2-1/2" x 60" Surface Conditioning Belts (Non-Woven), 4 PACK
2-1/2" x 60" Surface Conditioning Belts (Non-Woven), 4 PACK
Available in stock (49992)
The extra half inch of width on a 2-1/2" x 60" belt is what fabrication shops running an Ellis 6000 or Burr King 960-250 belt grinder buy it for: it covers the edge of 2" flat bar or plate in one pass, so deburring and edge blending come out even instead of striped. This non-woven version is the finishing belt for those machines. It breaks edges on laser-cut and sawn plate, blends ground welds, cleans mill scale and heat tint and leaves a uniform satin on stainless, steel and aluminum without changing a dimension.
Four belts of one grade per pack, converted in Anaheim, California. The grades are colour-coded: Coarse is brown, Medium is maroon, Very Fine is blue and Ultra Fine is grey, each leaving a finish that corresponds to a band of coated-belt grits.
- Fits the Ellis 6000, Burr King 960-250 and other 2-1/2" x 60" belt grinders
- 2-1/2" width covers a 2" plate edge or bar face in a single pass
- Aluminum oxide grain in a nylon web: deburrs and blends, holds part dimensions
- Coarse, Medium, Very Fine and Ultra Fine, 40-60 through 320-400 grit finishes
- 60" loop runs cool and lasts through production deburring
- 4 belts per pack; free shipping on orders over $200
Which grade should you run for plate deburring and weld blending?
The four grades share one web and differ in grain size. On a 2-1/2" x 60" grinder the choice usually follows the material and the coating that comes next.
- Coarse (brown, 40-60 grit equivalent): mill scale and rust on hot-rolled plate and bar, heavy dross and burrs on plasma- and laser-cut edges, weld spatter, old coatings on rework. The only grade that removes noticeable material; it is also the one most fab shops keep mounted for plate edges.
- Medium (maroon, 80-120 grit equivalent): edge breaking on machined and laser-cut stainless and aluminum, blending the 80-120 grit scratch from a coated belt, removing heat tint from stainless welds and evening a steel weldment before paint or powder coat.
- Very Fine (blue, 180-240 grit equivalent): a #4-style directional satin on stainless bar and plate and a uniform finish on aluminum and titanium. Use after 150-220 grit coated.
- Ultra Fine (grey, 320-400 grit equivalent): the finest satin and the last belt before buffing; also the grade for aluminum going to anodizing. We are one of the few converters offering it as a belt.
For carbon steel plate going to powder coat: Coarse to strip scale, Medium to even the surface, stop. For stainless: coated to 150, Medium to blend and clean, Very Fine along the grain to match the sheet.
Grit guide: grade, colour and equivalent finish
| Grade / colour | Use it for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Coarse / brown | Scale, dross, rust, heavy burrs | Roughly 40-60 grit; removes some material |
| Medium / maroon | Edge break, weld blending, heat tint | Roughly 80-120 grit |
| Very Fine / blue | #4-style satin on stainless and aluminum | Roughly 180-240 grit |
| Ultra Fine / grey | Fine satin, pre-anodize, pre-buff | Roughly 320-400 grit |
Read the numbers as the scratch pattern the web leaves, not a removal rate. A brown non-woven belt takes far less metal than a 60 grit coated belt, which is why it can clean and deburr a plate edge without pulling it out of square.
Which machines take a 2-1/2" x 60" belt?
- Ellis 6000 belt grinder, named on our original listing.
- Burr King 960-250 2-1/2" x 60" belt grinder, also named on our original listing.
- Other 2-1/2" x 60" belt grinders used for plate deburring, weld blending and general fabrication finishing.
This is a 2-1/2" wide belt; it is not a substitute for a 2" x 60" belt and will not track on a 2" machine. Measure the belt you are replacing before ordering. To mount, release the tension, slip the belt over the wheels with any direction arrow on the inside pointing the way the belt runs, re-tension and adjust tracking until the belt sits centred on the platen. The web is thicker than cloth, so a small tracking correction is normal. Other widths and lengths are made to order in about three days.
How to get the most out of it
- Slow the belt where you can. On a variable-speed grinder, run non-woven well below coated-belt speed. On a fixed-speed machine, compensate with light pressure and short contact.
- Light to moderate pressure. The web works by contact. Leaning plate into it folds the fibres, heats the edge and strips the belt. Coarse in particular will remove material if pushed.
- Use the full width. Present the plate edge square to the belt so the whole 2-1/2" does the work; the edge comes out even and the belt wears evenly.
- Keep the part moving in one direction. Draw bar and plate along the belt in overlapping strokes. Dwelling leaves a bright patch; cross strokes show on stainless.
- Come in from 120-220 grit on finish work. Non-woven refines the last coated scratch; it does not remove 36-60 grit marks or a raw weld bead.
- Lubricate lightly on aluminum. A trace of oil or wax stops soft alloys smearing into the web. Steel, stainless and titanium run dry.
- Store belts hung or loosely rolled, away from solvent, sunlight and damp, and let cold belts warm before running them.
Use it for / don't use it for
Use it for
- Deburring and edge breaking on laser-cut, plasma-cut and sawn plate and bar
- Cleaning mill scale, rust, dross and spatter from steel fabrications before paint or powder coat
- Blending ground welds and removing heat tint on stainless plate, bar and tube
- #4-style satin finishing on stainless and aluminum flats
- Deburring aluminum and titanium parts without loading or changing dimensions
Don't use it for
- Weld removal, bevelling or stock removal; use a zirconia or ceramic coated belt first
- Removing coarse scratches from 36-60 grit belts
- Producing a mirror; go from Ultra Fine to a buffing wheel and compound
- Heavy pressure or dwell, which tears the web and blues stainless

Frequently asked questions
Which grinders take a 2-1/2" x 60" surface conditioning belt?
Any belt grinder built for a 2-1/2" x 60" belt. Our original listing named the Ellis 6000 and the Burr King 960-250. The belt mounts like the coated belts you already run on the machine; because the web is thicker than cloth, plan on a small tracking adjustment after you fit it.
Why choose 2-1/2" wide instead of 2"?
Width. A 2-1/2" belt covers the edge of 2" flat bar or plate in a single pass, so a deburred or blended edge comes out even instead of showing an overlap line. It is not interchangeable with a 2" x 60" belt; each machine is built for one width, so measure the belt you are replacing.
Can I take mill scale off hot-rolled plate before powder coating?
Yes. Coarse (brown) removes light scale and rust from plate edges and faces, and Medium (maroon) evens the surface so powder bonds uniformly. It is the one grade that removes real material, so keep the plate moving. Thick, flaky scale comes off faster with a zirconia coated belt first, then Coarse non-woven to clean up.
Will it clean dross and burrs off laser-cut and plasma-cut edges?
Coarse handles hard dross and heavy burrs on steel; Medium is enough for the light burr on laser-cut stainless and aluminum and leaves a cleaner edge. Present the edge square to the belt so the full 2-1/2" width works at once, and use light pressure so the edge stays square rather than rounding over.
Which grade blends a weld on stainless plate?
Level the weld with a coated belt to 120-150 grit first. Then Medium (maroon) blends the ground zone into the plate and removes the heat tint, and Very Fine (blue), run along the grain, matches the surrounding #4-style satin. A 2-1/2" x 60" non-woven belt blends without cutting a new low spot the way a coated belt can.
What do the four colours mean?
Brown is Coarse, roughly a 40-60 grit finish, for scale, dross and heavy burrs. Maroon is Medium, roughly 80-120, for edge breaking and blending. Blue is Very Fine, roughly 180-240, the satin grade for stainless. Grey is Ultra Fine, roughly 320-400, for the finest satin before buffing or anodizing.
How many belts are in the pack and what are the shipping terms?
Each pack contains 4 belts of one grade. Orders over $200 ship free, and unused belts in original packaging can be returned within 30 days. Fabrication shops running these grinders daily can get case pricing and mixed-grade orders by calling 714-646-3299 or emailing sales@maverickabrasives.com.
