A 10-inch belt that is 90 inches long is an odd size for a reason: it fits compact wide belt sanders and long-bed edge and stroke-style machines that need a long loop to run cool on a narrow head. Small production shops making cutting boards, guitar bodies, drawer parts and short panels are the usual buyers. These 10" x 90" belts on X-weight poly-cotton cloth are converted for exactly that class of machine, in closed-coat aluminum oxide or zirconia.
Four belts to a pack, one grain and one grit per pack, in every grit from 36 to 400. The heavy X-weight backing and anti-static treatment are the same we use on our largest industrial belts, so an older or finicky machine tracks them without drama. Converted in Anaheim, California.

Aluminum oxide or zirconia for a 10-inch machine?
Both grains are offered in the full 36 to 400 range. Pick by how hard your machine can push and what you sand.
- Cloth Closed Coat A/O: the default for a compact machine. Aluminum oxide cuts well at the moderate pressure a 10-inch head delivers and keeps cutting, just more slowly, as it wears. Fully covered closed-coat cloth means more grain and longer life than open coat on hardwood, plywood, MDF, plastics and composites, and it is the right grain for aluminum and brass. It is the only grain we suggest above 120 grit.
- Zirconia: for the coarse end, 36 to 80 grit, on hardwood glue-ups, end-grain cutting boards, and mild steel. The grain fractures under load to expose fresh edges, so it keeps its bite far longer than aluminum oxide when the machine is set to remove real stock. Run it light and it dulls like any other belt, so save it for the heavy pass and switch to aluminum oxide for surfacing.
Open coat is not offered in 10" x 90". Closed coat is the better choice on everything but very soft, pitchy softwood, and it is always the choice for metal. Strong extraction does more to prevent loading than an open coat would.

Step no more than one grade at a time. A four-pack of 80 and a four-pack of 150 covers most cutting-board and small-panel work; add 36 or 40 zirconia if the glue-ups come off the clamps rough.
What machines take a 10" x 90" belt?
- Compact 10-inch wide belt sanders used in small production shops and schools for boards, drawer parts and short panels.
- Long-bed edge and stroke-style sanders whose size plate calls for a 10-inch wide, 90-inch long belt.
- Older Timesaver-type and other automatic finish sanders built around this belt size, including machines whose tracking is no longer perfect; the X-weight backing tolerates a little hunting.
We do not have a verified list of current models for this size, so match both dimensions to your machine plate or manual. Length tolerance on most machines is about a quarter inch. Check the inside of the belt for a direction arrow before mounting and run it that way; if there is no arrow the joint runs in either direction. If your machine calls for a different length, we convert custom 10-inch belts in about 3 days.
How to get the most out of it
- Track it empty first. Let the belt run without stock until it settles in the centre of the drum or platen. On an older machine, re-check tracking after the first few minutes as the belt warms.
- Take light passes. A 10-inch machine has less motor behind it than an industrial line; 1/64" per pass at 36–60 grit and a skim at 120 and finer keeps the belt cool and the motor happy.
- Keep the work moving. Dwell burns cherry, maple and end grain. On a stroke or edge sander keep the pad moving along the belt with light pressure.
- Use the whole width. Feed narrow pieces across different parts of the belt so it wears evenly instead of grooving in the middle.
- Extract dust and clean the belt. Loading is the main reason a belt stops cutting. A crepe rubber belt eraser held lightly against the running belt pulls packed dust out of the grain.
- Store belts hanging in a dry spot away from sunlight, and let a cold belt come up to shop temperature before mounting.

Frequently asked questions
Which grit should I buy first for end-grain cutting boards?
Start with 60 grit if the boards come off the clamps close to flat, or 36 to 40 grit zirconia if they are stepped or have heavy glue squeeze-out. Follow with 100 or 120 aluminum oxide and finish at 150 to 180 before oil. A four-pack each of 60, 120 and 180 covers most board work.
Will a 10" x 90" belt fit a machine that lists 10" x 89" or 10" x 91"?
Usually not. Most belt sanders accept about a quarter inch of length variation, and an inch is more than the tensioner can take up. Check your machine plate or manual for the exact length. If it is not 90 inches, we convert custom 10-inch belts to the length you need in about 3 days.
Is zirconia worth it on a small 10-inch machine?
Only at the coarse end. Zirconia needs load to self-sharpen, and a compact machine set for a real depth of cut at 36 to 80 grit provides that on hardwood and steel. For surfacing and finishing at 100 grit and above, closed-coat aluminum oxide cuts cleaner and costs less on a 10-inch head.
What does X-weight backing mean and why does it matter on an older machine?
X-weight is a heavy, stiff poly-cotton cloth. It resists stretching under tension and tolerates the slight hunting that worn tracking rollers cause on older Timesaver-type machines, where a lighter cloth would cup, fold or split at the joint. It is the same backing we use on our largest industrial wide belts.
Can I run these belts on aluminum?
Yes. Use closed-coat aluminum oxide, start no coarser than 60 grit on extrusions or sheet, and keep the part moving so the aluminum does not smear and load the belt. A grease stick rubbed on the running belt reduces loading. Use a metal-rated dust collector and never mix aluminum dust with wood dust.
How many belts come in a pack and can I mix grits?
