Metal fabricators and knife makers who run a long-bed 3" belt grinder, and cabinet shops with a 3" oscillating edge sander, both need the same thing from a 3" x 118" belt: a cloth backing stiff enough to hold flat on a platen for ten feet at a time, and a grain matched to the material. We convert these belts in Anaheim, California, in four abrasives so one machine can move from hogging steel to finishing hardwood by changing the belt.

Which 3" x 118" belt should you choose?
The four options are not good-better-best; they are different tools. Not every grit is stocked in every grain, so pick the material first and the grit menu shows what is available.
- Aluminum Oxide X-weight: heavy, stiff poly-cotton cloth with a tough, blocky grain. The belt for aggressive stock removal on hardwood, general-purpose sanding, and metal when you want the lowest-cost belt. It holds flat against a platen and resists tearing at the edges. Best all-rounder for a woodshop edge sander from 40 to 220.
- Aluminum Oxide J-weight: the same grain on a light, flexible cloth. It follows curves on the slack section of the belt, wraps handle scales and spoon-shaped work, and gives a softer scratch in the fine grits. Choose it for contours and for 220–600 finishing; do not expect it to hog stock against a platen.
- Zirconia: the fabrication grain. It micro-fractures under load to expose fresh edges, so it cuts cooler and lasts longer than aluminum oxide on carbon steel, stainless and alloys, provided you give it pressure. Keep it in the 40–120 range; above that it dulls without refreshing.
- Ceramic: the top option for extreme stock removal on the toughest metals. Sol-gel grain that holds a near-constant cut rate on stainless, hardened and tool steel, titanium and nickel alloys, and runs coolest of the four when worked hard. It needs a rigid machine and firm pressure; run it light on a hobby sander and it glazes and blues the part.
Knife makers running a 3" grinder typically buy ceramic 40–60 for profiling and bevels, zirconia or ceramic 80–120 for setting the grind, then aluminum oxide J-weight 220–600 for refining the finish and dressing handles.

What machines take a 3" x 118" belt?
- Long-bed oscillating edge sanders built for a 3" belt, the machines cabinet and millwork shops use to true door and face-frame edges. Match the 118" length to the manual; 3" x 132" is a separate product.
- 3" belt grinders and long-bed platen grinders used in metal fabrication and knife shops for profiling, bevel grinding and deburring. Zirconia and ceramic belong here.
- Horizontal stroke sanders and backstand grinders set up for a 3" belt path of this length.
Most tensioners absorb about a quarter inch of length difference, not more. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting, tension it, and centre the tracking before the work touches the belt. If your machine takes a length or width we do not list, we make custom 3" belts to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Match pressure to grain. Aluminum oxide cuts best with light, steady pressure. Zirconia and ceramic must be leaned on; that pressure is what fractures the grain and keeps it sharp. Light pressure with ceramic is the most common cause of a blued stainless part.
- Use the platen for flat, the slack belt for curves. Flat edges and bevels go against the backed section with X-weight, zirconia or ceramic. Curves, handle scales and rounded edges go on the slack run with J-weight.
- Keep the work moving and keep it cool. On steel, dip the part in water between passes and never let the colour change. On wood, move steadily along the platen; dwelling burns cherry and maple and glazes the belt.
- Step grits in order. 40 to 60 to 80 to 120 to 180 to 220, then 320, 400, 600 for pre-polish. A skipped grit on a long platen shows as straight scratches under the next finish.
- Slow down for aluminum and thin edges. Reduce belt speed where the machine allows, and rub a grease stick on the running belt when sanding aluminum or brass to stop loading.
- Clean wood belts on the run. A crepe-rubber belt eraser touched to a running aluminum oxide belt clears resin and pitch and restores the cut.
- Keep steel and wood dust apart. Grinding sparks into a wood-dust collector is a fire risk. Use a dedicated metal-rated collector or wet collection on the metal side.
- Store belts hanging or loosely rolled. A folded 118" belt takes a crease that thumps on every revolution. Let a cold belt warm up before running it.

Frequently asked questions
Ceramic or zirconia for stainless steel on a 3" x 118" belt?
Ceramic, if your grinder has the horsepower and rigidity to load it. Ceramic holds a near-constant cut rate on stainless, hardened and high-alloy steel and runs cooler under heavy pressure. Zirconia is the better buy for carbon and mild steel, general fabrication and machines that cannot deliver that pressure; it is also less sensitive to being run light.
What is the difference between Aluminum Oxide X-weight and J-weight?
The grain is the same; the cloth is different. X-weight is a heavy, stiff poly-cotton for aggressive stock removal against a platen on wood and metal. J-weight is a light, flexible cloth that follows curves on the slack belt and gives a softer scratch in the fine grits. Buy X for flat work and shaping, J for contours and 220–600 finishing.
Can I run a ceramic 3" x 118" belt on a small hobby edge sander?
We do not recommend it. Ceramic grain needs firm pressure and a rigid, well-powered machine to fracture and self-sharpen. On a light-duty sander it glazes, stops cutting and puts heat into the part, which blues stainless and burns wood. Aluminum oxide X-weight or zirconia will serve a small machine better.
What is the 600 grit belt used for?
600 grit is a pre-polish belt. Knife makers use it after 320 and 400 to refine a bevel before cork belts, buffing or hand finishing, and hardware shops use it to bring brass and aluminum to a fine satin. Use light pressure and, on steel, dip the part in water between passes so the edge never changes colour.
Will a 3" x 118" belt fit a machine that calls for 3" x 117" or 119"?
Usually. Most edge sanders and belt grinders take up about a quarter inch of length through the tensioner, so 118" fits machines specified within that band. 3" x 132" is a different product and will not fit. If your manual calls for another length, we make custom 3" belts to order in about 3 days.
Which grit should I stop at on wood before staining?
Stop at 180 or 220 on an edge sander. Both leave a surface that takes stain evenly. Going finer than 220 with a belt burnishes the wood and closes the grain, so the stain sits on top and looks blotchy. Use aluminum oxide X-weight for flat edges and J-weight if the piece has curves.
