Ninety inches of 3" belt is an edge sander length: the long loop on small oscillating edge sanders and compact stroke sanders that spend most of each revolution cooling off, which is why a 3" x 90" belt runs cooler and lasts longer than a bench belt doing the same job. We stock this size for the shops that run those machines on metal as much as wood, so the options are Ceramic, Zirconia, Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) and Cloth A/O.
Fabricators use the zirconia and ceramic belts for deburring plate, tube and extrusion edges; cabinet and millwork shops use the aluminum oxide belts for door and panel edges. Converted in Anaheim, California, four belts to a pack, 24 through 600 grit, all on cloth that runs wet or dry.

Which 3" x 90" belt should you choose for your edge sander?
The right grain depends on what rides against the platen most of the day.
- Cloth A/O: the woodworking belt and the finishing belt. Aluminum oxide cuts hardwood, plywood, MDF and plastics cleanly at edge-sander pressure without tearing the grain, and it is the only option we carry above 120 grit, so every 150 through 600 belt in this size is aluminum oxide. Poly-cotton cloth, wet or dry.
- Zirconia: for steel plate, tube and bar edges and for heavy hardwood removal. The grain self-sharpens under moderate-to-heavy pressure and runs cooler than aluminum oxide on metal. Stocked 24 through 120 on a Y-weight polyester-cotton backing.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): zirconia with a topical grinding aid over the one already in the resin. The extra lubricant lowers heat at the contact line, which keeps stainless edges from bluing and stops aluminum extrusions packing the belt. Y-weight polyester, wet or dry.
- Ceramic (Shredder): the orange-red belt for stainless, hardened steel and high-alloy edges on an edge sander with enough rigidity and power to load it. Its grain renews its cutting edges continuously, so it removes stock faster and cooler than zirconia for most of its life.
Grits differ by grain and the selector shows what is in stock. A shop that runs both wood and metal on one edge sander should keep separate belts for each and never let steel swarf reach the wood belt.

What machines take a 3" x 90" belt?
We have not verified individual models for the 3" x 90" size, so match the width and length in your manual before ordering. This length is found on:
- Small oscillating edge sanders built around a 3" wide belt, the benchtop and compact floor machines used for door edges, face frames and small metal parts.
- Compact stroke sanders where a 3" belt runs between two drums and the operator presses a pad onto the belt.
- Shop-built long-bed belt grinders whose drum spacing gives a 90" loop.
Mounting: release tension, slide the belt over both drums with the grain out, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and point it the way the belt runs, re-tension, then rotate by hand and adjust tracking until the belt sits centered on the platen. Long belts wander more than short ones, so re-check tracking after the first minute under load. Other 3" lengths are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the table square to the platen and check it after each belt change; on a long belt a small error shows as a taper along the whole edge.
- Feed against the belt direction with steady, moderate pressure and keep the part moving. Stopping to fix a spot dishes the edge on wood and blues stainless.
- Use the oscillation if the machine has it; it spreads wear across the belt height and stops a groove forming at the table line.
- Match pressure to grain. Lean on zirconia and ceramic so they fracture and stay sharp; ease off with aluminum oxide on wood so it cuts rather than burns.
- Lubricate aluminum with a grease stick on the running belt, or run wet where the machine allows it, and use the Zirconia+ belt in the coarse grits.
- Clean loaded belts with a crepe rubber belt eraser and keep dust extraction on; loading is why a long belt seems to wear out early.
- Separate wood and metal dust. Sparks and fine wood dust in one collector is a fire risk.
- Store belts hanging in their coil, away from humidity, and let a cold belt warm up before running it.

Frequently asked questions
Is a 3" x 90" belt only for metal, or can I use it on a woodworking edge sander?
Both. Choose Cloth A/O for wood; aluminum oxide cuts hardwood, plywood and MDF edges cleanly at edge-sander pressure and is the grain we recommend for wood almost every time. Zirconia and ceramic are for steel and stainless and are too aggressive for wood edges, where they tear the grain and burn.
Why does a long 3" x 90" belt last longer than a short belt?
Only a few inches of belt are in contact with the work at any moment. On a 90" loop each grain spends most of the revolution travelling and cooling before it cuts again, so the belt runs cooler, loads more slowly and spreads wear over more abrasive. The same grit on a short bench belt heats and dulls sooner.
Which 3" x 90" belt should I use for deburring aluminum extrusions?
Use Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid) at 60 to 120 for the deburring pass and Cloth A/O at 150 to 320 for the finish. The grinding aid slows loading, and a grease stick on the running belt or a wet setup slows it further. Start no coarser than 60 on aluminum unless you are removing a heavy casting edge.
How do I stop a 3" x 90" belt tracking off the drum?
Set tracking with the machine off by rotating the belt by hand, then fine-tune at speed with no load, then check again under load. Make sure both drums are clean and the tension is set as the manual specifies. A belt that still walks usually means a worn drum crown or a belt that was stored folded and has taken a set.
What grit gives a brushed finish on stainless with this belt?
Deburr and blend at 80 to 120 with the Zirconia+ or ceramic belt, then grain at 180 to 320 with Cloth A/O, feeding the part in one direction along the platen. Keep the part moving and the pressure light so the surface never heat-tints. Finish with a non-woven belt if you want a softer satin.
