1-1/2" x 30" Metalworking Sanding Belts, 24 PACK
1-1/2" x 30" Metalworking Sanding Belts, 24 PACK
Available in stock (49998)
Compact bench belt sanders and small belt grinders that run a 1-1/2" x 30" belt are the machines hobby knife makers, gunsmiths and small machine shops use for bevels, tangs, deburring and tool work. These 1-1/2" x 30" metalworking belts bring the four metal grains from our larger grinder belts down to that size: ceramic, zirconia, Zirconia+ with a grinding aid and cloth A/O, from 24 grit stock removal to 600 grit edge finishing.
The 24-pack keeps a full progression on the bench for the price of a few loose belts, and every belt is converted in Anaheim, California. The half inch of extra width over a 1" x 30" belt gives a flatter bevel and a slower-wearing belt on the same class of machine.
- Ceramic, zirconia, Zirconia+ grinding aid and cloth A/O in one 1-1/2" x 30" size
- 24 through 600 grit: profile, set bevels, refine and finish on one machine
- Y-weight poly-cotton under the metal grains handles firm hand pressure without stretching
- Grinding-aid option keeps thin blades and stainless cool on a small motor
- 24 belts per pack so a full grit ladder stays stocked
- Converted in Anaheim, California; free shipping on orders over $200
Which grain should you run on a 1-1/2" x 30" bench sander?
Small machines have small motors, so the grain choice is as much about horsepower as it is about the metal. A 1-1/2" belt puts your hand pressure onto a narrow contact patch, which helps the self-sharpening grains fracture the way they should.
- Ceramic: orange-red grain for hardened and high-carbon blade steels, stainless and tool steel when you are willing to lean into the belt. It cuts fastest and lasts longest of the four, but only when loaded; stroke it lightly and it glazes and heats the part. Best for profiling and hogging bevels in the coarse grits.
- Zirconia: green or blue grain for mild and carbon steel, general deburring and shaping. It self-sharpens at moderate pressure, costs less than ceramic, and is stocked in the 24–120 band where zirconia belongs.
- Zirconia+ (Grinding Aid): zirconia with a lubricating top coat over the resin bond. Choose it for stainless, thin blades and tangs that heat up fast, and for aluminum and other metals that load a plain belt. On a low-power sander it is often the better coarse grain because the lower friction keeps it cutting.
- Cloth A/O: brown aluminum oxide on poly-cotton. The grain for aluminum, brass and copper, for handle materials, and for every grit from 150 through 600 where you refine a bevel or finish an edge. It cuts predictably at light pressure where the tougher grains stall.
Grit guide for blades, tools and small parts
| Grit | Use it for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 24–36 | Profiling blanks, hogging bevels, heavy stock | Ceramic; firm pressure, dip often |
| 40–60 | Setting bevels, shaping tangs, deburring | Ceramic or zirconia on steel, Zirconia+ on stainless |
| 80–120 | Refining bevels, removing coarse scratch, chamfers | Last metal-grain step; go to A/O next |
| 150–220 | Pre-finish, hand-sanding prep, handle shaping | Cloth A/O, moderate pressure |
| 320–400 | Fine bevel work, sharpening, deburring | Cloth A/O, light pressure, edge trailing |
| 600 | Edge finishing before strop, buff or cork | Cloth A/O; slowest speed available |
On hardened blades, never let the edge change colour: use a fresh belt, dip in water between passes and slow the machine for thin edges if it has variable speed. On aluminum start no coarser than 60, rub a grease stick on the running belt and finish at 120–220.
What machines take a 1-1/2" x 30" belt?
- Compact bench belt sanders and belt/disc combination sanders whose manual specifies a 1-1/2" x 30" belt. This is a wider cousin of the common 1" x 30" hobby sander, so check the width on the old belt or the platen before ordering.
- Small belt grinders built or bought for knife making on a budget, where a 30" loop keeps the footprint small.
- Tool sharpening stations for chisels, plane irons, turning tools and kitchen knives.
A 1" x 30" machine will not track a 1-1/2" belt: the platen and wheels are too narrow and the belt will ride off one side. If your machine is a 1" x 30", use our 1" x 30" metalworking belts instead. Look for a direction arrow inside the belt before mounting, use the platen for flat bevels and the slack section for curves, and keep sparks away from anything that burns.
How to get the most out of it
- Press hard on ceramic and zirconia, light on A/O. The metal grains need load to fracture and stay sharp; aluminum oxide just needs to be kept moving.
- Dip constantly on blades. Heat travels fast in a thin bevel. Grind a pass, dip, grind a pass. If the steel colours, the temper is gone in that spot.
- Use the whole belt. Move the part across the 1-1/2" width so a groove does not form in the middle of the belt.
- Change grits before the scratch gets deep. A dull coarse belt digs deeper, not shallower; swap to a fresh belt or the next grit as soon as the cut slows.
- Sharpen edge-trailing on the fine A/O belts so the belt runs away from the edge, and use only enough pressure to raise a burr.
- Clean and store. A crepe belt eraser clears loaded A/O and Zirconia+ belts. Keep the pack hanging or loosely rolled in a dry place; folded cloth belts take a set.
Use it for / don't use it for
Use it for
- Profiling and bevelling knife blanks in carbon, stainless and tool steel
- Shaping tangs, guards, bolsters and small hardware
- Deburring and chamfering small machined and laser-cut parts
- Sharpening chisels, plane irons, lathe tools and kitchen knives (fine A/O grits)
- Fitting handle scales in wood, G10 and Micarta with cloth A/O
Don't use it for
- Ceramic at feather-light pressure; it glazes and puts heat into the blade
- Machines that take a 1" x 30" belt; the width will not track
- Zirconia or Zirconia+ above 120 grit when you want a finish; switch to cloth A/O
- Glass, stone or tile, which need silicon carbide

Frequently asked questions
Can I run ceramic belts on a small 1-1/2" x 30" bench sander?
Yes, with a caveat. Ceramic needs pressure to keep fracturing, and a small sander cannot supply much of it on its own, so you have to lean in. The narrow 1-1/2" belt helps because it concentrates your hand pressure. Use ceramic for coarse profiling and bevel setting; if the belt glazes or the steel colours, switch to Zirconia+ for that job.
Will a 1-1/2" x 30" belt fit a 1" x 30" sander?
No. The two sizes share a length but not a width, and a 1" x 30" machine's wheels and platen are too narrow to track a 1-1/2" belt; it will walk off the side. Measure the old belt or the platen. If your machine is a 1" x 30", order our 1" x 30" metalworking belts instead.
What grit progression should I use for a knife bevel on this size?
On a 1-1/2" x 30" sander, profile and rough the bevel with ceramic 36 or 40, set the bevel with ceramic or Zirconia+ 60, refine with 120, then move to cloth A/O 220 and 400 to remove the coarse scratch. Finish at 600 before hand sanding, stropping or a cork belt. Dip in water between every pass.
When should I choose Zirconia+ over plain zirconia?
Choose Zirconia+ when heat or loading is the problem: stainless blades, thin tangs, aluminum and brass, or a sander that bogs down. The grinding-aid top coat lubricates the cut so the part runs cooler and chips clear instead of packing into the belt. For mild steel deburring and general shaping, plain zirconia does the same work for less.
Can these belts be used wet?
Yes. The ceramic, zirconia and Zirconia+ belts are on Y-weight polyester-cotton and the cloth A/O is on poly-cotton, so all four can be run wet or dry. Most bench sanders are not set up for coolant, so in practice that means dipping the part in water between passes rather than running a drip on the belt.
Are these 1-1/2" x 30" belts good for handle material as well as steel?
The cloth A/O belts are. Use 80 to shape wood, G10, Micarta and stabilized scales, 150 to 220 to refine, and 320 to 400 before hand finishing. Keep the ceramic and zirconia belts for steel; their coarse, aggressive cut tears out wood fibre and heats resin-based handle materials.
How many belts come in the pack?
Each pack contains 24 belts of one grain and one grit, so a typical bench set is three or four packs across the progression.
