Just under 18 feet around, a 214" belt sits between the long-bed edge sanders and the full-size stroke sanders, and it is a length we see ordered by shops that run more than one material over the same machine: a countertop fabricator who does solid surface on Monday and hardwood edging on Tuesday, or a fab shop that dresses aluminum plate and then sands the crate it ships in. We convert 6" x 214" belts in Anaheim, California on poly-cotton cloth that can be run wet or dry, in three grains so each material gets the right one.

Which 6" x 214" belt material should you choose?
Pick by the material on the table, not by price. The wrong grain on the wrong material either loads instantly or wears out in a fraction of its life.
- Aluminum Oxide: heat-treated grain, closed coat, poly-cotton cloth. The belt for hardwood, softwood, plywood, MDF and veneer, and a reasonable general-purpose belt for light work on aluminum and mild steel. Most forgiving of the three under light pressure; longest life on wood. Offered 36 through 400.
- Silicon Carbide: the hardest, sharpest grain we offer in this size. It is the correct choice for solid surface (acrylic and polyester sheet), quartz and natural stone edges, acrylic and polycarbonate, fiberglass, laminate, cast iron and non-ferrous metals like aluminum, brass and bronze, and it leaves the finest scratch on any material. Run it wet where the machine allows. It wears fast on steel.
- Zirconia: a tough, self-sharpening grain for mild and carbon steel, weld dressing, plate edges and heavy stock removal on hardwood at 36 to 60. It needs firm pressure to keep fracturing and staying sharp, which makes it wrong for veneer and finishing work. Offered 36 through 120.
A countertop shop should run Silicon Carbide 120 through 400 for solid surface and Aluminum Oxide 80 through 180 for wood edging. A metal shop should run Zirconia 36 through 80 for steel, Silicon Carbide for aluminum, and Aluminum Oxide 120 and finer to blend.

On solid surface the standard matte finish is a 220 silicon carbide belt followed by a fine non-woven pad; for semi-gloss continue to 320 and 400 before polishing. Step one grit at a time; skipped grits show as haze in the polished surface.
What machines take a 6" x 214" belt?
- Mid-size horizontal stroke sanders with drums roughly 8-1/2 feet apart, common in countertop, millwork and furniture shops that do not need a full 27-foot machine.
- Long-bed oscillating edge sanders and combination stroke/edge machines that specify a 214" loop. On these the work rides on a table against the platen side of the belt rather than under a pad.
- Metal fabrication belt sanders built around the same loop for plate edges, deburring and graining. Use a dedicated metal-rated collector or wet collection; steel sparks and wood dust in one collector are a fire risk.
The length has to match the machine. Check the size plate or manual, or measure the circumference of a belt that fits, and order that exact length; the tension drum only travels a few inches. Nearby sizes we stock include 6" x 195" and 6" x 258", and any other 6" length can be converted to order.
Before mounting, check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow and run it that way. Release tension, slide the belt on, tension, rotate by hand and set tracking so the belt is centred, then power up and fine-tune.
How to get the most out of it
- Keep separate belts for separate materials. A belt that has done aluminum or solid surface carries grease, resin and metal particles that will scratch or contaminate a hardwood panel. Label the spare in each pack by material.
- Run silicon carbide wet on solid surface and stone where the machine allows. Water keeps the sheet from heating and whitening, floats away swarf and stops the belt loading. On a dry machine, use light pressure and strong extraction.
- Give zirconia pressure on steel, and keep the part moving. Zirconia only sharpens under load. Lean in, but never dwell; dwelling blues the part and glazes the belt.
- Go light on wood. Aluminum oxide cuts with pad or table pressure alone. Bearing down burns maple and cherry and shortens belt life.
- Grease the belt for aluminum. A belt grease stick touched to the running belt stops aluminum packing into the grain and lets one belt do far more work.
- Clean aluminum oxide belts with a belt eraser. Pitch and dust load the grain long before it wears. A crepe-rubber belt eraser restores the cut.
- Store hanging and at shop temperature. A folded cloth belt takes a set that thumps under the pad or on the platen. Hang spares over a large peg away from sunlight and humidity.

Frequently asked questions
Which 6" x 214" belt is right for solid surface countertops?
Silicon carbide. It is the grain that cuts acrylic and polyester solid surface cleanly without melting or loading, and it leaves the uniform scratch a matte or semi-gloss finish depends on. Level seams at 60 to 80, refine through 120 and 180, stop at 220 for matte or continue to 320 and 400 for semi-gloss, running wet where the machine allows.
Should I use silicon carbide or zirconia on aluminum?
For most aluminum work on a 6" x 214" belt, silicon carbide with a belt grease stick gives the cleanest cut and finish. Zirconia is the better choice for heavy removal on thick plate or castings where you can apply firm pressure. Either way, finish with aluminum oxide 120 to 220 for an even satin surface.
Is a 6" x 214" belt an edge sander belt or a stroke sander belt?
Both. The length appears on mid-size horizontal stroke sanders and on long-bed oscillating edge sanders and combination machines. The belt is the same; the difference is whether the work rides against the platen on a table or a pad presses the belt down onto the work. Check your size plate to confirm the length.
Can I use one belt for wood and metal?
You can physically, but you should not if the wood will be stained or clear-coated. Grease, resin and fine metal particles from aluminum or steel transfer to the wood and cause blotching and grey marks. Keep a belt for each material and mark the spare; the two-pack makes that easy.
Can these belts be run wet?
Yes. The poly-cotton cloth backing tolerates water, and wet running is the recommended way to use silicon carbide on solid surface, quartz and stone. Only do it on a machine built for coolant; woodworking stroke and edge sanders are not, and water on a wood machine ruins the belt, the table and the platen graphite.
Why does zirconia stop at 120 grit in this size?
Zirconia works by fracturing under pressure to expose new edges, which is useful at coarse grits for removal but pointless at finishing grits where you use light pressure. Above 120 the grain just glazes. Aluminum oxide and silicon carbide are offered through 400 for the finishing stages.
How many belts per pack, and can you make a different length?
Each pack contains two 6" x 214" belts of one grain and grit. Orders over $200 ship free.
