A 1/2" face on a 6" wheel is the narrow-profile option in our unmounted range: it reaches into grooves, slots, between fins and around small radii that a 1" or 2" wide wheel bridges over. Mounted on a bench grinder or a small polishing lathe, it turns a pile of small parts into a deburring and blending station where the work comes to the wheel and both hands stay on the part.

Which arbor hole and which grit should you choose?
The arbor hole has to match the spindle exactly; a loose wheel on an undersized shaft runs out of true and tears flaps. Measure the shaft, do not guess from the machine size.
- 5/8" Arbor Hole: the common shaft size on bench grinders and small pedestal grinders. The usual choice for a shop mounting one wheel on a grinder in place of a stone.
- 1" Arbor Hole: polishing lathes, buffing spindles and heavier pedestal machines with 1" shafts, or 1" adapter arbors on a bench grinder.
- 1-3/4" Arbor Hole: dedicated flap wheel finishing machines and industrial spindles built around a 1-3/4" arbor and matching flanges.
Grit on a 1/2" face is chosen for the feature, not the whole part:
- 40 and 60 grit: cleaning cast and forged parts, removing scale and flash, heavy deburring of sawn and sheared edges.
- 80 and 100 grit: general deburring and blending of machined parts, knocking down tool marks in grooves and slots.
- 120 and 150 grit: a uniform brushed finish inside channels, blending before plating or paint.
- 320 and 400 grit: fine satin and pre-polish on stainless, brass and aluminum, and the last step before compound on a buff. Note there is no 180 or 240 in this size, so step 150 to 320 with light pressure.

What machines does a 6" x 1/2" unmounted flap wheel fit?
- Bench grinders that take a 6" wheel, with the flap wheel replacing one of the stones. The 5/8" arbor hole is the one most bench grinder owners need.
- Small polishing lathes and buffing spindles with 5/8" or 1" shafts, giving you an abrasive station next to the buff.
- Flap wheel finishing machines and industrial spindles with 1-3/4" arbors and flanges.
- Pedestal grinders with a 5/8" or 1" shaft, for larger parts.
Flange and mounting notes. An unmounted flap wheel is clamped between two flanges of equal diameter that bear on the hub, not on the flaps. Use the flanges that came with the machine or the arbor adapter, seat the wheel square against the inner flange, and tighten the nut firmly; the standard bench grinder nut is threaded so that rotation tightens it. Never run a 1-3/4" hole on a smaller shaft with a stack of loose bushings. With a 1/2" face, several wheels can also be ganged side by side on a long arbor to build a wider face; keep grits identical.
Stay within the RPM marked on the wheel or the machine's rating. A 6" wheel is rated for bench grinder speed; larger diameters in this range must run slower.
How to get the most out of it
- Mount it so the flaps trail. Look at the wheel from the side: the flap tips should point away from the direction of rotation at the contact point. Mounted backwards, the tips dig in, the wheel chatters and flaps tear out.
- Let the tips flex. Bring the part to the wheel with light pressure and watch the flaps bend slightly. Pushing a narrow wheel hard folds the flaps, heats the part and wears the wheel into a groove.
- Work below center. Present the part slightly below the spindle centerline on a bench grinder so the wheel pulls the work down onto the rest, not up toward you.
- Use the whole face. Even on a 1/2" face, traverse the part across the width so the wheel wears flat rather than crowned.
- Fit the wheel to the groove. For a slot or channel, choose a wheel width just under the feature width and run the slot lengthwise along the face.
- Dress it if it crowns. A worn edge can be squared by lightly touching a coarse stick or scrap abrasive to the running wheel.
- Step grits in order and keep one grinder set up per grit if you run volume; changing wheels is what slows a bench station down.
- Run dry, clear with air. Aluminum and brass load the flaps; blow them out rather than pressing harder.

Frequently asked questions
Which arbor hole fits a standard bench grinder?
Most 6" and 8" bench grinders carry a 5/8" shaft, so the 5/8" arbor hole is the usual choice. Some smaller grinders use a 1/2" shaft, which this wheel does not fit, and some heavier machines use 1". Measure the shaft or check the grinder's manual before ordering; the hole must match the shaft with no play.
Can I put a 6" x 1/2" flap wheel on a bench grinder in place of a stone?
Yes, that is the most common way it is used. Remove the stone and its flanges, slide the flap wheel on with the flaps trailing the direction of rotation, refit both flanges and tighten the nut. Set the tool rest close to the face, and remember that a flap wheel finishes and deburrs; it does not replace a stone for grinding.
Why is there no 180 or 240 grit in this size?
The 6" x 1/2" wheel is stocked in 40, 60, 80, 100, 120, 150, 320 and 400 grit. For most deburring and satin work, 150 followed by 320 with light pressure gives a clean progression; the narrow face means the step is easy to blend. If you need 180 or 240 on a 6" wheel, contact us about availability.
Can several 1/2" wide wheels be stacked to make a wider face?
Yes. Ganging wheels on a long arbor between two flanges is a common way to build a custom face width from 1/2" wheels. Use the same grit on every wheel, mount all of them with the flaps trailing, and clamp the stack firmly so no wheel can slip. The 1" and 1-3/4" arbor holes suit longer arbors on lathes and finishing machines.
Which way round does an unmounted flap wheel go on the spindle?
Mount it so the flap tips trail the direction of rotation at the point where the work touches the wheel. Viewed from the side, the flaps should sweep away from the work, like the bristles of a brush being dragged. Mounted the other way, the tips lead, dig into the part, chatter and tear out of the hub.
Is a 6" wheel rated for a higher speed than the 8" and 12" wheels?
Yes. Speed ratings drop as diameter grows because the flap tips travel farther per revolution. A 6" wheel is the one sized for ordinary bench grinder speed; 8", 10" and 12" wheels are meant for slower spindles such as polishing lathes and flap wheel machines. Always run at or below the RPM marked on the wheel.
