Which 4" x 90" belt should you choose?
Buy by material, then confirm the machine can supply the pressure the grain needs.
- Zirconia: mild and carbon steel, weld beads, plasma dross and heavy removal on plate and tube. The grain micro-fractures under moderate-to-heavy pressure to expose fresh edges, so it stays sharp as long as you lean on it. Stocked 24 through 120 on a Y-weight polyester-cotton backing, wet or dry.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): the same zirconia with a topical grinding aid applied over the one in the resin bond. The added lubricant lowers heat at the contact line, so stainless does not heat-tint and aluminum does not pack the belt. Our pick for stainless in the coarse grits. Y-weight polyester, wet or dry.
- Ceramic (Shredder): the orange-red belt for stainless, hardened steel, tool steel and high-alloy material. Continuous renewal of the cutting edges gives faster, cooler stock removal than zirconia and holds that rate for most of the belt's life. Needs a rigid platen and firm pressure.
- Cloth A/O: aluminum, brass, copper, wood, plastics and every grit above 120. Aluminum oxide is the lowest-cost belt, cuts cleanly at light pressure and gives the most even finish, which is why the 150 through 600 belts in this size are aluminum oxide. Poly-cotton cloth, wet or dry.
Grit availability differs by grain; the selector shows what is stocked. Three belts per pack suits a shop that keeps one coarse and one fine belt on the rack and one on the machine.

What machines take a 4" x 90" belt?
We have not verified specific models against the 4" x 90" size, so confirm the belt size in your manual before ordering. This length is found on:
- 4" oscillating edge sanders, the floor-standing machines used in millwork and fabrication shops for straight and curved edges.
- Long-bed belt grinders and deburring machines built around a 4" wide belt with a platen and end drum.
- Compact stroke sanders that run a 4" belt between two drums.
Mounting: release tension, slide the belt over both drums grain side out, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way, re-tension, then turn the belt by hand and adjust tracking until it rides centered on the platen. Re-check tracking after the first minute under load; long belts settle. Other 4" lengths are made to order in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Give the coarse grains pressure. Zirconia and ceramic dull if run lightly; press firmly and keep the part moving so the grain keeps fracturing.
- Work welds in steps. 24 or 36 to take the bead flush, 60 to 80 to blend, 120 to remove the coarse scratch, then 180 to 220 in aluminum oxide if the part is going to paint.
- Keep stainless below tint temperature. Use Zirconia+ or ceramic, take steady passes and never dwell; quench when the part gets too hot to hold.
- Lubricate aluminum with a grease stick on the running belt or run the belt wet where the machine allows it. Start no coarser than 60 unless removing a heavy casting edge.
- Use the full 4" width. Grooving at the table line shortens belt life and leaves a step in your edges.
- Use the oscillation if the machine has it, and keep dust extraction running; a loaded belt is the usual reason a long belt seems to wear early. Clean aluminum oxide belts with a crepe belt eraser.
- Never share a collector between wood and steel. Sparks in fine wood dust are a fire risk.
- Store belts hanging in their coil, away from humidity, and let a cold belt warm up before running it.

What is the advantage of a 4" x 90" belt over a 3" belt on an edge sander?
Width. A 4" x 90" belt puts a full inch more abrasive against the platen, so plate edges and tube faces up to 4" are covered in a single pass with no overlap line, and the load is spread over more grain so each belt lasts longer. If your machine is built for a 4" belt, do not fit a narrower one; it will track poorly.
Which 4" x 90" belt should I use to prep steel for paint?
Remove scale and weld beads with zirconia at 36 or 60, blend at 80 to 120, then finish at 150 to 220 in Cloth A/O. That leaves a uniform scratch that primer keys into without telegraphing coarse marks through the top coat. Wipe the part clean of grinding dust before priming.
Which belt is right for tool steel and hardened parts?
Ceramic. Hardened steel blunts aluminum oxide quickly and dulls zirconia unless the pressure is high; ceramic's grain renews its own cutting edges and removes stock faster and cooler for most of its life. It only pays off on a rigid machine that lets you apply firm pressure, so on a light edge sander use Zirconia+ instead.
Can I run a 4" x 90" belt wet on my edge sander?
Every grain in this size is on a poly-cotton or Y-weight polyester backing that tolerates water and coolant, so the belt itself is fine wet. Whether the machine is depends on its motor and bearings; most woodworking edge sanders are dry-only, while purpose-built wet belt grinders are not. Check your manual.
Why do these belts come three to a pack?
A 4" x 90" belt is a long, expensive strip of cloth, and most shops run one grit at a time on an edge sander, so three of one grit covers the machine plus two spares. Order a second pack in a finer grit for the finishing pass. Case quantities and mixed-grit pricing are available on request.
How should I store long belts so they track properly?
Hang them or keep them loosely coiled in the box they arrived in, away from damp and direct sun. A belt stored folded or squashed takes a set in the cloth that shows up as wandering on the drums. Let a belt that has been in a cold shop come up to room temperature before mounting it.
