2" x 42" Sanding Belts, 12 PACK

The 2" x 42" belt is the size on the Jet J-41002 and Palmgren 9681061 bench belt/disc sanders and on the 2 x 42 combination sanders sold through home centers and Harbor Freight, which makes it one of the most common hobby and small-shop belts in the country. We convert these in Anaheim, California in three grains: aluminum oxide for wood and general use, zirconia for steel and heavy removal, and ceramic for stainless, hardened steel and knife bevels.

Twelve belts to a pack in grits from 36 to 400 covers edge sanding, bevel grinding and flat surface grinding, and it is why knife makers and sharpeners who work on a 2 x 42 keep several packs on the wall. Pick the grain for the material and the grit for the stage.

Which 2" x 42" belt should you choose?

The grain matters more than the grit on a 2 x 42, because a small bench machine cannot generate the pressure that makes the tougher grains work on the wrong material.

• Aluminum oxide (brown): the belt to order if you are sanding or finishing wood, and a sound low-cost choice for aluminum, brass, mild steel and stainless at light pressure. It cuts cleanly under the light load of a bench sander and is offered across the whole 36–400 range, so it is also the grain for the fine grits on any material.
• Zirconia (green): heavy stock removal and long life on aluminum, mild steel and stainless in 36 through 120 grit. It self-sharpens under pressure, so lean into it. It works on heavy wood removal too, but it is less common there because it can tear and burn where aluminum oxide would sand cleanly.
• Ceramic (red or orange): hard metals, meaning stainless steel, tool steel and hardened blades. Ceramic costs more than zirconia and outlasts it on steel when run with firm pressure. It is the grain for profiling and bevel grinding knife blanks in 36–120 grit. Run it light and it glazes and heats the work, so it is not a wood belt.

A practical set for a knife hobbyist on a 2 x 42: ceramic 36 and 60 for profiling and bevels, zirconia or ceramic 120 for refining, aluminum oxide 220 through 400 for finishing the flats and the edge.

Never skip more than one grit. On a blade, every scratch you skip past at 60 grit is still there under a 400 grit finish.

What machines take a 2" x 42" belt?

Fitment notes: measure an old belt if you are unsure; the belt must match within about 1/4" in length, and a 2 x 42 will not fit a 2 x 36 or 2 x 48 machine. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting; if there is none the joint runs in either direction. Set the tracking with the belt running unloaded so it rides centred on the platen, and re-check after the first minute of use.

How to get the most out of it

1. Use the platen for flats and bevels and the slack section above the platen for convex edges and curves. Sand end grain and small parts on the disc side where possible so the belt does not load.
2. Match pressure to grain. Aluminum oxide wants a light hand; zirconia and ceramic want firm, steady pressure to keep fracturing. Running ceramic lightly is the most common mistake on a 2 x 42.
3. Keep steel cool. Dip the blade in water every pass or two, use fresh belts for thin edges, and never let the colour change. A hobby sander has no variable speed, so heat control is all in your hands.
4. Move the work across the belt width so the belt wears evenly rather than in a stripe.
5. Clean loaded belts with a crepe belt eraser. Pitch, aluminum and handle material pack the grain fast at 120 grit and finer. A cleaned aluminum oxide belt cuts nearly like new.
6. Keep wood and metal dust apart. If you grind steel and sand wood on the same machine, empty the collector between jobs; hot steel sparks and wood dust in one bag are a fire risk.
7. Store belts hanging or loosely rolled, away from humidity and sunlight, and let cold belts warm to room temperature before running them.

• Heavy production grinding; a 2 x 42 bench sander lacks the power and rigidity, and a 2 x 72 grinder is the right tool
• Machines built for 2 x 36 or 2 x 48 belts
