Production finishing lines run 103-inch belts for a reason: the longer loop spends more of each revolution away from the part, so it sheds heat, holds its cut longer between changes and keeps a stainless sheet from tinting at production feed rates. These 37" x 103" metalworking belts are built for those machines, with ceramic for stainless and hardened steel, zirconia with a grinding aid for mild steel and general fabrication, and cloth aluminum oxide for aluminum and for every finishing grit from 150 through 600.
Each grain is coated on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth that holds its length on a long belt path and runs wet or dry. We convert them in Anaheim, California and pack them in twos so a line can keep a spare of each running grit on the rack.

Which grain belongs on which head of a metal finishing line?
On a single-head machine you change belts between stages; on a multi-head line each head carries one grain and grit. Either way the logic is the same: fracturing grains for removal, aluminum oxide for finish.
- Ceramic (orange-red belt): the first-head grain for 304 and 316 stainless, hardened steel, tool steel and heavy plate. Ceramic renews its cutting edges continuously, holds a near-constant rate through its life and removes stock cooler than zirconia, which matters most at production feed rates where dwell is not an option. It needs steady pressure to keep fracturing. Stocked 24, 36, 40, 60, 80 and 120 grit.
- Zirconia (green or blue belt): the first-head grain for mild steel, A36 plate, tube and weldments, and the cooler choice on stainless when the head cannot load ceramic. Ours has a grinding aid in the resin bond and a second one coated on top that lubricates the cut and reduces loading. Stocked 24, 36, 40, 50, 60, 80, 100 and 120 grit.
- Cloth A/O (brown belt): heat-treated aluminum oxide on the same poly-cotton cloth. The finishing head grain on every metal and the only grain in this listing at 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600. It is also the correct grain for aluminum sheet and plate, brass and copper at any grit.
A common two-head stainless setup is ceramic 80 or 120 on the first head and cloth AO 180 or 220 on the second, followed by a surface conditioning belt. Not every grain is stocked in every grit; the selector shows the live combinations.

Between heads, never skip more than one grade; a second head at 220 will not remove a first-head 60 scratch. On aluminum, start at 60–80, keep belt speed down and finish at 120–220 before a non-woven belt.
What machines take a 37" x 103" belt?

Width must match exactly. Length tolerance on most wide belt machines is about plus or minus a quarter inch, and the tracking oscillation centres the belt in that window. We have not verified specific model numbers for this size, so confirm the belt dimensions on your machine plate or in the manual. If your machine calls for a different length, we make 37-inch wide belts to order in about three days. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way if one is printed.
How to get the most out of them
- Dedicated metal collection. Steel sparks or fine aluminum in a collector that holds wood dust are a fire risk. Run a metal-rated collector with a spark arrestor, or wet collection, on any head that runs these belts.
- Match belt speed to the metal. Run steel and stainless at full belt speed with real pressure so ceramic and zirconia fracture and stay sharp; slow the belt for aluminum and use cloth AO or the grinding-aid zirconia with a grease stick when it loads.
- Keep the feed constant. On a long belt a feed change shows as a band across the sheet, and a stop under the head blues stainless in seconds.
- Drum head for removal, platen head for finish. Coarse grits on the contact drum, 150 and finer on the platen for a flat, uniform scratch.
- Change belts on cut rate, not on looks. A ceramic belt keeps cutting until it is spent, then heats the part quickly. Track amp draw or removal per pass and change before the finish suffers.
- Run wet where the line allows. The poly-cotton backing tolerates coolant, and a wet head reduces tint and airborne dust.
- Store 103-inch belts hanging on a wide peg or roller, never folded, away from humidity and sunlight; let cold belts warm before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
Why do 37" x 103" belts last longer on metal than shorter belts of the same width?
A 103-inch loop has more grain surface and spends more of each revolution away from the part, so each grain cools between contacts and the belt as a whole wears more slowly. On stainless that also means less heat tint at production feed rates. Belt length is fixed by your machine; buy the length on the plate.
Which grain goes on the first head of a stainless finishing line?
Ceramic, at 80 or 120 grit for sheet with light scale, or 40–60 if the parts carry weld or laser dross. Ceramic keeps a constant cut and runs cooler than zirconia under steady pressure. Put cloth aluminum oxide at 180 or 220 on the second head, then a surface conditioning belt.
Can I run mild steel and stainless on the same 37" x 103" belt?
You can run both metals with either ceramic or zirconia, but many shops keep separate belts to avoid carrying free iron from carbon steel into stainless work, which can cause rust spotting later. If the line runs both, run stainless first on a fresh belt or dedicate belts by metal.
Are these belts available in every grit for every grain?
No. Ceramic is stocked 24, 36, 40, 60, 80 and 120; zirconia 24 through 120 including 50 and 100; cloth aluminum oxide from 24 through 600. All 150, 180, 220, 320, 400 and 600 grit belts are aluminum oxide. The selector shows current stock, and we can make other combinations to order.
Can these belts run wet on a coolant-fed line?
Yes. All three grains are on a Y-weight polyester-cotton cloth built to run wet or dry, so they suit coolant-fed graining and deburring heads as well as dry heads with metal-rated collection. Wet running keeps stainless cooler and keeps aluminum from loading the belt.
How should I store a 103-inch belt?
Hang it on a wide peg or roller so the cloth stays in a smooth loop; never fold it or leave it on the floor, or the cloth takes a set that shows as a bump at the joint. Keep belts away from humidity and direct sun, and let a cold belt reach room temperature before mounting.
How many belts per pack and do you supply lines in case quantity?
