Hazy, weathered aluminum wheels come back with three tools: a Surface Prep disc to cut the oxidation, a satin airway buff to blend the lines the disc leaves, and cotton airway buffs with compound to bring up the shine. This is the middle tool in a size you can hold. The 2-ply satin airway buff is built from non-woven, abrasive-loaded pleats instead of treated cotton, so it feathers cut lines into a uniform satin comparable to a 320 or 400 grit finish, with no compound, on a hand-held polisher.
We make it in 8 Inch, 9 Inch and 10 Inch diameters, with a Center Plate or No Center Plate for insertable flanges. Mobile wheel polishers, truck and trailer detailers and restoration shops run it on a 7" variable-speed polisher between the Buff and Blend disc and the Orange and Yellow airway buffing wheels. Which size and mounting should you choose?
The three diameters are the same 2-Ply satin wheel; pick by the shape of the work and how long you want the wheel to last.
- 8 Inch: the most maneuverable. Gets into wheel windows, between spokes and around lug areas, and is the easiest to control on a polisher for a first-time user.
- 9 Inch: the compromise for someone doing both wheels and flat aluminum, with more cloth to wear before it drops to 8".
- 10 Inch: the most working depth and the fastest coverage on truck tanks, trailer panels and tool boxes. Many operators buy 10" and simply keep using it as it wears down to 9" and 8".
- 2-Ply: the only ply we offer in this wheel. Two layers of web give the pleats enough body to hold their shape when you edge buff, which a single ply will not do on a hand-held machine.
- Center Plate: ships with a steel center plate fitted, ready to clamp on the spindle. Confirm the plate bore against your machine with us before ordering.
- No Center Plate: an open clinch ring for insertable safety flanges. Choose this if you already own flanges for your no-plate airway buffs so one set of flanges serves every wheel.
Satin buff, Buff and Blend disc or cotton airway: which does what?
Buyers often ask whether they need all three. On a wheel that has been outside for years, yes. Each one does a job the others cannot.

If the wheel is only lightly hazed and has never been cut with a disc, you can start with the satin buff and go straight to the Orange wheel. If the customer wants a brushed look rather than a mirror, the satin buff is the last tool you use.
What machines run an 8", 9" or 10" satin airway buff?
- 7" variable-speed polishers that can be dialed down. This is the primary machine for the wheel, and the reason is speed: the satin wheel is rated for no more than 2,200 RPM, and a polisher with a speed dial is the only hand-held machine that will hold that.
- Angle grinders with electronic speed control set to their lowest range. A single-speed grinder running at full rated speed is too fast for a non-woven wheel; it will heat the part, glaze and shed.
- Bench buffers and pedestal polishers with speed control, for wheel faces and small parts brought to the bench.
Match the mounting to the machine: the Center Plate version clamps between the machine's flanges, and the No Center Plate version needs insertable safety flanges. For lathes and backstands, use the 14" satin airway buff instead.
How to get the most out of it
- Set the speed first. Dial the polisher to its low range and stay at or below 2,200 RPM. Run within the buff's rated speed for your machine.
- Run it dry. The abrasive is in the web. Compound on a satin wheel only loads the pleats and smears.
- Edge buff. On a polisher you work with the rim of the wheel, not the face. Hold the machine so the edge of the wheel meets the part below the center line and the wheel pulls across the surface away from you.
- Light pressure, constant motion. Let the web do the work and keep the wheel moving in one direction so the satin grain is consistent. Pressure tears the web and dwell leaves a low spot that shows after color.
- Blend the whole panel, including areas you did not cut with the disc, so there is no visible edge between satin and untouched metal when the compound wheels go on.
- Wipe the part before switching to the Orange wheel so no satin debris rides onto the tripoli.
- Protect yourself. Face shield, gloves and a respirator; a non-woven wheel throws fine fiber and metal dust, and edge buffing sends it toward you.

Frequently asked questions
Can I really run this satin airway buff on an angle grinder?
Only on one with speed control that can be held at or below 2,200 RPM. Most single-speed grinders run several times faster than that, which overheats a non-woven wheel and glazes it. A 7" variable-speed polisher is the machine most of our customers use; it mounts the wheel the same way and holds the low speed the satin wheel needs.
Why is this wheel 2-Ply?
Because it is edge buffed on a hand-held machine. Two layers of non-woven web give the pleats enough body to stay square when only the rim is touching the part. A thinner wheel folds over and leaves an uneven satin. 2-Ply is the only construction we offer in the 8", 9" and 10" satin airway buff.
Which size should I buy for polishing aluminum wheels?
For wheels, the 8 Inch is the easiest to get between spokes and into windows. If you also do tanks and flat aluminum, the 10 Inch covers panels faster and wears down to 8" over its life, so many operators buy 10" and use it for both. The 9 Inch splits the difference.
Does the satin buff replace sanding before polishing?
It replaces the fine sanding step on metal that has already been cut clean. It leaves a surface comparable to 320 or 400 grit and blends out the straight lines a Buff and Blend disc leaves. It does not remove pits, corrosion or heavy oxidation; those still have to be cut with a disc first.
Do I need safety flanges with this wheel?
With the No Center Plate version, yes: insertable safety flanges are the only correct way to mount an open-ring buff, and they are required on a grinder or polisher. The Center Plate version clamps directly between the machine's flanges. Confirm the plate bore against your spindle with us before ordering.
Will it work on stainless steel or plated parts?
On stainless, yes. It blends cut lines before the Red airway buff and black stainless bar, and on its own gives a brushed satin finish. On plated or anodized parts, test in a hidden spot first: the wheel carries abrasive and will cut through a thin coating. It is at its best on solid aluminum, stainless and steel.
How is this different from the 14" satin airway buff?
Same non-woven satin construction and the same 2,200 RPM limit; the difference is size and machine. The 8", 9" and 10" wheels are for hand-held polishers and grinders with speed control. The 14" wheel is for buffing lathes, backstands and pedestal polishers where the part is brought to the machine.
