Silicon carbide is the grain glass shops run because it stays sharp on glass where aluminum oxide dulls in seconds. These 5" pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) discs put that grain on a cloth backing that survives wet grinding, so you can seam, flat-grind and bevel edges under water without the disc delaminating. The ungritted cork disc is the final stage: charge it with cerium oxide and it takes a 400–800 grit edge to a clear polish.
Sold as a box of 50 with no arbor hole, they stick to any smooth 5" PSA backing plate on a wet disc sander, edging head or pneumatic disc sander. The same discs also cut stone, solid surface, acrylic, fiberglass and concrete, and leave a finer scratch than aluminum oxide on wood.

Which material and grit should you choose?
Pick the disc by the stage of the edge, not by habit. Every grit in the range has a job.
- Silicon carbide 50–80 grit: seaming raw cut edges, removing chips and score marks, shaping a pencil or flat edge. Start here on fresh-cut float glass.
- Silicon carbide 100–150 grit: taking out the 60–80 scratch and truing the edge. Skipping this step is why polished edges show "ghost" scratches.
- Silicon carbide 180–220 grit: the standard stopping point for a seamed or satin edge that will not be polished.
- Silicon carbide 320–400 grit: a smooth matte edge and the minimum you should reach before cork polishing.
- Silicon carbide 600–800 grit: pre-polish. An 800 grit edge polishes faster on cork and hides fewer defects.
- Ungritted cork: the polishing disc. It has no abrasive of its own; run it wet with cerium oxide (or pumice for a cheaper pre-polish) to bring the edge to clear.
For stone and quartz, start at 60–80 and stop at 220–400 before switching to your polishing pads. For acrylic and polycarbonate, 120 → 220 → 400 then flame-polish or buff. For fiberglass fairing, 50–80 to knock down, 120–220 to finish.

What machines and pads does a 5" PSA no-hole disc fit?
- Wet disc sanders and flat glass edging heads with a smooth 5" steel, aluminum or phenolic PSA plate. No arbor hole means full coverage across the plate with no dead spot at the centre.
- Pneumatic and electric 5" disc sanders fitted with a PSA (sticky-back) pad rather than hook-and-loop.
- Stained-glass and art-glass grinders and lap wheels that accept a 5" adhesive disc.
- Bench and pedestal disc sanders with a 5" platen, for stone, plastics and composites.
These are PSA, not hook-and-loop. If your pad is hook-and-loop you need a PSA conversion pad or a plain-faced plate. Mounting: clean the plate with solvent, peel the liner, lay the disc from the centre outward and press flat. Discs are single-use once removed; the adhesive will not re-stick reliably.
How to get the most out of them
- Run wet on glass. A steady water feed keeps the edge below the temperature where micro-checks form, floats away the swarf that would otherwise scratch the surface, and controls silica dust. If you must sand dry, wear a properly fitted respirator.
- Let the grain cut. Pressure chips glass and glazes silicon carbide. Use the weight of the work and keep it moving across the disc face.
- Work the whole face. Sweep the edge across the disc instead of parking it on one ring so the disc wears evenly and stays flat.
- Never skip more than one grit. The polish step only removes the previous scratch pattern; anything deeper shows as a haze or line in the finished edge.
- Charge cork correctly. Mix cerium oxide to a thin cream, apply to the running cork disc with a brush, keep it damp, and re-charge when the cut slows. Rinse the glass between grits so coarse particles never reach the cork.
- Rinse and dry between grits on stone and quartz for the same reason, and change water when it clouds.

Frequently asked questions
Can these 5" glass sanding discs be used wet?
Yes. The silicon carbide grain is bonded to a cloth backing rather than paper, so the disc holds together under a continuous water feed. Wet grinding is the recommended way to run them on glass and stone: it keeps the edge cool, prevents micro-chipping, and controls silica dust.
Why silicon carbide instead of aluminum oxide for glass?
Silicon carbide is harder and sharper than aluminum oxide and fractures into fresh cutting points as it works. Glass is harder than most metals, so aluminum oxide grain rounds over almost immediately and starts rubbing and heating the edge instead of cutting. Silicon carbide keeps cutting cleanly through the whole grit range.
What is the cork disc for and does it come with compound?
The cork disc is the polishing stage. It carries no abrasive grain; you charge it with cerium oxide (or pumice) mixed with water and run it wet after a 400–800 grit silicon carbide pass to bring the glass edge to a clear polish. Compound is sold separately.
Which grit gives a satin or seamed edge on glass?
A seamed or satin edge is normally finished at 180–220 grit. Start at 50–80 to remove chips and shape, step through 100–150, and stop at 220 for an even matte edge. If the edge will be polished, keep going to 400 or 800 before the cork disc.
Will a 5" PSA disc with no hole fit a hook-and-loop sander?
Not directly. PSA discs need a smooth pad or plate to stick to. If your sander has a hook-and-loop pad, fit a PSA conversion pad or swap to a plain-faced 5" backing plate. The no-hole design suits wet disc sanders and edging heads with solid PSA plates.
Can I use these on stone, plastic or concrete?
Yes. Silicon carbide is the standard grain for granite, marble, quartz, solid surface, acrylic, fiberglass, concrete and terrazzo. Use the same wet technique and grit progression as glass, and finish with your normal polishing pads or compound for that material.
