This 54" x 103" metalworking belt is sold per belt in ceramic, zirconia or cloth A/O so a fabrication or finishing shop can stock exactly the grits its line uses, from 24 grit scale removal to a 600 grit pre-polish on stainless sheet.
Ceramic is the pick for stainless, hardened and heat-resistant alloys; zirconia handles carbon steel plate and weld seams at a lower belt cost; cloth A/O covers aluminum and every finishing grit from 150 up. All three are cloth-backed belts that can run wet or dry, converted in Anaheim, California.

Which grain should you load on a 54" Timesaver-type machine?
The machine supplies pressure and feed; the grain decides how that pressure turns into cut and heat. Choose by the metal and by where the belt sits in your sequence.
- Ceramic: the production choice for stainless steel, hardened and heat-treated steel, titanium and nickel alloys. Its orange-red grain fractures into new cutting points under load and holds a near-constant removal rate, so part-to-part stock removal stays consistent across a shift. Use it in the 24–120 grit stages where heat and removal are highest.
- Zirconia: green or blue grain for mild and carbon steel, weld reinforcement, plate descaling and heavy levelling. It costs less than ceramic and self-sharpens as long as it is worked hard. Stocked in the coarse and medium grits, 24 through 120, which is the band where zirconia earns its keep.
- Cloth A/O: brown aluminum oxide on poly-cotton cloth. The right grain for aluminum, brass and bronze at every grit, and the only grain we offer from 150 through 600 on this size. It gives the cleanest, most uniform scratch for a graining or pre-polish finish because it cuts predictably at light pressure where the tougher grains would glaze.
A common three-belt line-up on stainless sheet is ceramic 60 to deburr and level, ceramic 120 to blend, then cloth A/O 180 or 220 to set the directional grain. On aluminum extrusions, cloth A/O 80 followed by 150 with a grease stick on the belt is usually all it takes.

Never skip more than one grit step on a part that will be seen. Each belt only removes the scratch left by the belt before it; a 60 grit line under a 220 finish will show through polishing and coating alike.
What machines take a 54" x 103" belt?

Never put steel or aluminum dust into a collector that also handles wood dust.
How to get the most out of it
- Load the coarse grains. Ceramic and zirconia stay sharp only when the pass is heavy enough to fracture the grain. If the belt goes shiny and the part shows heat tint, increase the removal depth rather than adding another light pass.
- Match belt speed to the metal. Run steel at the machine's higher belt speed. Drop to the lower speed for aluminum and dress the running belt with a grease stick so the chips do not pack into the coat.
- Feed steadily. Slow feed and dwell are what blue stainless and warp thin sheet. Two moderate passes beat one slow heavy one.
- Run wet when the machine allows it. The Y-weight poly-cotton backing on the ceramic and zirconia belts and the poly-cotton on the cloth A/O tolerate coolant, which controls heat tint on stainless and loading on aluminum.
- Clean the belt on the machine. A crepe-rubber belt eraser held lightly against a running cloth A/O belt pulls out packed aluminum and extends the finish grits noticeably.
- Store belts hanging and dry. A 54" belt left folded or on a concrete floor takes a set that shows up as a tracking problem and a chatter mark on the part.

Which 54" x 103" belt gives a brushed finish on stainless sheet?
Deburr and level with a ceramic 60 or 80 grit belt, blend with ceramic or zirconia 120, then set the grain with a cloth A/O 150 through 220 grit belt at light pressure with a steady feed in one direction. If you want a softer satin, follow the A/O belt with a surface conditioning belt rather than going finer on coated abrasive.
Is ceramic worth the extra cost over zirconia on a 54" machine?
On stainless, hardened steel and other heat-sensitive alloys, usually yes: ceramic holds its cut rate longer, runs cooler at a given removal, and produces fewer heat-tinted or rejected parts. On mild steel plate and weld knockdown, zirconia does the job at a lower belt price. For aluminum, cloth A/O is both cheaper and better.
Why does my cloth A/O belt load up on aluminum?
Aluminum is soft and gummy, and at high belt speed the chips weld into the grain instead of clearing. Drop to the machine's lower belt speed, rub a grease stick on the running belt before the first part and again as soon as the cut slows, keep the pressure light, and clean the belt with a crepe belt eraser. Running wet solves it entirely on wet-capable machines.

Can I run a 54" x 103" metalworking belt wet?
Yes. The ceramic and zirconia belts are on a Y-weight polyester-cotton backing and the cloth A/O is on poly-cotton, all of which can be run wet or dry. On wet-capable wide belt machines, coolant is the simplest way to prevent heat tint on stainless and loading on aluminum, and it keeps metal dust out of the air.
What is the difference between this belt and the 54" x 103" wood sanding belt?
The wood belt is aluminum oxide and zirconia graded for hardwood and panel calibrating. This metalworking belt adds ceramic, uses Y-weight poly-cotton under the ceramic and zirconia so it can run wet, and is graded for stainless, steel and aluminum. Running a wood belt on stainless normally ends in a glazed belt and a blue part.
