Stroke sanders are the machines cabinet and millwork shops use to flatten and finish table tops, doors and wide panels that never see a wide belt: the belt runs continuously over two drums and the operator pushes a felt pad down onto it. A 6" x 274" belt is a stroke-sander length, nearly 23 feet of cloth, and we convert it in Anaheim, California, from heat-treated grain on poly-cotton cloth that runs wet or dry.
Choose Aluminum Oxide for wood, composites and general work, Zirconia for heavy stock removal on steel, stainless and aluminum, or Silicon Carbide for plastics, glass, stone and non-ferrous finishing. The range runs from 36 grit for stock removal to 400 grit for fine finishing, sold two belts to a pack.

Which 6" x 274" belt should you choose?
On a stroke sander the operator controls pressure with the pad, so the grain choice matters more than it does on a machine with a fixed platen. Grit availability differs by material; select the material first and the grit list shows what we stock in it.
- Aluminum Oxide: the woodshop default, and our recommendation for wood roughly 95% of the time. It cuts cleanly under the light, moving pressure of a stroke-sander pad, resists burning and is offered in the widest grit spread. It also handles aluminum, steel, stainless and composites when you want the lowest-cost belt for occasional metal work.
- Zirconia: for heavy stock removal and long life on steel, stainless and aluminum. The grain needs pressure to fracture and stay sharp, so on a stroke sander lean on the pad and keep it in the 36–120 grit band. On wood it is usually too aggressive and can tear grain or leave burn marks; reserve it for hogging rough slabs at 36–60.
- Silicon Carbide: the sharpest and hardest of the three, for acrylic and other plastics, solid surface, fiberglass, glass, stone, brass and aluminum. It leaves the cleanest scratch pattern of the three grains at any given grit, which makes it a good finishing choice at 220–400. It wears faster than zirconia on steel.
A panel shop should stock aluminum oxide in 80, 120 and 180. A shop that also strokes steel doors or stainless counters should add zirconia 60 and 80, and switch to aluminum oxide above 120.

What machines take a 6" x 274" belt?
- Horizontal stroke sanders (pad sanders) with a 6" belt and a 274" belt path: the long two-drum machines with a traversing table or a sliding pad carriage, used for table tops, doors, panels and solid-surface counters.
- Long-bed edge sanders that share this belt length; check your manual, because 6" x 264", 6" x 271" and 6" x 300" are separate products and a stroke sander tensioner will not take up that much difference.
- Metal stroke and pad sanders used for graining stainless doors, elevator panels and aluminum sheet; run zirconia for removal and aluminum oxide or silicon carbide for the finishing grain.
Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting. Mount the belt, tension it, jog the machine and centre the tracking before you bring the pad down. If your machine calls for a length we do not list, we make custom 6" belts to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep the pad moving. A stroke sander cuts wherever the pad presses the belt onto the work. Dwell for even a second at 80 grit and you dish the surface and burn maple or cherry. Sweep the pad in overlapping strokes along the grain.
- Use pad pressure to match the grain. Light pressure for aluminum oxide and silicon carbide; firm, steady pressure for zirconia so it keeps fracturing and refreshing its edge.
- Traverse the table, not just the pad. Move the workpiece across the belt width between strokes so the belt wears evenly across its 6" face instead of grooving in the middle.
- Step grits without skipping. 60 to 80 to 120 to 180 to 220. On a stroke sander, a skipped grit shows up as long straight scratches under the finish that follow the belt direction.
- Clean the belt on the run. Touch a crepe-rubber belt eraser to the moving belt away from the work to lift pitch, resin and finish build-up. On aluminum, use a grease stick on the running belt to stop loading.
- Run wet on plastics and metal where the machine allows. The poly-cotton cloth is built for it, and water or coolant keeps acrylic from melting and stainless from bluing.
- Store long belts on a rack. A 274" belt folded on a shelf takes a crease that thumps on the drums for the life of the belt. Hang it or roll it loosely, and let a cold belt warm up before running.

What is a 6" x 274" belt used for?
A 6" x 274" belt is a stroke sander belt. Stroke sanders run a long, continuous belt over two drums while the operator presses a pad down onto it to flatten and finish table tops, doors and panels. The same length also fits some long-bed edge sanders. It is offered in aluminum oxide, silicon carbide and zirconia from 36 to 400 grit.
Which material should I buy for a woodworking stroke sander?
Buy aluminum oxide for wood. Under the light, moving pressure of a stroke-sander pad it cuts cleanly and resists burning, and it is the grain we recommend for woodworking roughly 95% of the time. Zirconia is too aggressive for most wood surfacing and can tear grain or leave burn marks; save it for hogging rough stock or for steel.
How do I stop a stroke sander from leaving dips and burn marks?
Dips and burns both come from stopping the pad. Keep the pad moving in overlapping strokes along the grain, use light pressure with aluminum oxide, and clean a loaded belt with a belt eraser rather than pressing harder. Step grits in order so you are never trying to remove a deep scratch with a fine belt.
Can I use the zirconia 6" x 274" belt on stainless and aluminum?
Yes. Zirconia is the choice for heavy stock removal and long life on steel, stainless and aluminum. Lean on the pad so the grain fractures and stays sharp, keep it in the 36 to 120 grit band, and rub a grease stick on the running belt when sanding aluminum. Switch to aluminum oxide or silicon carbide for finishing grits.
Are these belts wet or dry?
Both. The polyester-cotton cloth backing is made to run in wet or dry applications with any of the three grains. Most woodshops run them dry with dust extraction; shops sanding acrylic, solid surface or stainless often run them wet to control heat and loading.
My machine manual lists a slightly different length. Will a 274" belt fit?
Match the length in your manual as closely as you can. Stroke sander tensioners take up a small amount of variation, but 264", 271" and 300" belts are different products and are not interchangeable with a 274". If your machine needs a length we do not list, we make custom 6" belts to order in about 3 days.
How many belts are in a pack and do you offer case pricing?
