An 8" wide edge sander exists for stock that a 6" belt cannot cover in one pass: thick tabletop edges, stair stringers, timber-frame components, bench tops, laminated beams and glued-up blanks sanded on edge. The 107" loop is just under nine feet, the same class of machine as a 4" or 6" long-bed edge sander but with a wider platen and more motor behind it. We convert 8" x 107" belts in Anaheim, California with heat-treated aluminum oxide on poly-cotton cloth, closed coat, because aluminum oxide is the grain that gives the cleanest edge and the longest life on wood.
Three belts per pack in 36 through 180 grit, so a coarse, medium and finish set arrives in one order. The belts can be run wet or dry, and any other 8" length can be made in about three days.

Which 8" x 107" belt grit should you choose?
This size is stocked in one grain, aluminum oxide, so the choice is the grit set. Aluminum oxide is the right grain here: on a woodworking edge sander it cuts steadily under light pressure, does not tear fibres out of hardwood, and outlasts the other grains on wood. Pick the coarsest grit that removes the defect you have, then step through without skipping more than one grade.
- 36 grit: truing rough-sawn or badly cupped edges, taking a glued-up blank down to a line, removing heavy mill marks on timber. Keep the part moving; this grit removes material fast on an 8" face.
- 60 grit: cleaning up the 36 scratch, squaring edges after the saw, levelling glue lines on laminated stock.
- 80 grit: the general-purpose belt that stays on the machine. First pass on most tops, treads and frame parts that come off the jointer or planer.
- 100 and 120 grit: removing the 80 scratch, pre-finish on paint-grade parts, the last belt before hand or orbital sanding on many pieces.
- 150 and 180 grit: the final edge before stain or clear coat on hardwood. Go no finer on an edge sander for stained work.
A typical shop keeps 80 mounted and 120 and 180 hanging, with a 36 or 60 for the rough blanks. If you need zirconia or silicon carbide in this size for metal or plastics, we can convert it to order.

On an edge this wide it is tempting to skip from 60 straight to 150. Do not; the 60 scratch will still be there under a shiny 150 surface and will show as lines when the finish goes on.
What machines take an 8" x 107" belt?
- 8" oscillating edge sanders, the heavy-duty version of the cabinet-shop edge sander, built for thick tops, stair parts, timber framing, laminated beams and boat-building stock.
- Stroke sanders and combination stroke/edge machines built around a 107" loop with an 8" wide platen.
Confirm the length on the machine's size plate or manual, or measure the circumference of a belt that fits. The tension drum only travels a few inches, so order the exact length. If your machine takes a different 8" length, we convert custom sizes in about three days.
Before mounting, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow and run it that way. Release tension, slide the belt over both drums, tension, rotate the belt by hand and adjust tracking so it rides centred on the platen, then power up and fine-tune. An 8" belt has more surface than a 6" belt and shows tracking drift sooner; let the oscillation settle before bringing work to the platen.
How to get the most out of it
- Feed steadily along the full platen. Keep the edge flat on the table and against the fence and move it the whole length of the platen. Stopping, even briefly, hollows the edge and burns the wood.
- Use light pressure. Aluminum oxide cuts with the weight of the part and a little forward pressure. Leaning a heavy blank into the belt heats the grain, glazes it and burns maple, cherry and birch first.
- Use the whole belt height. Oscillation spreads wear vertically; on machines without it, or with thin stock, vary the table height so one band of grain is not doing all the work.
- Blow off between grits. Coarse grit and dust left on the table or part ride under the finer belt and scratch. Clean the table and the part each time you change belts.
- Clean the belt before you change it. Pitch and finish dust pack aluminum oxide long before it wears. A crepe-rubber belt eraser held lightly against the running belt brings the cut back.
- Keep dust extraction strong. An 8" belt on thick stock produces a lot of dust, and a loaded belt is what burns edges. Keep the hood connected and the collector emptied.
- Store spares hanging. A wide cloth belt folded or left on the floor takes a crease that thumps on the platen. Hang belts over a large-diameter peg, out of sunlight and humidity, and let cold belts warm before mounting.

What is an 8" x 107" belt used for?
It fits 8" oscillating edge sanders and stroke sanders that run a 107" loop. Can an 8" x 107" aluminum oxide belt sand steel?
Lightly, yes. Aluminum oxide will deburr and dress mild steel and aluminum, but it wears faster than zirconia under real pressure and the machine must be set up for metal with a separate metal-rated dust collector. For regular steel work in this size, ask us about a custom zirconia belt.
Can these belts be run wet?
The poly-cotton cloth backing tolerates water, so the belt can be run wet on a machine built for coolant. Woodworking edge sanders are not, and water on a wood machine ruins the belt, the table and the platen surface, so on a standard edge sander keep it dry.
How do I confirm the length before ordering?
Check the size plate on the machine or the manual first. If neither is available, measure the full circumference of a belt that fits, or measure around both drums with the tension drum in the middle of its travel. An 8" x 107" belt is just under nine feet around; if your measurement differs by more than an inch or two, order that length instead.
