Sixty-four inches is the widest belt we stock, and the machines that run it are big panel sanders: plywood and veneer lines, large-format door and countertop sanders, and multi-head calibrators that take a full sheet across the head in one pass. These are premium cloth-backed aluminum oxide belts, closed coat, converted to 64" x 128" and sold two to a pack in one grit.
Grits run from 36 for calibrating heads through 400 for a final skim on veneer faces and lacquer-ready panels. Aluminum oxide on cloth is the construction we recommend across the whole range for wood-based panels: it holds up under the tension and belt speed of a 64-inch head, tracks reliably on long belt paths, and gives a uniform scratch across the full width. Which grit goes on which head of a 64-inch panel sander?
Every belt on this page is Premium Cloth Backed Aluminum Oxide, closed coat. Zirconia and paper-backed constructions are not stocked in 64" x 128"; we can convert zirconia to order for a calibrating head that runs dense hardwood or a line that also processes metal. For plywood, MDF, particleboard and veneered panels, aluminum oxide is the right grain at every head.
- 36 and 40 grit: calibrating head. Rough-sawn cores, thick glue-ups, badly out-of-flat panels. Contact drum, shallow passes.
- 60 grit: second calibrating or first intermediate head; dimensioning to final thickness.
- 80 and 100 grit: intermediate heads for surfacing calibrated panels. 80 is the highest-hours belt on most lines.
- 120 and 150 grit: pre-finish. Paint-grade MDF and primer-ready plywood stop at 120 or 150.
- 180 and 220 grit: finishing head on the platen for veneered and solid-wood-faced panels that will be stained. Stop at 220 under stain.
- 320 and 400 grit: skim pass on veneer faces, lacquer-ready panels and clear-coat or oil work only. No stock removal; a light platen pass.
A typical four-head panel line runs 60, 100, 150 and 180 or 220. A two-head calibrating-and-finishing setup often runs 80 on the drum and 150 or 180 on the platen.

What machines take a 64" x 128" belt?
- 64-inch wide belt sanders on plywood, veneer, MDF and particleboard lines, and large-format single- and multi-head panel sanders whose size plate reads 64 x 128. The old page called these "timesaver machines", which the trade uses for wide belt sanders in general.
- 64-inch machines with other belt lengths need a custom conversion; length tolerance on most machines is about plus or minus 1/4 inch, so match the size plate on each head rather than the nearest stock size.
Mounting a belt this size is a two-person job: retract the tension roller fully, carry the belt on between you without letting it fold, tension, and set tracking with the oscillation running so the belt swings evenly between the limit sensors. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed. For any other width or length, we convert custom belts in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Protect the joint on the way to the machine. A 64-inch belt is heavy enough to crease itself if it is dragged or folded. Carry it open, mount it straight from the rack, and never store it flat on a bench under other belts.
- Calibrate light, feed fast. 1/64 to 1/32 inch per pass at 36 to 60 grit on hardwood cores, less on MDF and veneer, and less again as grit gets finer. Slow feed is what burns and glazes.
- Watch veneer thickness on the finishing heads. Face veneer is thin; set the finishing head for a skim pass and check for sand-through at the panel edges before running a batch.
- Never skip more than one grit between heads. 60 to 100 to 150 to 220 works; 60 to 150 leaves scratches that show under stain.
- Extraction is belt life. A 64-inch head moves a great deal of dust, and loading is the number one killer of wide belts. Check gates and hoses on every head.
- Clean on the machine. A crepe-rubber belt eraser held lightly against the running belt pulls resin and dust out of the grain and adds noticeable life to finishing belts.
- Spread the wear. When panels are narrower than 64 inches, stagger them across the belt so it wears evenly instead of in a centre track.
- Store hanging on a rack, away from humidity and sunlight, and let cold belts come to shop temperature before mounting.

It is the largest we stock as a listed product. We convert belts to order in other widths and lengths for panel and veneer lines, including sizes wider or longer than this, in about 3 days. Because 64-inch machines almost always run wood-based panels, and closed-coat aluminum oxide on cloth is the construction that holds up under a 64-inch head's tension while giving a uniform scratch across the full width. Zirconia can be converted to order for a calibrating head on dense hardwood or for a line that also runs metal.
How do I keep a belt this large from creasing?
Store it hanging on a rack, never flat under other belts, and carry it to the machine open with two people rather than dragging or folding it. A crease in a cloth belt sets into the backing and thumps against the drum with every revolution, which marks the panel and can start a joint failure.
Which grit is safe for a finishing pass on thin face veneer?
180 or 220 on the platen head with the depth set for a skim pass, not stock removal. Check the panel edges for sand-through before running a batch. Use 320 or 400 only for lacquer-ready or clear-coat panels, and never under stain; a wide belt burnishes wood above 220 and the stain takes unevenly.
What grit sequence gives a paint-grade MDF panel?
For MDF that arrives at thickness, 100 or 120 followed by 150 is enough for primer. If the panel needs calibrating first, run 60, then 100, then 150. Keep passes shallow on the finishing head so the face stays dense; deep passes on MDF open the fibres and soak up primer.
How many belts per pack and can you set up standing orders?
Each pack holds two 64" x 128" belts of the same grit. Panel lines usually order by the case, and we quote case pricing and recurring shipments by phone or email. Orders over $200 ship free, and unused belts in original packaging can be returned within 30 days.
