A 25-inch open-end wide belt sander is the machine most job shops already own when they start running steel plate, stainless blanks and aluminum through it, and the wood belt on the drum is the first thing that has to change. These 25" x 48" metalworking belts carry the three grains that make a shop wide belt sander useful on metal: zirconia with a grinding aid for mild steel and general fabrication, ceramic for stainless and hardened parts, and cloth aluminum oxide for aluminum, brass and all the finishing grits from 150 to 600.
Every grain is coated on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth that runs wet or dry and holds its length under drum pressure. We convert them in Anaheim, California and pack them in twos, which is how a shop keeps a coarse and a fine belt on hand for one machine.

Which grain should you run on a 25-inch wide belt sander for metal?
Shop wide belt sanders in the 24–25 inch class have less horsepower and less platen pressure than industrial deburring lines, so the grain choice is about matching the grain to what the machine can deliver, not just to the metal.
- Zirconia (green or blue belt): buy this first for mild steel, A36 plate, tube frames and flame-cut brackets. It fractures and re-sharpens under moderate drum pressure, which a shop machine can provide. Ours has a grinding aid both in the resin bond and coated on top, so it stays cooler than plain zirconia and is the safe choice on stainless when you cannot load a ceramic belt properly. Zirconia is stocked 24–120 grit only.
- Ceramic (orange-red belt): for 304 and 316 stainless, hardened and tool steel, and heavy removal where heat tint is unacceptable. Ceramic grain continuously renews its cutting edges and takes stock off cooler and faster than zirconia, but only when the machine leans on it. On a light single-head machine at low feed pressure it will glaze and warm the part, and zirconia will outperform it.
- Cloth A/O (brown belt): heat-treated aluminum oxide on the same poly-cotton cloth. This is the grain for aluminum sheet and plate, brass, bronze and copper, and it is the only grain offered in 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit. Every graining and pre-polish pass on this size is an AO belt.
Not every grain is stocked in every grit; the variant selector shows what is available. Above 120 grit, move to cloth AO regardless of the metal.

For aluminum sheet, start at 60 or 80, not coarser, and stop at 120–220 before switching to a surface conditioning belt for the final brushed look. Do not skip more than one grade between passes on any metal; the fine belt will not remove a 40-grit scratch, it will only brighten it.
What machines take a 25" x 48" belt?
- 24–25 inch open-end wide belt sanders of the Grizzly 24-inch class and the SuperMax and Laguna 25-50 style, when set up for metal with a metal-rated dust system.
- Woodmaster-class shop wide belt and drum machines that take a 25-inch wide, 48-inch long loop.
- Small deburring and graining machines for laser-cut parts and sheet blanks up to 25 inches wide.
Width must match exactly; length on most wide belt machines tolerates roughly plus or minus a quarter inch, and the tracking oscillation centres the belt inside that window. We have not verified specific model numbers for this size, so confirm the belt dimensions in your manual or measure the belt you are replacing. If your machine takes a different length, we make it to order in about three days. Look for a direction arrow on the inside of the belt before mounting; if one is printed, run the belt in that direction.
How to get the most out of them
- Convert the dust system before the belt. Steel sparks and fine aluminum dust must never enter a collector that has wood dust in it. Run a dedicated metal-rated collector, a spark arrestor, or wet collection on a machine that sees metal.
- Load the grain. Zirconia and ceramic need pressure to fracture and stay sharp. Set the drum depth so the belt is removing stock, then keep the feed steady; a belt that has stopped cutting glazes and puts heat into the part.
- Never let a part sit under the head. Stopping the conveyor with stainless under the drum blues it in seconds. Feed through, inspect, feed again.
- Slow down for aluminum. Lower belt speed, cloth AO or grinding-aid zirconia, and a grease stick rubbed on the running belt when it starts to load. Clean the belt with a crepe eraser rather than pressing harder.
- Use the drum for coarse grits and the platen for fine. The contact drum removes stock; the platen produces the flat, even scratch you want at 150 and finer.
- Run wet where the machine allows. The poly-cotton backing is built for it, and coolant keeps stainless from tinting and the belt from loading.
- Store spares hanging on a wide peg, away from humidity and direct sun, and let cold belts warm to room temperature before running.

Frequently asked questions
Can I run metal on my 25-inch wide belt sander with these 25" x 48" belts?
Yes, provided the dust system is right. A shop wide belt sander will grind steel, stainless and aluminum with zirconia, ceramic or cloth aluminum oxide belts, but steel sparks and aluminum fines must go to a dedicated metal-rated collector or wet collection, never into a bin that holds wood dust.
Zirconia or ceramic for stainless steel sheet?
Ceramic if your machine can apply firm, steady drum pressure; it cuts cooler and keeps its rate on 304 and 316. On a lighter 25-inch shop machine, our grinding-aid zirconia is often the better result because the lubricating coat controls heat at the pressure the machine can actually deliver.
Which grit first for weld removal on steel plate?
Start at 36 or 40 grit zirconia on the contact drum to take the crown down to the plate, then 60 to level, then 80–120 to blend out the coarse scratch. If the weld is heavy and the machine has the power, 24 grit ceramic removes it fastest with the least heat.
Why do the 150–600 grit belts only come in aluminum oxide?
Zirconia and ceramic earn their cost at coarse and medium grits where they fracture under pressure. Above 120 they leave a bright scratch rather than a finish, so every 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit belt on this size is heat-treated cloth aluminum oxide, which produces the even grain you want.
Can these belts be used wet?
Yes. All three grains are on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth that runs wet or dry. Coolant-fed graining machines and wet deburring heads use them directly, and running wet reduces heat tint on stainless and keeps aluminum from packing the grain.
My machine belt measures a little over 48 inches. Will this fit?
Most wide belt machines accept about plus or minus a quarter inch in length, and the tracking oscillation centres the belt within that window. If your manual calls for a different nominal length, we make 25-inch wide belts to order in about three days in any of these grains.
