes on wood where you want a cleaner surface under a clear coat. It wears faster than aluminum oxide on steel.
- Zirconia: self-sharpening grain that needs moderate to heavy pad pressure. Choose it for flattening rough glued-up hardwood tops at 36 to 60 grit, for weld and plate work on steel, and for heavy removal on aluminum. On a woodworking stroke sander it is easy to press too hard with zirconia and dig or burn, so keep it for the coarse stages. Offered here in 36 through 120 grit.
A furniture shop should stock Aluminum Oxide in 80, 120 and 180 with one Zirconia 36 or 40 for rough tops. A solid-surface or plastics shop should stock Silicon Carbide from 120 through 400.

On a stroke sander never skip more than one grit. The pad only removes the previous scratch pattern; anything deeper shows up as lines when the finish goes on.
What machines take a 6" x 325" belt?
- Horizontal stroke sanders with a long table and a 6" wide belt spanning two drums roughly 13 feet apart. These are the production machines for tabletops, countertop blanks, large panels and doors, and 325" is one of the common factory loop lengths in this class.
- Long-bed edge sanders and combination stroke/edge machines built around the same loop. Confirm the length in the manual or measure a known-good belt; a few inches either way matters on a stroke sander because the tension drum has limited travel.
Belt direction: check the inside of the belt for an arrow before you mount it and run it in that direction. Slide the belt on with the tension released, tension it, rotate by hand, and set tracking so the belt rides centred on both drums before powering up. On a machine with an oscillating drum, let the oscillation settle for a few seconds before you touch the pad down.

How to get the most out of it
- Keep the pad moving. The belt runs continuously, so any place the pad dwells becomes a dip. Sweep the pad along the length of the work and step across in overlapping passes, feeding the table as you go.
- Use the lightest pressure that cuts. Aluminum oxide on wood wants pad weight plus a little. Press hard and the belt heats, the pad wears unevenly and cherry, maple and birch burn. Save firm pressure for zirconia at 36 to 60 grit.
- Work with the grain on the final grits. Coarse flattening can go across the grain slightly, but from 120 up run the pad with the grain or the scratches will read under stain.
- Step through the grits in order. 80 to 120 to 180 is the standard furniture sequence. Wipe or blow the panel between grits so coarse dust does not ride under the finer belt.
- Clean the belt rather than replacing it. Pitch and finish residue pack the grain long before it is dull. A crepe-rubber belt eraser held lightly against the running belt brings an aluminum oxide belt back.
- Run strong dust extraction. A 27-foot belt throws a lot of dust, and packed dust is what burns panels. Keep both hoods connected and empty the collector.
- Store the spare belt hanging. A belt this long folded in a corner takes a set and thumps under the pad. Hang it over a large-diameter peg, out of sunlight, and let it come to shop temperature before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
How do I confirm my stroke sander takes a 6" x 325" belt?
Check the belt size plate on the machine or the manual first. If neither is available, lay an old belt flat and measure its full circumference, or measure around both drums with the tension drum set to the middle of its travel. A 6" x 325" belt is about 27 feet around; if your measurement is a few inches different, order that length instead.
Which grit should stay on the stroke sander for tabletops?
For solid-wood tops that come off the wide belt or planer, keep 80 grit aluminum oxide mounted for general surfacing, step to 120 to remove that scratch, and finish at 150 or 180 before stain or clear. Keep one zirconia 36 or 40 for flattening rough glue-ups.
Should I choose silicon carbide or aluminum oxide for wood?
Aluminum oxide for almost all of it. It lasts longer on wood and cuts steadily under light pad pressure. Silicon carbide is worth using for the final pass under a clear finish where you want the finest scratch, and it is the correct grain for solid surface, plastics and composites run on the same machine.
Can a 6" x 325" zirconia belt be used for finishing?
No. Zirconia is offered here in 36 through 120 grit and only sharpens itself under pressure, which is the opposite of what you want at finishing grits on a stroke sander. Use it for flattening rough hardwood and for metal, then switch to aluminum oxide or silicon carbide from 120 up.
Why does my belt burn the panel?
Burning on a stroke sander comes from a stalled pad, too much pad pressure, a loaded belt or weak dust extraction. Keep the pad moving in overlapping sweeps, lighten up, clean the belt with a belt eraser, and check both dust hoods. Cherry and maple show burns first and are a good early warning.
Can these belts be run wet?
Yes, the poly-cotton cloth backing can be run wet or dry, which suits stroke sanders and edge sanders set up with coolant for solid surface, stone or metal. Never introduce water on a woodworking machine; it is not built for it and wet wood dust ruins the belt.
