Single-head 52-inch wide belt sanders that take an 86-1/2-inch belt are the machines a lot of mixed-material shops own: one day it is a run of cabinet doors, the next it is aluminum sheet or a stack of carbon-fiber panels. We convert this size with heat-treated aluminum oxide on closed-coat cloth, heat-treated zirconia, and paper-backed aluminum oxide for economical finishing on wood.
Heat treating toughens the grain so it resists fracturing prematurely under a wide belt's load, which is what gives these belts long life on a single-head machine that has to do every grit with one belt at a time. Grits run 36 through 400, two belts of one construction and grit per pack. Converted in Anaheim, California.

Which 52" x 86-1/2" construction fits your work?
On a single-head machine you change belts between grits, so pick each grit's construction for the job that grit does.
- Cloth Closed Coat A/O: heat-treated aluminum oxide on poly-cotton cloth. The general-purpose belt for wood, MDF, plywood, aluminum, brass, plastics and carbon fiber, and the right grain for everything finer than 120 grit. Closed coat puts about a quarter more grain on the cloth than open coat, which means longer life; choose open coat only for very soft, resinous softwood, and closed coat for all metal.
- Zirconia: heat-treated zirconia grain that fractures under load and keeps a sharp edge. The belt for calibrating hardwood at 36 to 60 grit, for glue-line removal on dense species, and for mild steel plate and weld knockdown at 36 to 120. It needs pressure to work; above 120 grit use aluminum oxide.
- Paper A/O: aluminum oxide on a stiff paper backing. Use it for finishing passes on wood at 120 to 400 grit, where its flatness gives a uniform scratch and its lower cost matters on volume work. Paper tears more easily than cloth, so keep it off metal, off coarse calibrating passes, and away from any machine with a rough platen edge.
On composites and plastics, aluminum oxide cloth at 80 to 220 with strong dust extraction is the usual setup; on carbon fiber take light passes and change belts as soon as the cut slows, because the resin loads the grain quickly.
Grit sequence for a single-head 52-inch machine
The sequence most shops run on wood through this machine is 80, then 120, then 180 for the last pass, and that matches what we recommend. What condition the stock arrives in decides where you start.

What machines take a 52" x 86-1/2" belt?
- 52-inch single-head wide belt sanders whose size plate reads 52 x 86-1/2. The half inch matters: length tolerance on most wide belt machines is about plus or minus 1/4 inch, so an 86-inch or 87-inch belt is not a substitute.
- 52-inch machines with other lengths take our 52" x 75", 52" x 103" or 52" x 138" belts.
Mounting: retract the tension roller fully, carry the belt on without creasing it, tension, and set tracking with the oscillation running so the belt swings evenly between the limit sensors. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed. For a size not on the site, we convert custom belts in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Do not skip grits on a single-head machine. It is tempting to jump 60 to 150 to save a belt change; the 60 scratch will show through the stain. Step one grade at a time, or at most skip one: 60, 80, 120, 180, 220.
- Keep the pass light and the feed fast. 1/64 to 1/32 inch per pass at 36 to 60 grit on hardwood, less as grit gets finer. Slow feed burns cherry and maple.
- Give zirconia pressure. It only stays sharp when it fractures. Use it for the calibrating pass and switch to aluminum oxide for surfacing and finishing.
- Watch loading on plastics and carbon fiber. Resin packs the grain fast. Run maximum dust extraction, take shallow passes, and clean the belt with a crepe-rubber belt eraser as soon as the cut slows.
- Clean wood belts too. Most aluminum oxide belts that look worn out are loaded, and a belt eraser held lightly on the running belt restores most of the cut.
- Handle paper belts gently. No creases, no nicked edges, inspect before mounting.
- Store spares hanging on a rack, off the floor, out of humidity and sunlight, and let a cold belt warm up before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
What does heat-treated grain mean and why does it matter on a 52-inch belt?
Heat treating toughens aluminum oxide and zirconia grain so it resists breaking down prematurely under load. A 52-inch belt on a wide belt sander carries a lot of pressure across its width, and tougher grain keeps its cutting edges longer before it needs changing, which is the difference between a belt that does a shift and one that does a day.
Can I sand carbon fiber and plastics with these belts?
Yes, with the cloth aluminum oxide. Use 80 to 220 grit, shallow passes and strong dust extraction, and wear respiratory protection for carbon dust. The resin loads the belt faster than wood does, so clean it with a belt eraser as soon as the cut slows. Keep paper belts off composites; the backing does not tolerate the heat and loading.
What is the most common grit sequence for wood on this machine?
80, then 120, then 180 for the last pass. That is what most shops run through a single-head 52" x 86-1/2" machine on planed cabinet stock, and it produces a stain-ready surface. Start at 36 or 60 only if the stock is rough or glued up, and never skip more than one grit, or the coarse scratch shows under the finish.
When is paper A/O the better buy than cloth A/O?
For finishing grits on wood, 120 through 400, on a machine with smooth platen edges. Paper is stiffer, which helps flatness, and it costs less per belt. Cloth is the better buy for anything coarser than 120, for any metal or composite work, and for older machines whose rollers or platen edges are rough enough to nick a paper belt.
Will an 86-inch or 87-inch belt fit a machine that lists 86-1/2?
Usually not well. Most wide belt sanders tolerate about a quarter inch of length either way, and a half inch is at or beyond that limit; the belt may not tension fully or may trip the tracking limit. Order the 86-1/2 inch belt your size plate calls for, or tell us the exact measurement and we will cut it.
Is zirconia worth it for a shop that mostly sands wood?
Only for the calibrating belt. Zirconia at 36 to 60 grit holds its edge through glue lines, knots and end grain long after aluminum oxide has rounded over, so it earns its cost on the first pass over rough or glued-up hardwood. For surfacing and finishing, aluminum oxide cuts cleaner and is the better value.
