Graining a full sheet of stainless by hand never matches from panel to panel; running it through a wide belt sander with a non-woven belt does. These 25" x 48" surface conditioning belts are the finishing belt for 24–25" wide belt sanders and graining machines: a nylon web loaded with aluminum oxide grain on a reinforced scrim backing that stands up to the tension and tracking of an automated machine and lays down one continuous, repeatable satin across the whole width.
They are sold one belt at a time in Coarse, Medium, Very Fine or Ultra Fine, for stainless, aluminum, steel, titanium and other non-ferrous sheet and plate. Use them after a coated belt to blend, deburr, remove heat tint and mill haze, and produce the directional finish that laser-cut and sheared parts are sold with.

Which grade should you run on a wide belt for sheet stock?
On a wide belt sander the grade sets the finish for every part that goes through, so choose from the customer's finish spec and the coated head that runs before it.
- Coarse (40–60 grit scratch), brown: first non-woven pass on hot-rolled or laser-cut steel plate to remove scale, heat tint and cutting dross, and for stripping oxidation from aluminum plate. Leaves a coarse brushed matte.
- Medium (80–120 grit scratch), maroon: blends the scratch from an 80–120 grit coated head into an even matte and deburrs sheared and laser-cut edges as the sheet passes through. A common final finish for painted or powder-coated parts.
- Very Fine (180–240 grit scratch), blue: the graining grade. Produces the uniform directional satin of a #4-style finish on stainless sheet for food-service, architectural and appliance work, and a clean brushed finish on aluminum.
- Ultra Fine (320–400 grit scratch), grey: a fine satin for decorative stainless and aluminum sheet and the pre-polish step for panels that will be buffed.
A two-head machine typically runs a coated belt on the front head and Very Fine non-woven on the rear; a single-head machine changes belts between passes.

Non-woven web refines; it does not calibrate. Run the coated head to the grit that matches the grade, then the non-woven belt, and do not skip more than one grade between them.
Which machines take a 25 x 48 wide belt?

Match both width and length to your manual; most machines tolerate about a quarter inch on length. Non-woven belts have no direction arrow and can be mounted either way. Fit the belt with the machine off, tension to the maker's setting, then jog the machine and confirm the oscillation is centered before feeding a part. Because the web is thicker than a cloth belt, set platen or contact-drum pressure lighter than you would for a coated belt of the same width. Steel and aluminum swarf must go to a metal-rated or wet collection system, not a wood-dust collector. If your machine takes a longer belt, we stock 25" x 60" and make other sizes to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Run the coated head first. Calibrate, deburr or remove scale with a zirconia or ceramic wide belt to 80–120 grit for Medium or 180–220 for Very Fine. The non-woven belt only refines what the coated head left.
- Back the pressure off. Set the platen or contact drum for light contact. Heavy pressure crushes the web against the drum, heats the sheet, tears fibers from the scrim and shortens belt life more than anything else you can do.
- Slow the belt, keep the feed steady. Non-woven works best at reduced belt speed with a constant conveyor rate. A pause in feed leaves a bright band across the sheet.
- Grain in one direction. Feed every sheet the same way so the satin lines run the same direction on every part; for panels that will be seen together, keep the same grade, pressure and feed for the whole batch.
- Use mist coolant on aluminum and titanium. The web is waterproof. A light mist stops aluminum smearing into the belt and keeps titanium from discoloring; make sure the machine is set up for it.
- Clean and store like a wide belt. Blow the web out with air between runs, hang the belt on a large-radius rack, never fold it, and keep it out of sunlight and humidity. Let a cold belt warm to room temperature before running.

Can a woodworking wide belt sander run this belt on metal?
The belt will mount on any 25 x 48 machine, but metal finishing needs the machine set up for it: a metal-rated or wet dust collection system instead of a wood-dust collector, because steel sparks and aluminum dust in wood dust are a fire risk, and lighter platen pressure than you would use for wood. Clean the machine thoroughly before going back to wood.
Why does the sheet come out with bright bands or an uneven grain?
Bands across the sheet come from a pause or change in conveyor speed; uneven grain across the width comes from too much platen pressure or a belt that has been run hard on one side. Reduce pressure, keep the feed constant, confirm oscillation is centered, and grain every sheet in the same direction with the same grade for the whole batch.

Can I use coolant with a non-woven wide belt?
Yes. The nylon web and scrim backing are waterproof, so a 25 x 48 surface conditioning belt can be run with a mist coolant on a machine designed for wet or mist operation. That is the preferred way to grain aluminum and titanium sheet, because it stops metal smearing into the web and controls heat. Dry running is fine on stainless and steel.
