A 4" x 106" belt is a long-bed edge sander size: just under nine feet of belt running over a platen on machines that oscillate the belt up and down while you push a door edge, a face frame or a stair tread along the fence. The same loop turns up on small stroke sanders and on 4" metal fabrication belt heads. We convert these belts in Anaheim, California on poly-cotton cloth with a closed coat, and stock them in Aluminum Oxide for wood, Silicon Carbide for plastics, solid surface and non-ferrous metal, and Zirconia for steel and heavy stock removal.
All three grains can be run wet or dry. Three belts per pack, 36 through 400 grit, so a typical 80, 120, 180 edge-sanding set costs one order.

Which 4" x 106" belt material should you choose?
Most 4" x 106" machines are woodworking edge sanders, so aluminum oxide is the default. The other two grains cover the materials that give aluminum oxide trouble.
- Aluminum Oxide: heat-treated grain, closed coat, on poly-cotton cloth. The right belt for solid wood edges, face frames, plywood and MDF edges, and general shop work. It cuts cleanly at light pressure and lasts longest on wood. Stock 80, 120 and 150 or 180. Offered 36 through 400.
- Silicon Carbide: harder and sharper than aluminum oxide, with the finest scratch. Choose it for solid surface, acrylic, laminate edges, fiberglass, aluminum and brass, and for the last pass under a clear finish. It wears fast on steel. Glass shops should look at our dedicated 4" x 106" glass fabrication belts, which are built and packed for wet glass edging.
- Zirconia: a self-sharpening grain for mild steel, weld dressing and heavy removal on hardwood at 36 to 60. It needs firm pressure, so it is wrong for veneer and finishing. Offered 36 through 120.
A cabinet shop should buy Aluminum Oxide. A shop that also runs solid surface or aluminum should add Silicon Carbide from 120 up. Keep one Zirconia 36 or 40 if you flatten rough stock on the edge sander.

Never skip more than one grit. On an edge sander, the finer belt only removes the previous scratch pattern; a 40 grit scratch under a 180 finish shows up the moment stain hits it.
What machines take a 4" x 106" belt?
- Oscillating edge sanders with a 4" wide belt and long platen, the standard cabinet-shop machine for door and frame edges, drawer fronts and curved work on the end drum.
- Small horizontal stroke sanders built around a 106" loop.
- 4" metal fabrication belt heads used for plate edges and deburring; use a dedicated metal-rated collector or wet collection.
Confirm the length on the size plate or manual, or measure the circumference of a belt that fits. The tension drum only travels a few inches, so order the exact length; we also stock 4" x 120" and 4" x 132", and any other 4" length can be converted to order.
Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow and run it that way. Release tension, slide the belt on, tension, rotate by hand, centre the tracking, then power up and fine-tune. Let the oscillation settle before you bring work to the platen.
How to get the most out of it
- Feed steadily, do not park. Hold the edge flat against the fence and platen and keep it moving along the belt. A door stopped against a running belt burns and hollows in seconds.
- Light pressure on wood. Aluminum oxide cuts with the weight of the part. Leaning in heats the belt, glazes the grain and burns maple and cherry.
- Use the oscillation. Let the machine's vertical oscillation spread wear across the belt; if your machine does not oscillate, vary the table height so one band of grain is not doing all the work.
- Curves on the end drum, flats on the platen. The unsupported belt over the drum follows curves; the platen keeps edges square.
- Clean before you change. Pitch and finish dust pack an aluminum oxide belt long before it wears. A crepe-rubber belt eraser held against the running belt restores the cut.
- Separate wood and metal belts. A belt that has done aluminum or steel leaves grey marks on stain-grade wood. Mark the spare.
- Hang spares. Store belts over a large peg, out of sun and humidity, and let cold belts warm to shop temperature before mounting.

Which grits should a cabinet shop keep for edge sanding?

Is this silicon carbide belt the same as your 4" x 106" glass fabrication belt?
No. This listing is a general-purpose silicon carbide cloth belt for solid surface, plastics, laminate and non-ferrous metal, sold three to a pack. Our 4" x 106" glass fabrication belts are built and packed specifically for wet glass edging in production glass shops, with cork belts available in the same size for polishing.
Can I edge-sand plywood and veneered panels with these belts?
Yes, with aluminum oxide at 120 grit or finer and light pressure. Veneer faces are thin, so keep the part moving, let the platen do the work and avoid tipping the panel into the belt. Do not use zirconia on veneered stock; it removes too much too fast and tears the face.
Can the 4" x 106" belts be run wet?
Yes. The poly-cotton cloth backing can be run wet or dry, which suits machines with water or mist cooling for solid surface, stone or aluminum. Woodworking edge sanders are not built for water, so keep those dry and rely on light pressure and dust extraction instead.
How many belts per pack, and can you make other 4" lengths?
