Quick answer: J-weight is the lightest, most flexible cloth backing used on sanding belts. It bends around contours, works on slack-belt and small-wheel grinders, and leaves an even finish – which is why knife makers use it for handles and finishing bevels. X-weight is the standard, stiffer cloth for most belts, and Y-weight is the heaviest, for coarse grits and high-pressure grinding. Choose J for flexibility and finish, X for general work, Y for stock removal.
Why the backing matters
The abrasive grain gets the attention, but the backing under it decides how a belt behaves. The right backing and weight gives you a clean result and a much longer belt life. The wrong one tears, creases, burns the work, or refuses to follow a curve. Backing weight is about thickness and stiffness: heavier backings take more pressure and last longer under load; lighter ones flex.

A through F are all paper; J, X and Y are cloth. Polyester cloth is stronger and water-resistant; cotton is more flexible. Most X-weight is a blend for a bit of both.
J-weight belts
J-weight belts use a light, tightly woven cloth that's sturdy and durable yet flexible enough to wrap around rounded surfaces and edges. That combination makes them a favorite for:
- Knife handles and contoured parts – the belt follows the curve instead of flattening it.
- Slack-belt grinding – running the belt between wheels with no platen so it conforms to the work. J-weight is the backing made for this.
- Small contact wheels – a stiff belt fights a small radius; J bends around it.
- Finishing – J-weight belts in 120–400 grit leave an even, consistent scratch pattern on blades, and are ideal on plastics, wood and painted surfaces where a stiff belt would dig in.
Where J-weight is the wrong choice is heavy stock removal on a flat platen: the flexible backing gives under pressure, cuts slower and wears faster than X or Y. Grind bevels with a ceramic Y-weight belt, then switch to J-weight for the finish and the handle.
X-weight belts
X-weight is the all-rounder and what most of our sanding belts are made on. Stiff enough for stock removal on a platen, flexible enough for a contact wheel, and available in every grain and grit. For woodworking, metalworking and general fabrication, start here.
Y-weight belts
Y-weight is a heavy, full-polyester cloth that doesn't stretch or tear under pressure. It's the backing under ceramic and zirconia belts in coarse grits, for surface grinding, weld removal and any job where you lean on the belt. It won't follow tight contours – that's the trade-off.
